EPA proposes national standards for mercury pollution.

March 17, 2011 In response to court deadline, U.S. EPA proposed the first-ever national standards for mercury, arsenic, and other toxic air pollution from power plants. New standards would require many power plants to install pollution control technologies to cut harmful emissions to help prevent as many as 17,000 premature deaths a year. Rule will also provide employment for thousands, by supporting 31,000 short-term construction jobs and 9,000 long-term utility jobs.

March 17, 2011 Results of an IPC Survey on the Impact of US Conflict Minerals Reporting Requirements estimates that costs of reporting requirements proposed by U.S. SEC to total $279 million for due diligence alone in its first year of implementation compared to government's estimate of $16.5 million. Additional estimated costs - software, staff, training, legal expenses, third-party audits - totaled median of $170,000 per company in electronic interconnect industry.
ANSI to form Electric Vehicles Standards Panel.

March 17, 2011 Meeting convened by ANSI has resulted in agreement by key stakeholders to develop standardization roadmap to enable safe, mass deployment of electric vehicles and associated infrastructure in U.S. Electric Vehicles Standards Panel will provide coherent and coordinated U.S. policy and technical input to relevant regional and international audiences on needed standards and conformity assessment programs, as well as liaise and coordinate with other electric vehicle initiatives.

March 17, 2011 New specifications for diesel-electric locomotives were approved by Next Generation Corridor Equipment Pool Committee, the next step in a national effort to make it easier, faster, and cheaper to build and purchase rail cars and other equipment for America's emerging high-speed and inter-city passenger rail program. Any state using federal funds for its passenger rail program must use equipment that meets these specifications.

March 16, 2011 Described in March 10 issue of Nature, experiments performed by NIST physicists demonstrated electromechanical circuit in which microwaves communicate with vibrating mechanical component 1,000 times more vigorously than previous experiments. Potential uses include processing information and controlling motion of objects at quantum scale. According to first author John Teufel, the experiment is a step toward entanglement between the microwave photons and the drum motion.

HID Lamp Indexes show declines during fourth quarter.

March 16, 2011 NEMA's shipment indexes for HID lamps declined by 11.7%, 17.1%, and 0.9% on year-over-year basis for sodium vapor, mercury vapor, and metal halide lamps, respectively. For year as whole, shipments of mercury vapor lamps declined 2.7% compared to 2009, while sodium vapor and metal halide HID lamp shipments saw respective increases of 1.1% and 5.2%. Sodium vapor lamps increased in market share, while that of metal halide lamps and mercury vapor lamps witnessed declines.

March 16, 2011 To aid transition from IPv4 to IPv6, some Internet providers are issuing dual-mode cable modems that support both protocols. ANSI/SCTE 140 2007, Cable Modem IPv4 and IPv6 eRouter Specification, from ANSI member and accredited standards developer Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers allows both IPv4- and IPv6-enabled devices to connect to Internet. Development of IPv6 is being led by Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), which cooperates where possible with ISO and IEC JTC 1.
