NASA reveals early findings of Planck mission.

January 17, 2011 Planck, launched in May 2009 by European Space Agency with contributions from NASA, has released data catalog of approximately 10,000 star-forming cold cores in universe. Data include cold cores with temperatures as low as 7 above absolute zero, and most massive clusters of galaxies ever seen, using detectors chilled to 0.1K. Observing sky at 9 wavelengths of light, mission seeks to detect light from just few hundred thousand years after Big Bang to help understand universe.

He began research and development company after graduating college, and has invented high technology printed circuits for Delphi, Rockwell Collins, Boeing, NASA, and Allied Signal. Composite Materials Standard will aid delamination prediction.

January 17, 2011 Proposed standard ASTM WK30580, Guide for Development of Benchmark Solutions for Composite Delamination Growth Analysis, is being developed by Subcommittee D30.02 on Research and Mechanics. National Institute of Aerospace associate research fellow Ronald Krueger said proposed guide will include benchmark solutions for delamination onset and growth in representative composite coupons. Standard will also describe approach that users can follow to develop their own benchmark solutions.

January 14, 2011 Mary C. McKiel, Ph.D., standards executive with the U.S. EPA in Washington, D.C., has been elected vice chairman of the ASTM International Board of Directors for 2011-2012. McKiel has worked on various ASTM committees for more than 20 years and currently serves on Committees E50 on Environmental Assessment, Risk Management and Corrective Action and E60 on Sustainability. At EPA, McKiel directs agency's implementation of the National Technology Transfer and Advancement Act and OMB Circular A-119.

January 14, 2011 According to AIA's Quarterly Machine Vision Sales Tracking Report, sales of machine vision components rose substantially in third quarter 2010. Overall, year-over-year growth hit 68%, up from 60% in second quarter 2010 and 34% in first quarter. Report also disclosed that 68% of companies submitting data for report expect sales to improve in next 6 reported months. Of remaining companies, 28% anticipate sales at or near level reached in third quarter, and 4% believe sales will decrease.
EPA to defer GHG permitting for industries that use biomass.

January 14, 2011 U.S. EPA is announcing its plan to defer, for 3 years, greenhouse gas permitting requirements for carbon dioxide emissions from biomass-fired and other biogenic sources. Agency intends to use this time to seek further independent scientific analysis of this issue and then to develop a rulemaking on how these emissions should be treated in determining whether Clean Air Act permit is required. EPA will also further consider comments it received from its July 2010 Call for Information.

NTSB Study addresses airbags in general aviation accidents.

January 13, 2011 Adopted by NTSB, study concluded that general aviation airplanes equipped with airbags provide additional protection to occupants in accidents involving survivable forward impacts. The study, which examined 88 accidents involving airbag-equipped airplanes, found no instances where airbag caused harm in properly restrained occupants. Within group of 10 survivable accidents, 12 occupants experienced airbag deployments, and study found that airbag likely mitigated injuries for 2 of the occupants.
