February 21, 2011 Papers are invited for 32nd Symposium on Pesticide Formulation and Delivery: Innovating Legacy Products for New Uses, which will occur November 1-3, 2011 in Tampa, FL. In addition to Dicamba and 2,4-D formulation/delivery innovations, call for papers welcomes several topics: regulatory updates and direction, biopesticide developments, formulation components and advances, adjuvants, test methods, and drift reduction. Interested parties must submit 250-300 word abstract by March 25.
EPA awards grants to support nanotechnology research.

February 21, 2011 U.S. EPA has awarded $5.5 million to 3 consortia to support research on nanotechnology. Scientific information developed from research can help guide EPA and other agencies in decisions about safety of new materials and products that are made using nanotechnology. Specifically, researchers can determine whether certain nanomaterials can leach out of products such as paints, plastics, and fabrics when they are used or disposed of and whether they could become toxic to people and environment.

NEMA publishes revisions of two C18 series battery standards.

February 18, 2011 NEMA has published revisions to ANSI C18.1M, Part 2-2011 ANS for Portable Primary Cells and Batteries with Aqueous Electrolyte-Safety Standard. It has also revised ANSI C18.3M, Part 2-2011 ANS for Portable Lithium Primary Cells and Batteries-Safety Standard that includes annex with guidance for electrical device designers. Produced by Accredited Standards Committee C18 on Portable Cells and Batteries, revisions include updated safety tests and content to keep current with best practices.

February 18, 2011 Fostered and championed by NIST in the 1990s, Role-Based Access Control establishes standard levels of access to various computing resources and networks of organization that are tailored to specific employee roles or job functions. In study prepared for NIST, researchers at RTI International estimate that RBAC technology itself has generated $6.1 billion in net economic benefits to industry, of which $1.1 billion is attributable to NIST's work.

Standard covers types, configurations, and nomenclature; definitions; design and application; and installation, operation, and maintenance. HI also updated 2004 edition of standard on air-operated pump tests and published Air Operated Pump Tests ANSI/HI 10.6-2010.

February 17, 2011 Halon 1211, which is used in hand-held fire extinguishers on civilian aircraft, will be tested by ASTM standard to ensure that product will provide required level of fire protection and is free of harmful impurities that could affect its safety in use. ASTM D7673, Specification for Halon 1211, Bromochlorodifluoromethane, includes detailed gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectra test methodology that ensures detection and identification of impurities.
