SIAA CoDiE Award Finalists announced in digital content categories.

January 19, 2011 SIAA has announced finalists for 2011 CODiE Awards in categories relating to digital content aggregation, distribution, management, and publishing. Twenty-nine products from 16 companies were selected as finalists from among over 100 nominations submitted by 40 companies, with LexisNexis representing 6 products across 4 categories. Winners will be announced at CODiE Awards Dinner on January 25, to be held in conjunction with 2011 Information Industry Summit in New York City.

January 19, 2011 According to January 2011 Business Conditions Report, metalforming companies are optimistic about business conditions during next 3 months. Report shows that 47% of participants forecast improvement in economic activity, up from 40% in December, while 43% predict activity will remain unchanged, and only 10% report that activity will decline. Additionally, 52% of participants predict increase in incoming orders for next 3 months, and 26% report that shipping levels are above levels of 3 months ago.
EPA's Permit Suspension creates widespread uncertainty.

January 19, 2011 NAM Executive Vice President and incoming President Jay Timmons issued comment about EPA's action to halt a Section 404 permit issued under the Clean Water Act for disposal of mining waste from Mingo Logan's Spruce No. 1 surface mine in West Virginia. According to Timmons, EPA's action to suspend a properly issued, valid permit will create uncertainty for all Section 404 permit holders and will have negative impact on manufacturing and job creation.
ASTM Antimicrobial Agents Subcommittee approves 2 new standards.

January 18, 2011 Part of Committee E35 on Pesticides and Alternative Control Agents, ASTM Subcommittee E35.15 on Antimicrobial Agents has approved 2 standards that will be used by manufacturers of hand soaps and contract testing laboratories. They include ASTM E2783, Test Method for Assessment of Antimicrobial Activity for Water Miscible Compounds Using Time-Kill Procedure and ASTM E2784, Test Method for Evaluation of the Effectiveness of Handwash Formulations Using Paper Towel Method of Hand Contamination.
Proposed ASTM Standard to focus on selection of assessors.

January 18, 2011 Proposed new standard, ASTM WK30847, Guide for Selection of Assessors for Sensory Training, will help users determine appropriate assessors, give general guidelines for ways to select and recruit respondents, and list benefit and drawbacks in selecting certain assessors. Proposed standard will be divided into three major areas: selection of assessors for consumer and affective testing, descriptive testing, and difference testing.
Energy Economy Boom negatively impacts North Dakota roads.

January 18, 2011 North Dakota is experiencing an economic boom due to US Geological Survey estimate from April 2008, which proclaimed presence of millions of barrels of recoverable crude oil. Two Minute State DOT Update featured North Dakota DoT Director Francis Ziegler, who commented that this is good news. He also noted that roads which "were in great shape" had 2 or 3 in. ruts in them 2 months later due to travel of oil crews. More investment will be needed, Ziegler said, for upkeep of roads and bridges.

Bonazza, Ph.D., retired chemist from TI Automotive, LLC, has received 2010 ASTM International Award of Merit for contributions to ASTM Committee D02 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants. Bonazza works on several D02 subcommittees and served as chairman of Subcommittee D02.A0 on Gasoline and Oygenated Fuels. Member of ASTM International and Committee D02 since 1994, he also served as first vice chairman of D02 from 2006-2008 and as director on ASM board from 2008-2010.
NASA Telescopes help identify most distant galaxy cluster.

January 17, 2011 Astronomers have uncovered a burgeoning galactic metropolis, the most distant known in the early universe. The developing proto-cluster, named COSMOS-AzTEC3, was discovered and characterized by multi-wavelength telescopes, including NASA's Spitzer, Chandra, and Hubble space telescopes, and ground-based W.M. Keck Observatory and Japan's Subaru Telescope. Roughly 12.6 billion light-years away from Earth, COSMOS-AzTEC3 has extreme bursts of star formation and one enormous feeding black hole.

January 17, 2011 Planck, launched in May 2009 by European Space Agency with contributions from NASA, has released data catalog of approximately 10,000 star-forming cold cores in universe. Data include cold cores with temperatures as low as 7 above absolute zero, and most massive clusters of galaxies ever seen, using detectors chilled to 0.1K. Observing sky at 9 wavelengths of light, mission seeks to detect light from just few hundred thousand years after Big Bang to help understand universe.

Composite Materials Standard will aid delamination prediction.

January 17, 2011 Proposed standard ASTM WK30580, Guide for Development of Benchmark Solutions for Composite Delamination Growth Analysis, is being developed by Subcommittee D30.02 on Research and Mechanics. National Institute of Aerospace associate research fellow Ronald Krueger said proposed guide will include benchmark solutions for delamination onset and growth in representative composite coupons. Standard will also describe approach that users can follow to develop their own benchmark solutions.

January 14, 2011 According to AIA's Quarterly Machine Vision Sales Tracking Report, sales of machine vision components rose substantially in third quarter 2010. Overall, year-over-year growth hit 68%, up from 60% in second quarter 2010 and 34% in first quarter. Report also disclosed that 68% of companies submitting data for report expect sales to improve in next 6 reported months. Of remaining companies, 28% anticipate sales at or near level reached in third quarter, and 4% believe sales will decrease.
EPA to defer GHG permitting for industries that use biomass.

January 14, 2011 U.S. EPA is announcing its plan to defer, for 3 years, greenhouse gas permitting requirements for carbon dioxide emissions from biomass-fired and other biogenic sources. Agency intends to use this time to seek further independent scientific analysis of this issue and then to develop a rulemaking on how these emissions should be treated in determining whether Clean Air Act permit is required. EPA will also further consider comments it received from its July 2010 Call for Information.
