Manufacturing Poll reports that business is better in 2010.

November 22, 2010 According to FMA poll of factory executives, supervisors, and engineers, manufacturing sector is on its way to economic recovery. More than 72% of manufacturers surveyed at FABTECH trade show reported business is either much better or somewhat better in 2010 when compared to 2009. Another 18% said business was neither better nor worse and only 10% said it was worse. Nearly half of respondents said their companies added permanent full-time staff in 2010 and another 30% hired temporary workers.
IPC Training and Certification Programs updated for standard revisions.

November 19, 2010 IPC has released training and certification programs for revision E of IPC-A-610, Acceptability of Electronics Assemblies, and J-STD-001, Requirements for Soldered Electrical and Electronic Assemblies. Each standard supports related training and certification course for trainers and for application specialists, leading to certified IPC trainer and certified IPC application specialist credentials respectively.
FAA proposes requiring pilot certificates to include photos.

November 19, 2010 Under FAA proposal, pilots would obtain new certificates on which their photograph would appear with proposed expiration date of 8 years. At the end of that time period, pilots would need to update their photo and obtain new certificate. If finalized, resulting regulation will fulfill provision of the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act, which requires FAA to issue plastic, tamper-resistant pilot certificates with photos.

Other executives named to board include Daniel Huber of ABB, Takuji Hosoya of Azbil, Peter Zornio of Emerson Process Management, and Ralph Carter of Rockwell Automation.

November 18, 2010 PTDA has named Penny Omnès, director, BCB Corporation Services, Ltd. the 21st recipient of its Warren Pike Award for lifetime achievement in the power transmission/motion control industry. Omnès began volunteering with PTDA in 1993, serving on the Marketing Committee, and then went on to chair the Industry Relations Committee in 1996. Omnès joined the Board of Directors the following year and became association's first and, to date, only female president in 2000.

November 18, 2010 Lighting Options for Your Home summarizes 2007 Energy Independence and Security Act, which mandates reductions in energy use and greenhouse gas emissions, and explains how changeover from incandescent lamps will help accomplish sustainability goals. Beginning in 2012 (one year later in California) and ending in 2014, traditional 100, 75, 60, and 40 W incandescents will be phased out. Lighting options - halogen, compact fluorescent, LED - are explained in detail.

November 18, 2010 Hydraulic Institute (HI) introduced ANSI/HI 3.6-2010, Rotary Pump Tests. Updated standard, which applies to industrial/commercial rotary positive displacement pumps, includes detailed procedures on setup and methods for conducting hydrostatic test and performance tests. Specifically, updates include complete reformatting of Standard to one-column layout, use of larger graphics and figures, detailed descriptions, and equation for pump output power.

NTSB adds motorcycle safety to Most Wanted List.

November 17, 2010 NTSB updated its Most Wanted List of Transportation Safety Improvements by adding motorcycle safety. Since head injury is the leading cause of death in motorcycle crashes, NTSB recommends that everyone on a motorcycle be required to wear a helmet that complies with DOT's Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 218. Currently, 27 states and 1 territory have partial laws that require minors and/or passengers to wear helmets, while Iowa, Illinois, and New Hampshire have no helmet laws.

EPA to expand chemicals testing for endocrine disruption.

November 17, 2010 The U.S. EPA has identified list of 134 chemicals that will be screened for their potential to disrupt endocrine system, which regulates growth, metabolism, and reproduction in animals and humans. List includes chemicals that have been identified as priorities under Safe Drinking Water Act, as well as those used in pesticides, solvents, personal care products, and pharmaceuticals, including benzene, perchlorate, urethane, ethylene glycol, and erythromycin.

November 17, 2010 Agenda for Nuclear Energy Standards Coordination Collaborative (NESCC) meeting, released by ANSI and NIST, includes updates on advanced manufacturing and small modular reactors by U.S. DOE representatives. Highlights also include status report on ACI's Nuclear Concrete Inspection and Training Program, while representatives from NIST and NRC are set to discuss task group reports on concrete, polymeric piping, and standards database initiatives. Meeting will take place Monday, November 22, 2010.

Proposed revisions are intended to clarify procedural requirements; propose definition for duplication within ANS process; incorporate added details that define good faith efforts; and offer sample PINS Deliberation Report.

November 16, 2010 STINA announced that it is establishing an industry-wide, structural steel tubing Product Certification Program designed to provide assurance that the HSS certified by STINA has been produced to, and tested to meet, ASTM standards. Intertek, a product testing and certification company, is helping to develop criteria and procedures for program and will administer evaluation and product testing required for producing companies to earn certification.
