January 24, 2011 Centered around Zero Energy Design: A Safe Bet theme, ASHRAE's 2011 Winter Conference will take place January 29 through February 2 and host 3,500 members in Las Vegas, NV. Exchange of technical information will allow HVAC/R engineers to design and operate buildings, systems, and equipment that are energy efficient and ensure safe, productive, and healthy indoor environments. Simultaneously, AHR Expo will feature 1,800 exhibitors as well as 45,000 attendees and exhibitor staff.

January 24, 2011 Proposed standard ASTM WK31179, Practice for Selection and Preparation of Dimension Stone Test Specimens, will communicate to quarriers and sawyers of stone products the importance of preparing specimens as mandated by test procedure. Additionally, discussion and graphics included in standard will reduce confusion regarding anisotropic and surface machining aspects of specimen. Primary users will be those involved in import/export activities.
FAA mandates CRM training for on-demand charters.

January 24, 2011 The FAA has finalized a rule that requires non-scheduled charter airlines and air taxis to train pilots and flight attendants in Crew Resource Management, a concept that helps reduce human error in commercial aviation by teaching aviation workers to act as a team. The training must address the captain's authority; intra-crew communications; teamwork; managing workload, time, fatigue, and stress; and decision-making skills.

Some tips include: optimize supply air temperature, install monitoring equipment, improve lighting efficiency, and optimize data storage.

January 20, 2011 ASTM WK30231, Practice for Damage Resistance Testing of Sandwich Constructions, is being developed by ASTM International Committee D30 on Composite Materials. Standard will provide instructions for modifying test methods in ASTM D6264/D6264M and ASTM D7136/D7136M to determine damage resistance properties of sandwich constructions. Under jurisdiction of Subcommittee D30.09 on Sandwich Construction, it also accounts for differences in damage modes and inspection methods.

January 20, 2011 U.S. EPA recognized 6 landfill methane capture projects and partners for their innovation in generating renewable energy and protecting climate and people's health by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This year's winning projects will avoid emissions of 165,600 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per year. This reduction is equivalent to annual GHG emissions from more than 31,600 passenger vehicles or the carbon dioxide emissions from 385,200 barrels of oil consumed.

Several electric vehicles will also be available to media for inspection, charging, and driving demonstrations. Station will produce data to assist with integrating wind and solar power onto smart grid, assess impact on reliability of distributed resource generation, and analyze electric vehicle supply equipment.
