October 1, 2010 AEM and Mike Rowe, creator and host of Discovery Channel's "Dirty Jobs," launched "I Make America" campaign, which is aimed at promoting US manufacturing jobs. Insisting to Congress that new manufacturing policies are needed to create jobs immediately, campaign intimates that policies should generate economic activity by rebuilding and modernizing America's infrastructure as well as helping farmers and manufacturers export their products to new markets worldwide.
DOE selects EPRI collaborative to lead cyber security project.

October 1, 2010 EPRI announced that U.S. Department of Energy has selected its cyber security collaborative to assess and develop technologies, best practices, metrics, and standards to protect U.S. electric sector against cyber attacks. Collaborative will assess requirements and results developed by NIST, NERC, and other organizations; review power system and cyber security standards in meeting security requirements; and test grid security technologies protocols using laboratories and pilot projects.
International CES named North America's Greenest Show.

IPC releases PCB industry results for August 2010.

September 30, 2010 According to IPC's North American PCB Statistical Program, rigid PCB shipments were up 24.3% while bookings increased 22.1% from August 2009. Year to date, rigid PCB shipments were up 20.4% and bookings have grown 33.2%. Book-to-bill ratio for rigid PCB industry remained positive, but fell off slightly to 1.08. Flexible circuit shipments in August 2010 were up 35.7%, and bookings were up 61.8% compared to August 2009. Flexible circuit book-to-bill ratio also remained positive, but fell to 1.01.
Panel considers impact of higher CAFE standards.

September 30, 2010 ASTM F2837 provides gasket manufacturers with test for measuring creep and compression that can be used for R/D and material comparisons, and as QA tool. Standard covers 3 steps in testing process: creep of material under room temperature is measured while increasing load; while under constant load, temperature is increased at given rate over given time period, with thickness over this period being measured; and compression set of material is measured at end of test at room temperature.
ASTM Standards focus on determination of mercury in crude oils.

"Tipping Point: Maintaining the Health of the National Security Space Industrial Base" lays out challenges faced by national security space industrial base, including overly restrictive export control policies; shrinking, aging workforce; and budget instability. AIA makes several policy recommendations to address these challenges.
Airport Rehabilitation Projects receive over $2.5 million.

September 30, 2010 FAA announced 3 additional airport projects have been selected for funding, paid for with more than $2.5 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act dollars. According to FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt, "These projects will improve airport operations and help our airspace system to run more efficiently." Aforementioned projects apply to Lawrence, MA Municipal Airport; Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport; and Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport.
NTSB Official recognizes PHMSA progress and urges improvements.

September 30, 2010 NTSB's Christopher Hart credited Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) with implementing regulations for integrity management programs for gas and hazardous liquid pipelines and natural gas distribution pipeline systems. Hart cited 3 pipeline accidents in which PHMSA and operator oversight of risk-based assessment programs was lacking. He concluded by summarizing recent pipeline accident investigations in Cleburne, TX.; Marshall, MI; Romeoville, IL; and San Bruno, CA.

Manufacturers Sales Drop in US and Canadian markets.

September 30, 2010 According to July 2010 sales data released by PTDA in its Market Outlook Report, sales of power transmission/motion control (PT/MC) products by US manufacturers dropped in first month of third quarter by 1.3% compared to previous month, and Canadian manufacturers' sales dropped by 12.3%. Sales year-to-date, however, are still ahead of same period in 2009, with US sales increasing 7.6% and Canadian sales up 10.3%. US and Canadian market confidence ratings were 5.0 and 4.9, respectively.
