March 24, 2011 Comprehensive data exists on western clothing insulation values but little research exists on non-western. Information on attire such as saris could influence design of ventilation and air-conditioning systems to provide the best thermal comfort for occupants. ASHRAE's project will also look at how different fabrics and body postures and movements impact insulation of cloth. Results would be of importance to ASHRAE and ISO standards, building system designers, and vehicle designers worldwide.
NREL to test multi-megawatt wind turbine drivetrain.

March 24, 2011 NREL has released first call for proposals from wind industry companies interested in forming a partnership with NREL to test a multi-megawatt wind turbine drivetrain. Primary objective of Cooperative Research and Development Agreement is to commission NREL's new test facility by conducting an integrated system test on the partner's test article. Test will begin in July 2012, will last 2-4 months, and will be followed by customer-specified testing of article for additional 1-4 months.

Pilarz, senior director of Mattel/Fisher-Price product safety in East Aurora, NY, and 2011 chairman of ASTM board of directors, received ASTM Margaret Dana Award from Committee F15 on Consumer Products. Pilarz received award in recognition of her efforts in support of Committee F15 and for her commitment to safety through development of global safety standards. She was also honored with the 2006 ASTM Award of Merit and accompanying title of fellow for her contributions to F15.
Equipment Finance Economic Survey shows new business growth.

March 24, 2011 ELFA's Monthly Leasing and Finance Index (MLFI-25) shows overall new business volume for February up 28% compared to same period in 2010 and down "a tick" compared to prior month. Receivables over 30 days increased to 3.1% from 2.8% in Jan but declined 47% compared to 2010. Also, charge-offs increased from 0.9% in Jan to 1.0% in Feb. Compared to prior year, new application approvals increased to 76%, and 61% of participants reported submitting more transactions for approval during Feb.

March 23, 2011 Described in Review of Scientific Instruments, NIST-developed device induces temperature-caused strains on sealant specimens while monitoring loads and displacements. It consists of segments of PVC pipe, affixed to rigid base, that are exposed to changes in outdoor weather conditions, which cause sealants to be stretched, compressed, and pulled. Testing device design, incorporated in new ASTM draft standard, can measure strength of different materials.

March 23, 2011 NEMA has published 1 amendment, errata, and 7 reaffirmations to ANSI C37 series for switchgear, which provides conformance test procedures for circuit breakers and switchgear used in electrical distribution systems. Amendment was developed to coordinate selected conformance tests and procedures with ANSI/IEEE C37.20.1-2002 and to recognize that standard's amendment, ANSI/IEEE C37.20.1a-2005. Errata were published to ANSI C37.51 to correct typographical error in clause 5.8.2, Cycles of Operation.
