EPA recognizes top Green power purchasers.

November 4, 2010 U.S. EPA is releasing list of top 50 organizations using most renewable electricity. The Green Power Partnership's top purchasers use more than 12 billion kWh of green power annually, which is generated from renewable resources such as solar, wind, geothermal, biogas, and low-impact hydropower. Intel Corporation tops list as largest single purchaser of green power, using more than 1.4 billion kWh annually, while Kohl's Department Stores and Whole Foods Market came in second and third.

RIA announces new initiatives.

November 4, 2010 RIA has announced several changes that will have positive impact on association and services it provides to members and industry. Trade association has retooled and reinvented its convention, which will be unveiled with 66th Annual Convention and Exhibition March 7-11, 2011. RIA has also begun work on industry's first major fire damage standard, and has appointed Tim Shaw of Association and Communications Management Group to serve as interim executive director following departure of Don Manger.
ISPE Training Courses to focus on USFDA compliance.

November 4, 2010 ISPE will offer 7 training courses, including Complying with Part 11 - Risk Management: Applying the GAMP® Good Practice Guide: Electronic Records and Signatures Principles, led by Sion Wyn. It focuses on complying with FDA's re-examination of 21 CRF Part 11. Other courses will focus on sustainability within HVAC, and regulatory philosophy in sterile drug manufacturing facilities. Courses will be held at 2010 ISPE Philadelphia Classroom Training event, from December 6-9, 2010.
NEMA's October EBCI indicates slight decline in business.

November 4, 2010 Data from NEMA's EBCI shows that index for current North American business conditions fell to 48 in October, which indicates more panelists than not report conditions have deteriorated. Better conditions were reported by 4 out of 25 panelists, while 5 out of 25 reported worse conditions, and majority reported conditions were unchanged. EBCI for North American conditions in 6 months climbed to 68, meaning more panelists than not expect business environment to improve.

November 4, 2010 Fieldbus Foundation has announced field indicator from Yokogawa and thermal mass flowmeter from FCI are first to incorporate field diagnostics technology based on FOUNDATION fieldbus Diagnostics Profile Specification FF-912. Diagnostic profile includes standard and open interface for reporting all device alarm conditions, and provides means of categorizing alerts by severity. Devices submitted for field diagnostics registration must pass Interoperability Test Kit (ITK) test cases.

As BIO president and CEO, Jim Greenwood said that he hopes Congress "will consider extending and expanding this program to support American innovation."

FAA awards $18 million grant to Seattle-Tacoma airport.

November 1, 2010 FAA announced award of its largest Voluntary Airport Low Emission grant for $18.3 million project at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport to improve air quality and to reduce use of conventional fuels at airport. With VALE grant, Sea-Tac will be able to install centralized preconditioned air plant that will allow aircraft arriving at gates to shut off auxiliary power units and connect to cleaner central heating and cooling system, greatly reducing aircraft emissions on the ground.

November 1, 2010 NIST is participating in worldwide effort to recommend major revisions to International System of Units (SI). Most significant change would be to kilogram, which is only one of SI's 7 base units still defined by material artifact, a 130-year-old platinum-iridium cylinder, with mass that changes slightly over time. The proposed revision, which defines kilogram in terms of Planck constant h, "puts the SI on a firm foundation," says Ambler Thompson of NIST.

November 1, 2010 Since 2009, EPRI has been conducting LED Energy Efficiency Demonstration in order to try and discover light bulb that meets outdoor lighting requirements of consumers while using less electricity. Assessments have been made for LED-based street and area lights at over 20 sites within US using EPRI-developed remote controlled roving light measurement vehicle named Scotty. This mobile robot can measure all types of lights, including LED.
