EPA announces global methane initiative to cut greenhouse gases.

October 5, 2010 U.S. EPA and Mexico's Ministry of Environment along with 36 other countries, European Commission, Asian Development Bank, and Inter-American Development Bank launched Global Methane Initiative that urges stronger international action to address near-term climate change. United States is pledging $50 million over next 5 years to Initiative and is seeking similar pledges from other developed countries to support implementing methane emissions reduction projects and technologies.
Course for Emergency Responders covers transportation accidents.

October 5, 2010 Offered as 3-day course, Transportation Disaster Response - A Course for Emergency Responders will be held at NTSB Training Center in Ashburn, VA on November 16-18, 2010. Course is being facilitated with full participation of NJ State Police and will feature NTSB specialists as well as other speakers discussing operational and organizational challenges encountered in responding to large-scale, high-profile transportation accidents.

AIA Makes Statement on NASA Authorization Act of 2010.

October 4, 2010 AIA President and CEO Marion C. Blakey said passage of NASA Authorization Act of 2010 "is crucial to maintaining a robust U.S. human spaceflight program." Citing job losses in private sector due to uncertainty felt over NASA's future and mixed signals on direction of its programs, Blakey insisted "Enacting NASA's authorization begins the process of putting our spaceflight endeavors on a stable course." She strongly recommends President Obama sign NASA Authorization Act of 2010 into law.

Treaties will streamline licensing system for defense exports to UK and Australia. Aerospace industry strongly supports efforts to adjust outdated restrictions on American companies as they work to equip allies with technology that allows militaries to defend mutual interests.
Solar System tops off efficient NREL building.

October 4, 2010 Solar panels are being installed on roof of Research Support Facility to help building generate as much electricity as it uses. While RSF adds 222,000 square feet of office space to NREL campus, building's energy use only increases NREL's overall consumption by 6%. The 1.6 MW photovoltaic system comprises more than 1,800 panels soaking in 240 W of sun each. Additional PV will be installed on RSF expansion and on nearby garage and parking lot to help zero out energy equation.

October 4, 2010 The Manufacturing Institute has been awarded $800,000 grant from Lumina Foundation for Education to remodel manufacturing education in 12 states and position individuals for high-quality jobs in Advanced Manufacturing. It will deploy NAM-Endorsed Manufacturing Skills Certification System, creating applied science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) educational pathways aligned to manufacturing career pathways, which span from high school to 4-year college programs of study.
NIST awards $50 million in construction grants.

October 4, 2010 NIST awarded total of $50 million in grants to 5 institutions to support construction of scientific research facilities that will explore everything from nanometer-scale electronics and green buildings to ocean microbe ecosystems. Projects receiving funding under NIST Construction Grant Program will contribute to almost $133 million in new laboratory construction projects, according to grantees. Grants will go to research institutions in California, Maine, Michigan, Nevada, and New York.

DOE selects EPRI collaborative to lead cyber security project.

October 1, 2010 EPRI announced that U.S. Department of Energy has selected its cyber security collaborative to assess and develop technologies, best practices, metrics, and standards to protect U.S. electric sector against cyber attacks. Collaborative will assess requirements and results developed by NIST, NERC, and other organizations; review power system and cyber security standards in meeting security requirements; and test grid security technologies protocols using laboratories and pilot projects.

IPC releases PCB industry results for August 2010.

September 30, 2010 According to IPC's North American PCB Statistical Program, rigid PCB shipments were up 24.3% while bookings increased 22.1% from August 2009. Year to date, rigid PCB shipments were up 20.4% and bookings have grown 33.2%. Book-to-bill ratio for rigid PCB industry remained positive, but fell off slightly to 1.08. Flexible circuit shipments in August 2010 were up 35.7%, and bookings were up 61.8% compared to August 2009. Flexible circuit book-to-bill ratio also remained positive, but fell to 1.01.
