North American Robotics Companies post best year since 2007.

February 11, 2011 Strong growth in 2010 was reported by North American-based robotics companies, which posted best year since 2007 according to statistics released by RIA. North American robot suppliers reported orders of 13,174 robots valued at $845.6 million from North American-based companies, increases of 39% in units and 49% in dollars. When orders from customers outside North America are included, totals are 15,860 robots valued at $993.2 million for gains of 52% in units and 58% in dollars.

February 10, 2011 JILA scientists eliminated collisions between atoms in atomic clock by packing atoms closer together. As described in Science Express, this discovery could enhance performance of experimental atomic clocks made of thousands or tens of thousands of neutral atoms trapped by intersecting laser beams. This idea, proposed by JILA theorist Ana Maria Rey and demonstrated in the lab by Ye's group, might make neutral atom-based clock accuracy compete with that of single ion based clocks.
ASABE to Adopt Standard on satellite-based positioning devices.

Adoption increases exposure of standard and its benefits in North American marketplace while further harmonizing national and international standardization.

February 10, 2011 NASA has partnered with Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), which will manage Sample Return Robot Challenge that will demonstrate how robot can locate and retrieve geologic samples from varied terrain without human control. Program seeks to encourage innovations in automatic navigation and robotic manipulator technologies. To take place in spring of 2012, competition will offer winning prize of $1.5 million, funded by NASA, while WPI will publish rules and register competitors.

February 9, 2011 NTSB recommendations to U.S. Coast Guard include M-10-4, which concerns inappropriate use of loudhailers by vessels for sound signaling and corrective actions. For new ferry vessels, M-10-5 requires installation of voyage data recorders that meet international performance standard. Similarly, M-10-6 requires voyage data recorder installation on ferry vessels built before enactment of voyage data recorder carriage requirements that will record specific video, audio, and parametric data.

Demanding right to returns on commuter investments, Slater cited 18.4 cent federal fuel and 24.4 diesel tax that went towards Highway Trust Fund for 2010-11 fiscal year. Contributions thereto, he continued, should be dedicated to transportation infrastructure maintenance/improvement, not to deficit reduction.
