February 1, 2011 Fieldbus Foundation announced it welcomes enhancements to Electronic Device Description Language (EDDL), which gives users access to diagnostic, real-time, and asset management information in industrial field instruments. Updates to EDDL include support for modular devices, offline configuration, and Unicode character sets. It also supports display of device diagnostics and setup information on single page and enables display of illustrations based on chosen language.
LIA to hold Lasers for Manufacturing event.

February 1, 2011 LIA will hold inaugural Lasers for Manufacturing Event (LME) on September 27 and 28 in Chicago. Event will provide basic training on lasers and systems, courses on laser processes, including welding and laser additive manufacturing, videos on laser processing, and examples of parts made by lasers. It will also feature 10, 15, and 20 min presentations by exhibitors in theater directly on show floor. Exhibits will be complemented by expertise available on LIA laser insights webpage.
NAM Official responds to State-of-the-Union address.

February 1, 2011 In response to State of the Union address, NAM President and CEO Jay Timmons said President Obama's comments on increasing exports, opening new markets, and passing pending free trade agreements are important to achieving job creation, economic growth, and competitiveness. Timmons also said manufacturers have outlined ideas in NAM's Manufacturing Strategy for Jobs and a Competitive America, and added that NAM will encourage Administration and Congress to enact proposals in strategy.
NAM Official approves of OSHA withdrawal of MSD proposal.

February 1, 2011 NAM VP of Human Resources Policy Joe Trauger said manufacturers are pleased with OSHA's temporary withdrawal of its proposed additional reporting column for work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) on employer injury and illness logs. "With the unemployment rate still unacceptably high, we urge OSHA to continue to demonstrate that it is curbing the unnecessary regulations that are holding back job growth by permanently withdrawing this ill-conceived proposed rule," Trauger added.
ODVA to form special interest group for rail transport.

February 1, 2011 ODVA announced that it will form special interest group (SIG) to evolve ODVA technologies for rail transport, including on-board train controls, monitoring, signaling, and demand-response. Expected to encompass EtherNet/IP compliant products, resulting standards will guide development of automated, interoperable information and communication technologies in rail transport. SIG is expected to hold its initial meeting in Q1 2011, with ODVA members attending from Europe, Asia, and Americas.

EPA seeks public input on Superfund site criteria changes.

February 1, 2011 EPA announced it will accept public input on whether to include vapor intrusion threats as component for incorporating hazardous waste sites on National Priorities List of Superfund sites. Public feedback will be accepted on 7 topics related to potential revisions of Hazard Ranking System (HRS), which is used to evaluate sites for Superfund list, during 75-day period. Public listening sessions will also be held at Arlington, VA; San Francisco, CA; and Albuquerque, NM.

February 1, 2011 Open to the public, 5 listening sessions will be held to help EPA update Clean Air Act pollution standards to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) pollution from fossil fuel power plants and petroleum refineries. Each listening session is scheduled to last 2 hr and will feature round table discussion among stakeholder representatives who have been identified and selected for their expertise in Clean Air Act standard-setting process. Sessions are scheduled for February 4/15/17/23 and March 4.

January 28, 2011 States Ramping Up Action on Passenger Rail study indicates state DOTs, Federal Railroad Administration, and freight railroads are working to expand national passenger rail system. States have been told to proceed on almost $4.3 billion worth of projects, and passenger rail ridership is also growing. Almost 14 million people rode on state-supported rail lines outside of northeast corridor between Oct 2009 and Sept 2010, and another 10 million rode trains between Washington, DC, and Boston.
