April 7, 2011 ASTM's Corrosion Testing course will provide clear understanding of the proper application of ASTM B117, Standard Practice for Operating Salt Spray (Fog) Apparatus, and will furnish information regarding corrosion testing in general so that attendees can understand the significance of the salt fog test. Two-day, hands-on training course will also include demonstrations on mixing solutions, cleaning coupons and samples, and evaluation of results and samples.

April 7, 2011 National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), in partnership with industry-academia team led by California Center for Sustainable Energy (CCSE), aims to give batteries from electric drive vehicles (EV) second life. Searching for best possible second-use strategies, project will begin with technical and economic analysis addressing all aspects of battery lifecycle. Test program will verify findings, particularly battery lifetimes, and field test will involve deploying aged EV batteries.

In addition, IPC will be raising funds for the Japanese Red Cross through a charity raffle with a grand prize of $2,000 American Express gift card, donated by IPC.

April 7, 2011 On March 28, BIO hosted U.S./China Biotechnology Examiner Workshop with U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and China's State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO). Workshop, which was organized by BIO for SIPO examiners, focused on biotechnology patenting and encouraged bilateral cooperation between SIPO and USPTO. BIO will work with SIPO to strengthen China's regulatory system to encourage innovation and protect intellectual property within the country.
NIST Researchers create circuit of ultracold gas atoms.

April 6, 2011 NIST and University of Maryland researchers have created donut-shaped loop of ultracold gas atoms circulating in current. This atom circuit includes adjustable barrier that controls flow of atom current to specific allowed values. Representing implementation of complete atom circuit, containing superfluid ring of current and tunable weak link barrier, research is described in Superflow in a Toroidal Bose-Einstein Condensate: an Atom Circuit with a Tunable Weak Link.
Noise Thermometry System measures Boltzmann constant.

April 6, 2011 Researchers at NIST have for the first time used an apparatus that relies on the "noise" of jiggling electrons to make highly accurate measurements of the Boltzmann constant, which relates energy to temperature for individual particles such as atoms. Johnson noise thermometry technique is simpler and more compact than other methods for measuring the constant and could advance international efforts to revamp the world's scientific measurement system.

Through initiative, ODVA will develop comprehensive and open interoperability framework that will help machine builders drive innovation and productivity improvements for end users. ODVA's open approach will include alliances with other vendor-neutral standards development organizations, starting with SERCOS International and OPC Foundation, to foster cross-collaboration.

April 6, 2011 Scheduled for May 17-19, Sept 20-22, and Nov 15-17, technical and professional training course titled Gasoline: Specifications, Testing and Technology, focuses on properties and specs of gasoline and how they affect gasoline performance in a spark ignition engine. Topics include octane measurements and enhancers, volatility, additives, oxygenates, reformulated gasoline, and impact of the Clean Air Act. In addition, course will feature tour of fuel test laboratory or fuel distribution terminal.
Engine Coolants Committee announces 3 subcommittees.

April 6, 2011 ASTM International Committee D15 on Engine Coolants has formed 3 new subcommittees. Subcommittee D15.22 on Non-Aqueous Coolants will address lack of current ASTM standards in this area, while D15.25 on Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) aims to provide laboratory and field determinations for proper blends in DEF. Also, D15.30 on Industrial Heat Transfer Fluids will propose standards for industrial heat transfer fluids that will comprise chemical composition standards and performance tests.

FAA to mandate inspections for early models of 737 aircraft.

April 6, 2011 FAA will issue emergency directive that will require initial and repetitive electromagnetic inspections for fatigue damage in specific early Boeing 737 models that have accumulated more than 30,000 flight cycles. This action, designed to detect cracking in specific part of aircraft that cannot be spotted with visual inspection, will initially apply to total of approximately 175 aircraft worldwide, 80 of which are U.S.-registered aircraft.

April 6, 2011 International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS), which spanned 1,137,375 net sq-ft at Chicago's McCormick Place in September 2010, has been named the No. 2 trade show in the U.S. Total registration for the 6-day event was 82,411, with 1,728 companies exhibiting in 1,180 booths. The No. 3 show, held at the Las Vegas Convention Center, was the Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Institute's biennial Pack Expo International/Process Expo/CPP Expo, with 1,054,505 net square feet.
CONEXPO-CON/AGG and IFPE 2011 report resounding success.

April 5, 2011 CONEXPO-CON/AGG and IFPE 2011 expositions, held March 22-26, attracted nearly 120,000 registered attendees, of which 24% were international representatives from 150+ countries. Altogether on show floor, 2,400+ exhibitors took up more than 2.34 million net square feet of exhibit space - largest for IFPE and second largest for CONEXPO-CON/AGG. Together, expositions offered 860+ co-located events, educational programs, pre-planned meetings, training, and certification programs.
BIO commends launch of House patent reform process.

April 5, 2011 BIO commends introduction of the America Invents Act, H.R. 1249 in the U.S. House of Representatives. According to BIO President and CEO Jim Greenwood, BIO is pleased that legislation will end diversion of fees collected by U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, allowing agency to use all of its fees to hire more examiners and reduce backlog of pending applications. BIO also commends transition to "first-to-file" system and new supplemental examination proceeding for use by patent owners.
NEMA publishes revision to white LED binning standard.

April 5, 2011 NEMA has published SSL 3-2011 High-Power White LED Binning for General Illumination, which offers categorization areas, called bins, for chromaticity, forward voltage measurements, and luminous flux for LEDs used in general lighting. Binning process helps ensure continuity among suppliers. Robert Hick of Leviton, and chair of Solid State Lighting Section, said that revision provides binning characteristics for LEDs suitable to aid manufacturers, integrators, and end users.
NEMA welcomes House legislation on lithium battery standards.

April 5, 2011 House of Representatives has approved HR 658, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Reauthorization and Reform Act. It includes NEMA-backed provision directing U.S. DOT to ensure its regulations governing air transport of Li-Ion or lithium metal batteries, and products with them, are not more stringent than international requirements in place at any time. One exception allowed is to continue U.S. prohibition of air shipment of lithium metal cells and batteries on passenger aircraft.

April 5, 2011 Stantec's engineering design and sustainability consulting for one of the country's largest highly efficient buildings - NREL's Research Support Facility - was recognized with a national Engineering Excellence Grand Award from ACEC. The $64 million, 222,000 sq. ft office building was recognized as a showcase for energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies and was designed so that its occupants consume only the amount of energy generated by renewable power on and near building.
