January 12, 2011 NTSB held public Board meeting to consider safety study on airbags in general aviation aircraft. NTSB initiated study to examine effectiveness of airbags in mitigating occupant injury in survivable GA accident, to identify any unintended consequences of airbag deployments, and to develop procedures to assist investigators in documenting airbag systems in future investigations. January 12, 2011 PMI is pleased to announce that the national Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act was passed on December 17, 2010 during the lame duck session and was signed into law by President Obama on January 4, 2011. This bill lowers national standard for lead in faucets, pipes, and pipefittings from 8.0% to 0.25%. There is widespread support within the industry for this legislation, including members of PMI, which make up 95% of small, medium, and large plumbing manufacturers.

An ASTM International fellow and Award of Merit recipient for contributions to Committee B09 on Metal Powders and Metal Powder Products, Thornton currently serves as B09's first vice chairman and as chairman of three B09 subcommittees. This figure, reported by companies participating in USMTC program, is down 17.7% from October but up 81.1% compared to November 2009. With year-to-date total of $2,792.58 million, 2010 is up 82.7% from previous year. AMTDA President Peter Borden stated that these numbers "reflect the continuing rebound of the U.S. manufacturing sector."

Over 14.3 million lines were added in third quarter alone, representing 2.88% growth over previous quarter. In addition, total number of IPTV subscribers worldwide now stands at 41.9 million, representing growth of 7.3% in 3 months to end September.

January 10, 2011 U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and U.S. EPA are announcing steps to ensure that standards and guidelines on fluoride in drinking water continue to provide maximum protection to American people to support good dental health, especially in children. HHS is proposing that the recommended level of fluoride in drinking water can be set at lowest end of current optimal range to prevent tooth decay, and EPA is initiating review of the maximum amount of fluoride allowed in drinking water.

January 7, 2011 Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act reduces amount of lead allowed in plumbing products that contact drinking water. In 2008, Annex G was incorporated into NSF/ANSI Standard 61: Drinking Water System Components - Health Effects and includes requirements limiting weighted average of lead content in plumbing products to 0.25%. Plumbing devices already certified to NSF Standard 61, Annex G fully comply with lead-content requirements of this newly passed Act.

January 7, 2011 ASTM International Committee F04 on Medical and Surgical Materials and Devices has approved ASTM F2777, Test Method for Evaluating Knee Bearing (Tibial Insert) Endurance and Deformation Under High Flexion. According to F04.22 vice chairman Leslie Gilbertson, this standard and 3 previously approved standards address possible failure mechanisms of mobile knee systems as well as those of fixed bearing knees in some instances.
