Lyman Award honors Douglas Barrie for aviation journalism.

December 15, 2010 Douglas Barrie has been selected to receive 2010 Lauren D. Lyman Award. Building on over 2 decades of experience at publications covering aerospace industry, Barrie joined International Institute for Strategic Studies in London this year as senior fellow. During his career as a journalist, Barrie has become a recognized authority on Chinese and Russian airpower and guided weapons. Barrie will receive the award during AIA's 46th annual Year-End Review and Forecast luncheon December 15.
ASTM Skin Effects Standard aids consumer product evaluation.

December 14, 2010 Offered as methods for evaluation of potential irritant effects to skin as well as safety assessment of consumer products, standard ASTM F2808 can be used to test inherent chemical irritation potential of material as well as effects of mechanical irritation to skin. Standard was developed by Subcommittee F04.16 on Biocompatibility Test Methods. Standard allows 2 products to be simultaneously tested on same participant and tests are capable of providing pertinent results on various material types.

December 14, 2010 NASA researchers will present findings on Earth and space science topics at 2010 fall meeting of American Geophysical Union, which takes place December 13-17 in San Francisco, CA. Specifically, media briefings during meeting will feature topics such as results concerning health impacts of urban heat islands, search for ice volcanoes on one of Saturn's moons, observations of solar eruptions, and earthquake risk in southern CA.

James McNerney, Jr. of The Boeing Company to speed progress of export control modernization. They included launch of process to revise U.S. Munitions List and Commerce Control List, along with results of first attempt at revising export controls on military vehicles, and proposals to eliminate commerce licensing requirements for low sensitivity, dual-use exports to close partners and allies.

Utah DOT installed 17 HomeView Technologies® road condition monitoring cameras at remote locations, while Colorado DOT has deployed 222 snowplows equipped with Maintenance Decision Support System. Tennessee DOT will use non-corrosive, environmentally friendly substance called "Magic Salt" to help melt ice and snow.

Proposals are part of NASA's Small Business Innovation Research Program and Small Business Technology Transfer program. Research areas among selected proposals include methodologies for predicting effects of aeroelasticity; advanced photovoltaic systems; and measurements of atmospheric parameters and surface topography of planets.

Users receive samples for each test cycle, data report forms, and test instructions. Lab then performs tests within their facility using specified ASTM methods cited in program, submits test data to ASTM, and receives final summary reports.
