Oakes, founder and CEO of Intellimar Inc., was elected chairman of ASTM International Committee E54 on Homeland Security Applications, which addresses issues related to standards and guidance materials for homeland security. February 2, 2011 According to Jan 28 GDP report by U.S. Commerce Department, nonresidential fixed investment increased 4.4% in fourth quarter of 2010 following 10% increase in the third quarter. For the year, nonresidential fixed investment was up 5.5%, following a 17.1% drop in 2009. Residential fixed investment increased 3.4% in the fourth quarter, marking the first increase since the third quarter of 2009. Personal consumption expenditures grew 4.4% in fourth quarter as expenditures in goods jumped 10.1%.

February 2, 2011 Announcement made at ASHRAE's 2011 Winter Conference proclaimed that more than 30% energy savings can be achieved using ANSI/ASHRAE/IES Standard 90.1-2010, Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings versus 2004 version. Published in November 2010, standard provides minimum requirements for energy-efficient design of buildings with exception of low-rise residential buildings.
PCB Industry Shows Gains in December 2010 according to report.

February 2, 2011 According to IPC President and CEO Denny McGuirk, IPC's December findings from North American PCB Statistical Program show "a good month for the North American PCB industry, with sales growth rates in the double digits." He noted that while orders are slowing for rigid PCBs, flex orders and sales are "up significantly." This monthly survey of North American PCB industry tracks bookings and shipments from US and Canadian facilities in order to provide indicators of regional demand.

ANSI Issues Reminder to ASDs for compliance form submissions.

February 2, 2011 ANSI-Accredited Standard Developers (ASDs) are reminded that 2011 ASD procedural compliance form must be completed and submitted to ANSI by March 31, 2011. After reviewing 2010 edition of ANSI Essential Requirements: Due process requirements for American National Standards, ASDs should complete ANSI Procedural Compliance Form, which was recently forwarded via email to primary contact for each ANSI ASD. ASDs may submit revised procedures for re-accreditation to ANSI PSA department.

AMT President Douglas K. Woods expressed optimism that this helps in establishing national manufacturing strategy. Specifically, Woods said he is "hopeful this is recognition from the administration that job creation and competitiveness depend on a national agenda that emphasizes the importance of manufacturing."

February 1, 2011 NAM VP of Human Resources Policy Joe Trauger said manufacturers are pleased with OSHA's temporary withdrawal of its proposed additional reporting column for work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) on employer injury and illness logs. "With the unemployment rate still unacceptably high, we urge OSHA to continue to demonstrate that it is curbing the unnecessary regulations that are holding back job growth by permanently withdrawing this ill-conceived proposed rule," Trauger added.

February 1, 2011 ODVA announced that it will form special interest group (SIG) to evolve ODVA technologies for rail transport, including on-board train controls, monitoring, signaling, and demand-response. Expected to encompass EtherNet/IP compliant products, resulting standards will guide development of automated, interoperable information and communication technologies in rail transport. SIG is expected to hold its initial meeting in Q1 2011, with ODVA members attending from Europe, Asia, and Americas.
