January 28, 2014 ASTM has released Manual 32, Test Sieving Methods: Guidelines for Establishing Sieve Analysis Procedures, 5th Edition. Book is intended as a supplement to several ASTM standards related to sieve analysis of materials, including ASTM E11, Specification for Woven Wire Test Sieve Cloth and Test Sieves. It includes updates to terminology; new technology developments in sieves, sieve shakers, and procedures; and updated tables and figures that correlate with latest ASTM standards.

NREL Study addresses active power control of wind turbines.

January 28, 2014 NREL, along with partners from Electric Power Research Institute and University of Colorado have completed comprehensive study titled "Active Power Controls from Wind Power: Bridging the Gaps." Study found that wind power can support power system by adjusting its power output to enhance system reliability. Active power control helps balance load with generation at various times, avoiding erroneous power flows, involuntary load shedding, machine damage, and risk of potential blackouts.

ASTM Standard addresses airborne ultrasound packaging tests.

January 24, 2014 Airborne ultrasound is one of the few solutions that nondestructively measures physical integrity and quality of flexible packaging seals. Technology described in ASTM F3004, Test Method for Evaluation of Seal Quality and Integrity Using Airborne Ultrasound, is used to image seals and evaluate variances across entire active seal area to ensure even temperature and pressure distribution during sealing process. It will be useful for manufacturers, regulatory bodies, and laboratories.

January 24, 2014 ASTM E2849, Practice for Professional Certification Performance Testing, focuses on 42 issues specific to personnel performance test development and implementation. Developed by Subcommittee E36.80 on Personnel Performance Testing and Assessment, this new ASTM International standard, according to E36.80 chairman Wallace Judd, "will assure a uniform quality to the performance testing of professionals in many industries.” E36.80 welcomes participation in its standards developing activities.

ASTM developing proposed nitrate reductase standard.

January 23, 2014 Proposed ASTM WK27289, Test Methods for Nitrite-Nitrate in Water by Nitrate Reductase, will present a means to perform nitrate analysis of water without the use of hazardous chemicals. According to William Lipps, vice chairman of Subcommittee D19.05 on Inorganic Constituents in Water, part of ASTM International Committee D19 on Water, new standard will enable testing laboratories with discrete analyzers to eliminate cadmium reduction methods with a more reliable means to measure nitrate.

EPA takes step in implementing electronic manifest.

January 23, 2014 EPA issued final rule that is a crucial step in the development of a national electronic manifest system, which will upgrade paper-based system of tracking hazardous waste to an electronic one. Rule authorizes use of e-Manifests to track hazardous wastes under Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. Once implemented, national e-Manifest system will provide greater access for emergency responders to information about types and sources of hazardous waste that are in transit.
EPA releases final Bristol Bay Assessment.

January 23, 2014 Over 3 years, EPA compiled the best, most current science on the Bristol Bay watershed to understand how large-scale mining could impact this area. EPA's report, titled "An Assessment of Potential Mining Impacts on Salmon Ecosystems of Bristol Bay, Alaska," concludes that large-scale copper and gold mining poses risks to salmon and Alaska Native cultures. Bristol Bay produces nearly 50% of the world’s wild sockeye salmon with runs averaging 37.5 million fish each year.
NTSB Releases Top 10 transportation improvements sought in 2014.

January 23, 2014 NTSB released its 2014 Most Wanted List, which aggregates top 10 advocacy and awareness priorities for 2014. These include, for first time, improving operational safety in rail mass transit. Other new additions include helicopter operations, occupant protection, and passenger vessel safety. Furthermore, list includes fire safety, perils of distraction, general aviation, pipeline safety, positive train control, and substance-impaired driving.
