Successful applicant would support capacity building projects in urban communities that will lead to environmental, public health, and economic benefits. Initiative is designed to help communities access, restore, and benefit from their waters and surrounding land.

May 3, 2010 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is launching set of web tools, data, and interactive maps to inform public about serious Clean Water Act violations in their communities. Web page provides interactive information from EPA's 2008 Annual Noncompliance Report, which pertains to about 40,000 permitted Clean Water Act dischargers across the country. Report lists state-by-state summary data of violations and enforcement responses taken by states for smaller facilities.

May 3, 2010 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is issuing proposals that would cut U.S. mercury emissions by more than half and would significantly cut other pollutants from boilers, process heaters, and solid waste incinerators. These pollutants include several air toxics which are known or suspected to cause cancer or other serious health problems and environmental damage. When fully implemented, proposals would yield combined health benefits estimated at $18-$44 billion annually.

May 3, 2010 During IPC APEX EXPO, IPC announced 2010 Best Industry Posters. Tied for first place honors were Christopher Hunt, Ph.D., National Physical Laboratory, and David Lee, Ph.D., Johns Hopkins University. In addition, EXPO held academic poster competition with 10 posters highlighting research being conducted at college level. Attendees voted on top 3 posters, with first-place honors going to Pylin Sarobol, Aaron Pedigo, P. Su, J.E. Blendell, and C.A. Handwerker, Sc.D., from Purdue University.

May 3, 2010 Verified attendance figures from IPC APEX EXPO(TM) 2010 indicated 10% increase over last year, with 3,702 attendees. In total, 6,683 attendees and exhibitors participated. May 3, 2010 Department of Energy announced closing of $528.7 million loan with Fisker Automotive for development and production of 2 lines of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. Loan will support the Karma, a full-size, 4-door sports sedan, and a line of family oriented models being developed under Project NINA program. Fisker expects to manufacture hybrid lines at recently shuttered GM factory in Wilmington, DE, and anticipates that it will employ 2,000 American assembly workers.

April 30, 2010 Released by EPA, ToxRefDB database allows scientists and interested public to search and download thousands of toxicity testing results on hundreds of chemicals. ToxRefDB captures 30 years and $2 billion of testing results. Those interested in chemical toxicity can query specific chemical and find all available public hazard, exposure, and risk-assessment data, as well as previously unpublished studies related to cancer, reproductive, and developmental toxicity.

April 30, 2010 Scientists at NIST have developed first dimmer switch for a superconducting circuit linking quantum bit and quantum bus technologies. As described in forthcoming paper in Physical Review Letters, switch can reliably tune interaction strength or rate between qubit and quantum bus circuits from 100 MHz to nearly 0. This advance could enable researchers to flexibly control interactions between circuit elements in an intricate network as would be needed in a practical size quantum computer.

April 30, 2010 U.S. DoE signed Memorandum of Understanding with Masdar, Abu Dhabi's renewable energy initiative, to promote collaboration on clean and sustainable energy technologies. Agreement was signed by U.S. Deputy Secretary of Energy Daniel Poneman and Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, CEO of Masdar. Opening door for scientific/technical exchanges and joint research/development of clean energy technologies, it aims for cooperation in carbon capture/sequestration, water and biofuels, and building technology.

April 29, 2010 BIO thanked Representatives Allyson Schwartz (D-PA), Mark Schauer (D-MI), and Brian Bilbray (R-CA) for introducing the Grow a Renewable Energy Economy Now - Jumpstart Other Biofuels (GREEN JOBS) Act of 2010, H.R. 5142.
