March 4, 2011 Scheduled for June 28-29, 2012, Dynamic Testing of Soil and Rock: Field and Laboratory symposium will assess state-of-the-art knowledge of methods of determining shear modulus, damping, and shear wave velocity for purposes of improving ASTM standards. Some topics of interest include comparison of in situ and laboratory testing; preparation of soft and very stiff samples; in situ high-level strain measurements; dynamic properties of unsaturated soils; and testing of calcareous materials.
Funding Lets High School CIM Centers add robotics design system.

March 4, 2011 Project Lead The Way has received $400,000 in grant funding from SME Education Foundation for implementation of VEX Robotics Design System at high school Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) centers across country. This will give students access to hands-on robotics curriculum in classroom in vein similar to that for math and science. Additional $75,000 will provide VEX kits for PLTW master teachers responsible for training of Project Lead The Way instructors.

Sponsored by ASTM International Committee E44 on Solar, Geothermal, and Other Alternative Energy Sources, and GANA, workshop will be held in conjunction with June standards development meetings of Committee E44. Event will showcase presentations from glass and glazing industry as well as solar industry. Researchers, scientists, and professionals can submit abstract by March 31, 2011.

March 3, 2011 AEM-hosted briefing of industry groups and DC-based member companies addressed FCC interim decision on bandwidth adjacent to GPS spectrum. Over objections of industry groups and federal agencies, FCC granted waiver for new company to build new broadband network. Those that objected felt new spectrum network would run too close to GPS spectrum and could cause significant interference. GPS providers believe this issue needs to be studied objectively and extensively.

March 3, 2011 American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) initiated a project to revise material and safety references cited in ANSI/ASAE S483.1, Rotary Mower Blade Ductility Test. This decision stems from identification of several outdated references found during regular periodic review of said document 5 years after its November 2005 revision. Expected completion date of new revision is late June 2011.
Demand for Industrial Control Equipment continues to rise.

March 3, 2011 During fourth quarter of 2010, NEMA's Primary Industrial Controls Index increased 3.3% on quarter-to-quarter basis. Index has registered sequential gains in 5 of last 6 quarters, and, with this latest increase, is nearly 24% above its level of one year earlier. Primary Industrial Controls and Adjustable Speed Drives Index, which serves as broader measure of industrial controls demand, advanced 2.5% between third and fourth quarter of 2010 and registered 21.6% gain versus 4Q 2009.
Lighting Equipment Demand remained weak in 4Q 2010.

March 3, 2011 NEMA's Lighting Systems Index receded 2.1% on quarter-to-quarter basis during 4Q 2010. Year-over-year results indicated aggregate lighting equipment demand has not improved appreciably since recovery began and remains below levels observed during previous economic expansion. Among 5 lighting systems products included in index, emergency lighting, ballasts, and large lamps posted year-over-year declines in shipments, while fixtures and miniature lamps registered solid gains.

IPC releases PCB industry results for January 2011.

March 3, 2011 According to IPC's North American PCB Statistical Program, rigid PCB shipments were up 3.7% and bookings decreased 7.7% in January 2011 from January 2010, while book-to-bill ratio edged up to 0.97. Flexible circuit shipments were up 10.7% while bookings were up 5.3% compared to January 2010, and book-to-bill ratio climbed above parity to 1.01. For rigid PCBs and flexible circuits combined, industry shipments in January 2011 increased 4.3% from January 2010.

Courses will offer hands-on technical knowledge on fluid power and hydraulics with focus on hydraulic fluids and their applications; design, modeling, and control of hybrid vehicles; noise in hydraulic fluid power systems; and basic lubrication.

Program will provide Congress, stakeholders, and public with information about these emissions while helping businesses identify cost-effective ways to reduce them. To ensure requirements are practical and understandable, agency is finalizing user-friendly online electronic reporting platform.

March 2, 2011 NEMA has published LSD 14 Guidelines on Application of Dimming to High-Intensity Discharge (HID) Lamps. Paper provides guidance on application, combination, and practice of dimming of HID lighting systems. Technologies discussed include high-pressure sodium, metal halide, and mercury vapor, each of which responds differently to manipulation. Along with additional systems, revision incorporates updated recommendations for dimming in terms of output and systems employed.
