GAWDA Survey shows economy's impact on members' retirement.

March 15, 2011 According to retirement survey by Welding and Gases Today, 76.9% of respondents indicate that the economy has forced them to change their retirement plans. Respondents who are business owners came in slightly less than the overall number, with 71.4% changing their retirement plans because of the economy. No GAWDA member says he or she realistically expects to retire before age 65. One third of respondents will retire between ages 70-75, while another 8.3% say they may never retire.
EPA Names U.S. Cities with most Energy Star-certified buildings.

March 15, 2011 U.S. EPA's third annual list names 25 U.S. metropolitan areas with greatest number of energy-efficient buildings which had earned Energy StarŪ certification in 2010. Surpassing growth of past several years, list shows that in 2010 more than 6,200 commercial buildings earned Energy Star. This represents increase of nearly 60% compared to 2009. As of end of 2010, more than 12,600 buildings across America have earned Energy Star since EPA awarded first certification in 1999.
Proposed Standard covers fiber reinforced plastic gratings.

March 15, 2011 Proposed standard, ASTM WK31924, Specification for Fiber Reinforced Plastic Gratings Used in Marine Construction and Shipbuilding, is being developed by Subcommittee F25.03 on Outfitting and Deck Machinery. Gratings are used on mobile offshore drilling units and floating production platforms as walkways in machinery spaces, cargo areas, and on-deck areas. Standard will cover several aspects of FRP gratings, including fire testing procedures, ultraviolet effects, and moisture absorption.
Needle Puncture Resistance Standard applies to protective clothes.

March 15, 2011 ASTM F2878, Test Method for Protective Clothing Material Resistance to Hypodermic Needle Puncture, was developed by Subcommittee F23.20 on Physical, which is part of ASTM International Committee F23 on Personal Protective Clothing and Equipment. F23 member John Cronin notes that ASTM F2878 "addresses a critical gap" by enabling users of needle-resistant personal protective equipment to "make an apples-to-apples performance comparison when evaluating various forms of protection."

March 15, 2011 ATA says DOT rule proposed in Docket No. FAA-2011-0183 would make available personal and business itineraries of law-abiding citizens at anyone's request. "The Block Aircraft Registration Request program functions much like a 'Do Not Call' list for private aircraft owners," said AIA's Marion C. Blakey, who said rule would take away that right to privacy. Under proposed rule, business competitors would also be able to track movements of private aircraft owners.
Language Translation Devices sent to U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan.

March 15, 2011 Due to shortage of human translators, 200 NIST-tested, smartphone-based language translation devices have been sent to 101st Airborne in Afghanistan to assist U.S. soldiers in communicating with local population. Devices allow soldiers to gather critical information without needing to learn Dari and Pashto languages. During NIST testing, subjects were immersed in realistic military scenarios, which yielded quantitative and qualitative data showing how effectively systems will help military personnel.

March 15, 2011 Junhwan Kim and Ram D. Sriram from NIST, along with Michael J. Pratt of LMR Systems and Raj G. Iyer of Army TACOM were selected to receive "2011 Most Cited Paper Award" from the journal Computer-Aided Design for their co-authored paper, "Standardized Data Exchange of CAD models with Design Intent," published in 2008. Paper suggests an implementable foundation for CAD data exchange with the preservation of design intent, based on the use of newly published parts of ISO 10303.

March 15, 2011 Dr. Nabil Nasr invited NIST to participate in the Strategic Dialogue on Remanufacturing Policy meeting, hosted by the Council on Competitiveness and Rochester Institute of Technology, which addressed the pressing issues facing remanufacturers. Participants will also play role in developing agenda and roadmap for re-launch of the Remanufacturing Industries Council, setting initial directions for the Council, and identifying/prioritizing cross-cutting challenges for the Council to address.

Developed by Subcommittee E50.02 on Real Estate Assessment and Management, standard will complement existing building rating and certification systems and facilitate improved benchmarking and building labeling.

EPA issues update to national air toxics data.

March 14, 2011 EPA has released 4th update of National Air Toxics Assessment (NATA) computer tool, which helps federal, state, and local governments better understand potential health risks from exposure to air toxics. Based on assessment, air toxic emissions fell by 42%, between 1990 and 2005, from industrial and mobile sources. NATA is used to identify geographic areas, pollutants, and types of emission sources that need analysis to characterize potential risks and determine how to protect public health.
