November 30, 2010 U.S. EPA is accepting nominations for 2011 Annual Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Awards. Agency is encouraging nominations for design of safer and more sustainable chemicals, processes, and products that will protect the public, particularly children and other sensitive populations, from exposure to harmful chemicals. Awards recognize innovative technologies that incorporate green chemistry into chemical design, manufacture, and use and help protect human health and environment.

Workshop focused on plumbing and mechanical codes, and their application in supporting expanding construction industries in U.S. and India. Participants examined consensus code development; environmentally conscious, internationally recognized codes and standards; and expanding public awareness through education.

November 29, 2010 U.S. EPA, Justice Department, and Attorney for the Southern District of New York announced that Tronox Incorporated agreed to resolve its environmental liabilities for $270 million and 88% of its interest in pending litigation. Bankruptcy settlement will reimburse EPA for past cleanup costs as well as fund future cleanups at contaminated sites. Cash and non-cash assets will be placed in environmental response trusts for cleanup of sites contaminated with hazardous substances or waste.

NIST develops quartz crystal microbalance for microscale analysis.

November 29, 2010 NIST has developed chemical analysis technique that uses shifting ultrasonic pitch of small quartz crystal to test purity of few micrograms of material. Based on thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), technique involves measuring changes in mass due to temperature increases, and measures reaction energy needed to decompose, oxidize, dehydrate, or otherwise chemically change sample with heat. Technique is suited for characterizing complex biofuel mixtures, nanoparticles, and thin films.

Both will cooperate through 6th AVL International Commercial Powertrain Conference (ICPC), organized by AVL and held in Graz, Austria. Under agreement, SAE will globally distribute technical papers chosen to be presented during ICPC event. Effort is part of SAE's Content Partnership Program which seeks to expand society's offerings of technical information.

November 29, 2010 Results of SAE's salary survey for mobility engineers revealed that out of 5,288 respondents, SAE International members tend to make average of $10,000-$40,000 more per year than non-members. Survey benchmarked compensation levels based on geography, education, industry sector, experience, and managerial and budgetary responsibility. Using results of survey, SAE created salary calculator on its EngineerXchange professional networking site.

November 26, 2010 American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) completed 2 engineering standards revisions: ANSI/ASAE S276.7, Slow Moving Vehicle Identification Emblem (SMV Emblem), and ANSI/ASAE S279.15, Lighting and Marking of Agricultural Equipment on Highways. While SMV Emblem standard was revised to update testing requirements for backing materials, changes to lighting/marking standard include incorporation of rotary beacons or strobe lights and LEDs on agricultural equipment.
NREL supports Wind for Schools project.

November 26, 2010 NREL's Wind for School project has installed 42 Southwest Windpower SkyStream 3.7 turbines so far, with goal of 5 new turbines each year for the 11 states already part of program. Eventually, 35 states are expected to participate. In addition to providing energy to help power schools, turbines help inspire next-generation scientists and engineers. Department of Energy envisions U.S. getting as much as 20% of its electricity from wind power by 2030, which would provide 500,000 wind-related jobs.
IPC releases PCB industry results for October 2010.

November 26, 2010 According to IPC's North American PCB Statistical Program, rigid PCB shipments were up 13.6% while bookings decreased 2.7% in Oct 2010 from Oct 2009. Year to date, rigid PCB shipments were up 19.5% and bookings have grown 25.4%. Flexible circuit shipments in Oct 2010 were up 14.7% and bookings grew 25.2% compared to October 2009. Year to date, flexible circuit shipments increased 11.0% and bookings were up 19.4%. Combined book-to-bill ratio in October 2010 slipped just under parity at 0.99.

November 26, 2010 ANSI Homeland Security Standards Panel has released final workshop report outlining recommendations for timely development of standards to support effective emergency preparedness for all. Report consolidates panel's findings from 2010 workshops that examined various aspects of standards and codes needed for reducing barriers to accessibility in emergencies. Aim of report is to educate key stakeholders on challenges and standardization gaps relating to emergency preparedness.
Equipment and Leasing and Finance Survey shows positive yearly increases.

November 26, 2010 Reporting economic activity in equipment finance sector, ELFA's Monthly Leasing and Finance Index (MLFI-25) shows overall new business volume for October to be $4.9 billion. This is up 14% compared to same period in 2009 and down 15.5% from September. Year-to-date, new business volume is up 6.0% at $46.1 billion. Credit quality also improved, as receivables over 30 days decreased to 3.0% from 3.4% in September, and losses decreased to 1.2% from prior month. Credit approvals also improved.
