Rate of Drug Approvals are lower than previously reported.

January 15, 2014 Nature Biotechnology has published peer-reviewed paper co-authored by BIO Industry Analysis and BioMedTracker, highlighting results of a study showing that overall success rate for drugs moving through clinical trials to FDA approval from late 2003 to the end of 2011 is near 1 in 10, while reports from earlier years showed rate of drug approvals to be 1 in 5 to 1 in 6. Study also shows that large molecule drugs are twice as successful in gaining approval compared to small molecule drugs.
ASTM invites papers for SPF insulation symposium.

January 14, 2014 Papers are invited for symposium on Developing Consensus Standards for Measuring Chemical Emissions from Spray Polyurethane Foam  Insulation, to be held April 30–May 1, 2015. Standardized methods are needed to assess potential impacts of SPF insulation products on indoor air quality and to establish re-entry/re-occupancy times after product installation in building and post-occupancy ventilation needs. Symposium will provide forum for exchange of ideas to aid in development of these standards.
ASTM Workshop to address VOC diffusive air sampling.

January 14, 2014 Workshop on the Advancements in VOC Diffusive Air Sampling for Indoor Air and Workplace Environments will be held April 7 in Ontario, Canada. There have been recent developments that make diffusive sampling techniques an attractive option for some indoor air, workplace environment, industrial hygiene, fence-line monitoring, and green building certification applications. Overall purpose of workshop is to present current state of technology in these sampling techniques.

January 14, 2014 NEMA welcomed introduction of Trade Promotion Authority (TPA), or fast-track, which sets objectives for U.S. bilateral, regional, and plurilateral trade negotiations while also providing for privileged and expedited consideration of future legislation to implement covered trade agreements and achieve those objectives. Congressional approval is critical to ongoing and future negotiations to open foreign markets to U.S. equipment manufacturers and associated service providers.

A 2011 ASTM Award of Merit recipient and ASTM fellow, Kropas-Hughes also received 2004 Charles W. Briggs Award from Committee E07 on Nondestructive Testing for her continuous and outstanding contributions.

January 13, 2014 EPA announced assistance to help 3 capital cities develop designs for greener, healthier neighborhoods. With assistance, Lansing, MI will develop options for transforming 14-acre parking lot into public park that showcases green infrastructure and renewable energy technologies. Madison, WI will explore ways to make pedestrian and bicycle improvements and add green infrastructure to streets in the Triangle Neighborhood, and Olympia, WA will reincorporate green infrastructure along Capitol Way.
ASTM Snowboard Standard addresses binding retention.

January 13, 2014 Snowboards that feature a single channel mounting system with removable inserts allow users to easily adjust stance position of bindings on their snowboards. ASTM F3030, Test Method for Snowboards with a Channel-Mounting System and Removable Inserts, has been developed to evaluate insert retention strength and will be helpful to snowboard manufacturers when comparing durability of different types of materials used in snowboard composite construction or new designs.

EPA funds projects to reduce pesticide risk.

January 10, 2014 EPA announced agricultural grants for Integrated Pest Management practices to reduce use of potentially harmful pesticides. Grants will go to Louisiana State University to minimize impacts to bees from insecticides used in mosquito control; University of Vermont to reduce pesticide use and improve pest control while increasing crop yields on 75 acres of hops in Northeast; and Pennsylvania State University to protect bees and crops by reducing reliance on neonicotinoid pesticide seed treatments.
2014 International CES sees record breaking numbers.

There was over two million net square feet of exhibit space, which exceeded previous year's record-setting 1.92 million net square feet. He received ASTM Award of Merit and accompanying title of fellow from F17 in 2009 for his service and leadership.
