February 25, 2011 Governing board of public-private Smart Grid Interoperability Panel (SGIP) voted in favor of new standard for 2-way data communications between utilities and their customers. Vote concerned standard for information used to communicate between utilities and customer and method for organizing information. Energy usage data model standard, achieved through completion of Priority Action Plan 10, was developed by North American Energy Standards Board at request of SGIP and NIST.
International Symposium on Robotics returns to US after 4 years.

ISR educates suppliers, users, and researchers on global developments in robotics. Topics will address methods of fixturing for airplane and automotive assembly, autonomous industrial mobile manipulators, real-time image processing of human face identification, and collision-free moving object tracking with active visual servoing.

The Pavilion, totaling over 15,000 sq ft, will host range of packaging and processing solutions focused on confectionery industry. PACK EXPO will also include first ever Pharmaceutical Pavilion and RPA's Reusable Packaging Pavilion.

ASHRAE Online Courses teach high-performance building design.

February 24, 2011 ASHRAE Learning Institute is offering 12 online instructor-led courses from late March through early May. Two courses related to high-performance building design are being offered as part of series. Basics of High Performance Building Design, taking place April 27, focuses on differences in purpose and requirements between Standards 189.1 and 90.1, while Advanced High Performance Building Design, scheduled for May 4, focuses on advanced concepts involved in applying Standards 90.1 and 189.1.
Clean Air Act Standards established for boilers, incinerators.

February 24, 2011 Addressing boilers and incinerators, US EPA issued final Clean Air Act standards that achieve significant public health protections through reductions in toxic air emissions and cut implementation cost by ~50% compared to previous proposal. EPA estimates for every dollar spent to cut pollutants, including mercury and soot, public will see $10-$24 in health benefits. These standards have come to fruition following September 2009 court order, public input, and multiple revisions.

February 24, 2011 Derived from survey of senior industry executives, Electroindustry Business Confidence Index for current North American conditions climbed to 69.6 in February, up 6 points from 63.6 in January. Index has topped 60 points in each of last 4 months, indicating sustained improvement in economic environment facing broad cross-section of electrical equipment manufacturers. According to index, 70% of survey panelists also expect to see conditions improve during next 6 months.

February 24, 2011 EPA recognized 74 leading Energy Star organizations for achievements in energy efficiency across their entire building portfolios in 2010. Through commitment to energy management, organizations together have prevented equivalent of more than 460,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually and saved more than $100 million a year. To be an Energy Star Leader, organization must show 10% improvement in energy performance across building portfolio or perform in top 25% of similar buildings nationwide.

Technical program offered near 300 sessions, 20 educational courses, and various social events. Also 600+ meetings of technical, standards, and standing committees took place, developing guidance for future of industry and ASHRAE. Updated energy savings figures for ASHRAE's energy standard were also announced.
PMA releases Business Conditions Report for February 2011.

February 23, 2011 According to the February 2011 PMA Business Conditions Report, metalforming companies anticipate continued improvement in business conditions. Report shows that 51% of participants forecast improvement in economic activity during next 3 months, up from 47% in January, while 61% of participants predict increase in orders, up from 52% in January. In addition, 48% report that shipping levels are above levels of 3 months ago, compared to 26% in January.
