January 20, 2011 U.S. EPA recognized 6 landfill methane capture projects and partners for their innovation in generating renewable energy and protecting climate and people's health by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This year's winning projects will avoid emissions of 165,600 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per year. This reduction is equivalent to annual GHG emissions from more than 31,600 passenger vehicles or the carbon dioxide emissions from 385,200 barrels of oil consumed.

January 20, 2011 On January 25, EPRI and Tennessee Valley Authority will demonstrate prototype 6-bay integrated solar-assisted electric vehicle charging station at EPRI laboratory in Knoxville, TN. Several electric vehicles will also be available to media for inspection, charging, and driving demonstrations. Station will produce data to assist with integrating wind and solar power onto smart grid, assess impact on reliability of distributed resource generation, and analyze electric vehicle supply equipment.

January 19, 2011 Workshop on Chemical Test Methods for B05 Documents, sponsored by ASTM Committee B05 on Copper and Copper Alloys, will be held in Anaheim, CA on April 11. As many of Committee B05's chemical test methods have become obsolete, new ones need to be developed. Attendees will trace reasons for withdrawing current methods and look at what is currently being done in B05 documents. Possible options will be discussed for developing new procedures and test methods as well as necessary protocols.

Over 75% of respondents predict sales increase; 21% expect sales to remain level; and 2% believe sales will continue to decrease. Facing aggregate growth rate of 4.9% (lowest in country), 55% of distributors in South plan to upgrade current facilities or build new ones.

January 19, 2011 NAM Senior Vice President for Government Relations and Policy Aric Newhouse said manufacturers were appreciative of President Obama's executive order to review federal regulations harming economic growth. In addition to pointing out that manufacturers have been saying "for some time" that over-regulation harms job creation and stifles economic growth, Newhouse said manufacturers stand ready to help President reduce unnecessary burdens "so they can get back to creating jobs."
AAMA Official responds to House oversight committee request.

January 19, 2011 House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform asked AAMA for assistance in identifying existing and proposed regulations that have negatively affected job growth in fenestration industry. In response, implementation of EPA's LRRP regulations, which excluded opt-out provision contained within original RRP regulations, was discussed. AAMA's Rich Walker notes encouragement that Chairman Issa is willing to review rules which have been enforced without benefit of industry input.

Twenty-nine products from 16 companies were selected as finalists from among over 100 nominations submitted by 40 companies, with LexisNexis representing 6 products across 4 categories. Winners will be announced at CODiE Awards Dinner on January 25, to be held in conjunction with 2011 Information Industry Summit in New York City.

January 19, 2011 According to January 2011 Business Conditions Report, metalforming companies are optimistic about business conditions during next 3 months. Report shows that 47% of participants forecast improvement in economic activity, up from 40% in December, while 43% predict activity will remain unchanged, and only 10% report that activity will decline. Additionally, 52% of participants predict increase in incoming orders for next 3 months, and 26% report that shipping levels are above levels of 3 months ago.
EPA's Permit Suspension creates widespread uncertainty.

January 19, 2011 NAM Executive Vice President and incoming President Jay Timmons issued comment about EPA's action to halt a Section 404 permit issued under the Clean Water Act for disposal of mining waste from Mingo Logan's Spruce No. 1 surface mine in West Virginia. According to Timmons, EPA's action to suspend a properly issued, valid permit will create uncertainty for all Section 404 permit holders and will have negative impact on manufacturing and job creation.
ASTM Antimicrobial Agents Subcommittee approves 2 new standards.

January 18, 2011 Part of Committee E35 on Pesticides and Alternative Control Agents, ASTM Subcommittee E35.15 on Antimicrobial Agents has approved 2 standards that will be used by manufacturers of hand soaps and contract testing laboratories. They include ASTM E2783, Test Method for Assessment of Antimicrobial Activity for Water Miscible Compounds Using Time-Kill Procedure and ASTM E2784, Test Method for Evaluation of the Effectiveness of Handwash Formulations Using Paper Towel Method of Hand Contamination.

January 18, 2011 Proposed new standard, ASTM WK30847, Guide for Selection of Assessors for Sensory Training, will help users determine appropriate assessors, give general guidelines for ways to select and recruit respondents, and list benefit and drawbacks in selecting certain assessors. Proposed standard will be divided into three major areas: selection of assessors for consumer and affective testing, descriptive testing, and difference testing.
Energy Economy Boom negatively impacts North Dakota roads.

January 18, 2011 North Dakota is experiencing an economic boom due to US Geological Survey estimate from April 2008, which proclaimed presence of millions of barrels of recoverable crude oil. Two Minute State DOT Update featured North Dakota DoT Director Francis Ziegler, who commented that this is good news. He also noted that roads which "were in great shape" had 2 or 3 in. ruts in them 2 months later due to travel of oil crews. More investment will be needed, Ziegler said, for upkeep of roads and bridges.
