February 28, 2011 ANSI Course 287, The American Way, will be held March 30, 2011 in NYC and provide in-depth look at U.S. voluntary consensus standardization and ANS development process. Attendees come to understand standard development process and procedures, ANSI accreditation benefits, and flexibility in standards development. Discussions will center on requirements contained in ANSI Essential Requirements, including those related to accreditation, standards approval, and audit requirement.

February 28, 2011 In comments filed with U.S. Trade Representative on 2011 Special 301 Review, BIO stresses the critical importance of protecting intellectual property abroad. BIO recommends that USTR elevate Thailand to Priority Foreign Country; keep Argentina, Canada, Chile, China, India, Israel, Russia, and Venezuela on Priority Watch List; elevate Philippines to Priority Watch List status; and observe developments in Japan, Taiwan, and European Patent Office to ensure that U.S. IP is properly protected.
Monthly Lease & Financing Index shows new business up 24% from 2010.

February 28, 2011 According to ELFA's Monthly Leasing and Finance Index, which reports economic activity for equipment finance sector, overall new business volume for January was $4.2 billion, up 24% compared to same period in 2010. Receivables over 30 days increased slightly to 2.8% in January from 2.7% in December, but declined by 35% compared to same period in 2010. Charge-offs declined significantly, falling to 1.0% from 1.4% in December, and also showed improvement over same period in 2010.

NREL Report Finds gHEVs reduce tailpipe emissions, maintain fuel economy.

February 25, 2011 NREL completed its yearlong technology evaluation of gasoline hybrid electric (gHEV) trucks. Report shows gHEV trucks produced reduced tailpipe emissions during all drive cycles tested in laboratory compared to diesel vehicles. Regarding fuel economy, on drive cycle representing routes with frequent stops and accelerations, gHEV trucks exhibited 20% improvement. On cycles representing routes with fewer stops and accelerations, gHEV trucks demonstrated similar fuel economy to diesels.
ASTM selected as third party certifier for USDA biobased label.

February 25, 2011 As the selected provider, ASTM International will manage the Certification Program for Biobased Products, which will determine the product and package biobased content for manufacturers and vendors that choose to participate. Products will be tested by outside accredited laboratory according to ASTM standard D6866, Test Methods for Determining the Biobased Content of Solid, Liquid, and Gaseous Samples Using Radiocarbon Analysis.

World's Farmers favor biotech crop varieties.

February 25, 2011 According to report released by the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-Biotech Applications, growers around the world continue to choose biotech crop varieties because of their contribution to agricultural productivity. ISAAA report, titled Global Status of Commercialized Biotech/GM Crops: 2010, says a record 15.4 million farmers in 29 countries are growing biotech crops on 366 million acres. Ninety-nine percent of these are resource-poor farmers in developing countries.

February 25, 2011 Governing board of public-private Smart Grid Interoperability Panel (SGIP) voted in favor of new standard for 2-way data communications between utilities and their customers. Vote concerned standard for information used to communicate between utilities and customer and method for organizing information. Energy usage data model standard, achieved through completion of Priority Action Plan 10, was developed by North American Energy Standards Board at request of SGIP and NIST.

Clean Air Act Standards established for boilers, incinerators.

February 24, 2011 Addressing boilers and incinerators, US EPA issued final Clean Air Act standards that achieve significant public health protections through reductions in toxic air emissions and cut implementation cost by ~50% compared to previous proposal. EPA estimates for every dollar spent to cut pollutants, including mercury and soot, public will see $10-$24 in health benefits. These standards have come to fruition following September 2009 court order, public input, and multiple revisions.
