Joint Federal Agency Effort hopes to reduce radon exposure.

January 5, 2011 U.S. EPA and 8 other federal agencies announced efforts to create national risk reduction plan for radon exposure, the leading cause of non-smoking lung cancer, in hopes of saving lives and creating safer, healthier homes. At January's end, federal consortium will meet with key leaders in public health, environmental, and private sectors to shape national action plan with immediate and long-term steps for reducing radon exposure.

EPA requires testing of 19 widely used chemicals.

January 5, 2011 U.S. EPA is issuing final rule under Toxic Substances Control Act requiring manufacturers of 19 high production volume chemicals to test the health and environmental effects of the chemicals and submit data to agency. This rule is one of a series of actions that EPA is taking to ensure that the agency has the data it needs to adequately review priority chemicals. HPV chemicals are produced in or imported into U.S. in quantities of 1 million pounds or more per year.
ASTM Committee developing standard for dental dams.

January 5, 2011 ASTM WK28312, Test Method for Quantitation of Powder on Dental Dams, is currently being developed by Subcommittee D11.40 on Consumer Rubber Products, which is part of ASTM International Committee D11 on Rubber. Standard will allow dental dam manufacturers to be able to detect level of donning powders in their manufacturing process and eventually produce lower powder-containing dental dams.

S613 Series includes information on potentially hazardous environments, such as orchard and vineyard pesticide applications. Standards incorporate latest research and technology into guidelines for design, development, manufacture, management, maintenance, and use of environmental cabs.
ASABE approves standard for automatic deployable ROPS.

January 5, 2011 ASABE announces publication of ANSI/ASABE S599, Standardized Deployment Performance of an Automatically Deployable ROPS for Turf and Landscape Equipment. S599 specifies design and testing requirements for the installation of automatically deploying roll-over protective structures (ROPS) and establishes performance requirements of an automatically deployable protective structure for ride-on turf and landscape equipment. Standard applies to equipment as defined in ANSI/ASAE S323.2.

January 4, 2011 TIA announced that open enrollment period for TIA members to enroll in HM Care Advantage medical plans has begun and will last until March 31, 2011. HM Care Advantage offers indemnity plans with monthly individual premiums as low as $150 (when employer-paid). Plans are designed to help meet basic health care needs by providing fixed-payment amounts for unlimited physician office visits, insured prescription drugs, inpatient hospitalization, surgery, emergency care, and diagnostic testing.

It is being developed by Subcommittee E18.04 on Fundamentals of Sensory, one member of which stated that said standard will "bring attention to an important aspect of product testing" for sensory scientists. Clearly written document will help bring issue of product sampling forward to R/D and marketing.
ASTM Specification to cover zinc alloys for spin casting.

January 3, 2011 ASTM International Committee B02 on Nonferrous Metals and Alloys is working on proposed standard ASTM WK30745, Specification for Zinc Alloys for Spin Casting. Being developed by Subcommittee B02.04 on Zinc and Cadmium, use of this standard will allow production of castings that consistently meet ASTM B952. Interested parties are invited to join in development of ASTM WK30745, especially those interested in assistance in mechanical and physical testing of alloys.

December 31, 2010 Based on evidence of leakage when ballasts fail, U.S. EPA's guidance recommends schools take steps to reduce potential exposures to PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) from older fluorescent lighting fixtures by removing them. Document also offers advice on preventing exposure if leaking ballasts are discovered as well as how to properly handle and dispose of such fixtures. Heeding this advice will contribute to safety of students and teachers in older buildings.
