February 11, 2011 US EPA notified 5 companies that identities of 14 chemicals associated with number of health and safety studies submitted under Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) and claimed as confidential are not eligible for confidential treatment. This action comes as part Administrator Lisa P. Jackson's continuing efforts towards increasing public access to chemical information and understanding risks posed by chemicals in our environment.

February 11, 2011 Joint task force of PTDA and Bearing Specialists Association has approved Product & Price Information Format (PPIF) v2.2. Revision adds optional fields where suppliers can insert name of image file and/or URL of file. Effective March 31, 2011, it also adds optional field where supplier can provide harmonized tariff code, up to ten-digit level, from Harmonized Tariff Schedule of United States. PPIF has been used since 1999 and has streamlined process of updating price/product information.
ASTM Leather Committee approves wet blue/wet white standard.

February 11, 2011 Wet blue and wet white are intermediate products used by tanneries that process natural hides and skins into leather. Natural fats and oils need to be largely removed from wet blue and wet white for leather processing to be done properly, but no standard had previously existed to evaluate effectiveness of such removal. ASTM International Committee D31 on Leather has developed such a standard, ASTM D7674, Test Method for Hexane/Petroleum Ether Extract in Wet Blue and Wet White.

February 11, 2011 Developed by Subcommittee F25.07 on General Requirements, ASTM F2876, Practice for Thermal Rating and Installation of Internal Combustion Engine Packages for Use in Hazardous Locations in Marine Applications will help prevent fire and explosions on decks of tank vessels used to transport hazardous products. Primary users will include engine manufacturers, vessel builders and crew, and third party businesses that design and install engines in potentially hazardous locations.

North American Robotics Companies post best year since 2007.

February 11, 2011 Strong growth in 2010 was reported by North American-based robotics companies, which posted best year since 2007 according to statistics released by RIA. North American robot suppliers reported orders of 13,174 robots valued at $845.6 million from North American-based companies, increases of 39% in units and 49% in dollars. When orders from customers outside North America are included, totals are 15,860 robots valued at $993.2 million for gains of 52% in units and 58% in dollars.

February 10, 2011 JILA scientists eliminated collisions between atoms in atomic clock by packing atoms closer together. As described in Science Express, this discovery could enhance performance of experimental atomic clocks made of thousands or tens of thousands of neutral atoms trapped by intersecting laser beams. This idea, proposed by JILA theorist Ana Maria Rey and demonstrated in the lab by Ye's group, might make neutral atom-based clock accuracy compete with that of single ion based clocks.

February 10, 2011 NASA has partnered with Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), which will manage Sample Return Robot Challenge that will demonstrate how robot can locate and retrieve geologic samples from varied terrain without human control. Program seeks to encourage innovations in automatic navigation and robotic manipulator technologies. To take place in spring of 2012, competition will offer winning prize of $1.5 million, funded by NASA, while WPI will publish rules and register competitors.
