NTSB Chairman discusses future of transportation safety.

January 28, 2011 NTSB Chairman Deborah A. P. Hersman said accident investigations show need for new perspectives on safety culture, record keeping, and aging infrastructure. When she spoke to audience at Transportation Research Board conference, she discussed four investigations, highlighted several accidents, and encouraged attendees to learn from them to prevent future accidents. In conclusion, Hersman commended work of former FAA Administrator Jane Garvey and former House Committee Chairman James Oberstar.
Equipment Leasing and Finance Index shows growth in December.

January 28, 2011 Up 27% compared to same period in 2009 and 100% above November's volume, ELFA's Monthly Leasing and Finance Index (MLFI-25) for December shows new business volume at $9.0 billion. Year-end new business volume for 2010 is up 9.2% compared to 2009, and credit quality also improved. Receivables over 30 days decreased to 2.7% from 3.2% in November and 37% compared to 2009. Losses remained at 1.4% compared to prior month. Credit approvals increased to 75%, up 3% from prior month.
AASHTO Tells Senate states count on transportion investment.

January 28, 2011 At hearing before Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, AASHTO president Susan Martinovich testified to need for federal transportation funding. She detailed four main points, which included how transportation is vital to economy, its impact on sustaining export-led recovery, current transportation infrastructure deficit, and how transportation investment creates jobs. She concluded by stressing critical need for long-term surface transportation authorization bill this year.

January 27, 2011 Developed for Apple's iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad, ASHRAE Duct Fitting Database (DFDB) app lets users perform pressure loss calculations for 200+ HVAC duct fittings in both I-P and SI units. Dynamic illustrations are provided for each design, and inputs can be adjusted by touch. Users can create individual projects, each with unique input values and results, and each fitting has its own custom set of input parameters and results. Reports can be displayed and emailed.
JILA develops efficient source of terahertz radiation.

January 27, 2011 JILA researchers have developed laser-based source of terahertz radiation that is efficient and less prone to damage than similar systems. Terahertz radiation, which falls between radio and optical bands of electromagnetic spectrum, penetrates materials such as clothing and plastic but can be used to detect substances that have unique absorption characteristics at these wavelengths. Technology may be useful in applications such as detecting trace gases or imaging weapons in security screening.

Standard addresses issues such as physical and information security, employee data access, computer networks, and destruction of scrap material.
EPA, DOT, and CA align timeframe for clean car standards.

January 26, 2011 U.S. DOT, EPA, and state of California announced single timeframe of Sept 1, 2011 for proposing fuel economy and greenhouse gas standards for model year 2017-2025 cars and light-duty trucks. Collaboration could lead to extension of National Clean Car Program, providing automakers certainty as they work to build next generation of clean, fuel efficient cars. Improving fuel efficiency will save consumers money at the pump, reduce dependence on foreign oil, and cut emissions of harmful pollutants.

In addition, papers are sought for tracks on Operations and Maintenance, HVAC Systems, HVAC Fundamentals and Applications, Professional Skills, and Refrigeration. Conference paper abstracts or full-length technical papers are due by April 18, 2011.
National Program Office to foster secure online transactions.

January 26, 2011 U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke and White House Cybersecurity Coordinator Howard Schmidt announced plans to create a National Program Office to help foster an environment in which sensitive online transactions can be carried out with greater levels of trust. To be established within Department of Commerce, with support from NIST and NTIA, National Program Office would coordinate federal activities needed to implement the National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace.

January 26, 2011 Joseph Stroscio has been named a Fellow of American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). He was elected as AAAS fellow as part of Physics Section for his contributions to surface and condensed matter physics fields, notably for development and application of scanning tunneling microscopy. New Fellows will be presented with official certificate and rosette pin on February 19, 2011 at AAAS Fellows Forum, which is held during 2011 AAAS Annual Meeting in Washington, DC.

Tower will also feature Integrated Control and Monitoring System, which consolidates information, including navigational aid displays, into one screen.

January 26, 2011 Proposed standard ASTM WK30842, Test Method for Serial Passage Resistance Induction to Assess the Potential for Bacteria to Develop Resistance to an Antimicrobial Compound, is under jurisdiction of Subcommittee E35.15 on Antimicrobial Agents. If approved, it could be used by pharmaceutical manufacturers as well as antiseptic and sanitizer manufacturers during development of new topical formulations to provide reproducible way of evaluating potential for antimicrobial compounds.
