March 30, 2011 Proposed standard ASTM WK31972, Test Method for Mechanical and Electrical Testing of Insulating Links for Lifting Equipment, incorporates design proof test to verify that insulating link between hook and load line on cranes meets minimum specifications for which manufacturer has designed it. Additionally included, periodically performed test (by user or designated agent) ensures component continues to meet safety requirements once in use.
FAA installs 150th Alaska weather camera.

March 30, 2011 In an ongoing effort to improve aviation safety in Alaska, FAA has turned on its 150th weather camera in Talkeetna, a historic village whose airport is the hub for mountain climbing and sightseeing flights to Mt. McKinley. Positioned to view sky conditions around airports, air routes, and mountain passes, cameras provide pilots with critical weather information to help them decide whether it is safe to fly. FAA plans to install weather cameras at an additional 24 sites in Alaska this year.

NTSB Forum to review progress of truck and bus safety.

March 25, 2011 As part of its continued focus on large truck and bus safety, NTSB will convene public forum May 10-11, 2011, to review progress that has been made since NTSB held a series of public hearings on the matter in 1999-2000. Forum will be chaired by NTSB Board Member Robert L. Sumwalt and will focus on such issues as government oversight, carrier operations, driver training and licensing, driver safety and health, and enhanced vehicle safety technologies.

West Coast Radiation Levels pose no health risks.

March 24, 2011 During analysis of CA and WA RadNet air monitor filters, U.S. EPA identified trace amounts of radioactive iodine, cesium, and tellurium consistent with Japanese nuclear incident. Radiation levels detected on filters from all monitors are hundreds of thousands to millions of times below levels of concern. Additionally, preliminary monitor results in Hawaii detected minuscule levels of isotope also consistent with Japanese nuclear incident but far below any level of concern for human health.
