As CDA vice president, Kireta is responsible for promoting use of copper and copper alloy systems and related products in building construction and sustainable energy applications.

ASTM member since 2001, Gonzales serves on Committees D22 on Air Quality, F15 on Consumer Products, and F24 on Amusement Rides and Devices. In addition to ASTM, Gonzales is member of board of directors of WhiteWater West Industries and Amusement Industry Manufacturers and Suppliers.

January 10, 2014 European Powder Metallurgy Association (EPMA) will hold 2-day Hardmetals Short Course in Vienna, Austria from April 9–11, 2014. Providing learning opportunities for engineers and scientists, course will start with Overview of Hard Materials (HSS to Diamond) and History of Hardmetals and offer multiple subsequent sessions on other specific topics. Laboratory Course, to be held on April 9, will introduce fundamentals of hardmetal manufacturing with experience of powders and equipment.
EPA funds projects to reduce pesticide risk.

January 10, 2014 EPA announced agricultural grants for Integrated Pest Management practices to reduce use of potentially harmful pesticides. Grants will go to Louisiana State University to minimize impacts to bees from insecticides used in mosquito control; University of Vermont to reduce pesticide use and improve pest control while increasing crop yields on 75 acres of hops in Northeast; and Pennsylvania State University to protect bees and crops by reducing reliance on neonicotinoid pesticide seed treatments.
2014 International CES sees record breaking numbers.

January 9, 2014 With 3,200+ exhibitors spread across show floor, 2014 International CES® opened as record-breaking show. There was over two million net square feet of exhibit space, which exceeded previous year's record-setting 1.92 million net square feet. On Sunday night, exhibitors provided a sneak preview of their show floor product launches via 99 tabletop displays, and Monday saw 25 exhibitors revealing new products. This CEA®-owned and -produced event runs through January 10.

A member of ASTM International and Committee F17 on Plastic Piping Systems since 1986, Sandstrum currently serves as F17’s Division 2 chairman and as chairman of Subcommittee F17.26 on Olefin Based Pipe. He received ASTM Award of Merit and accompanying title of fellow from F17 in 2009 for his service and leadership.

January 9, 2014 Consumer Electronics Association, owner and producer of the International CES®, is donating funds to University of Nevada, Las Vegas’s DesertSol solar house, and to the Springs Preserve toward the DesertSol project. This donation is to congratulate the UNLV DesertSol team on their success and to help further the project. DesertSol will be transported to the Springs Preserve where it will act as a living classroom for the next year, reporting data back to UNLV students and faculty.

January 9, 2014 Dr. Ben Kroposki, director of Energy Systems Integration at NREL, has been named an IEEE Fellow, recognized for his leadership in renewable and distributed energy systems integration in the electric power sector. Kroposki conducted original research that led to several IEEE standards in photovoltaic performance and reliability. He also led several efforts with IEEE interconnection standards and chaired IEEE 1547.4, which was the first international standard on microgrids.

January 8, 2014 ASTM Committee F40 on Declarable Substances in Materials will hold its next business meetings in People’s Republic of China from March 10–13, 2014. ASTM Standard measures particle size of metal powders.

January 8, 2014 Recent changes in technology are covered in ASTM B330, Test Methods for Estimating Average Particle Size of Metal Powders and Related Compounds Using Air Permeability. Metal powders tested by ASTM B330 are used in large and small precision parts in the automotive industry, as well as in various types of machinery and lighting products. New instrument referred to in standard is more precise, using sensitive pressure transducers instead of eyeball-estimated water column height to measure pressure.
CEA announces iBeacon scavenger hunt at International CES.

First three verified players who collect all available badges will be rewarded with special prize from CES. iBeacons are short range, Bluetooth transmitters that can notify mobile devices when they come within 100 ft of beacon.

Ebelhar, who joined ASTM International in 1980, is chairman of Committee D18 on Soil and Rock, as well as ASTM fellow and 2003 Award of Merit recipient. In addition to his ASTM work, Ebelhar is a fellow and member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and a Diplomate, Geotechnical Engineering, in the Academy of Geo-Professionals.

NREL Finds Cellulose Digestion Mechanism by fast-eating enzyme.

January 7, 2014 NREL researchers discovered enzyme from microorganism can digest cellulose at almost twice rate of currently available component cellulase enzyme. Paper reporting this finding, "Revealing Nature's Cellulase Diversity: The Digestion Mechanism of Caldicellulosiruptor bescii CelA," appears in Science. Enzyme could help drive down price of making lignocellulosic fuels, from ethanol to other biofuels, that can be dropped into existing infrastructure.
EPA proposes updates to standards for woodstoves and heaters.

January 7, 2014 EPA is proposing standards for amount of air pollution that can be emitted by new woodstoves and heaters, beginning in 2015. Proposal would make next generation of stoves and heaters an estimated 80% cleaner than those manufactured today, leading to important air quality and public health improvements in communities across the country. Proposal would affect wood heaters manufactured beginning in 2015 and will not affect units already in use or currently for sale today.
