May 11, 2011 Frank Vargo, NAM Vice President for International Economic Affairs, released statement regarding Obama Administration's letter to Congress on the Colombia free trade agreement. According to Vargo, manufacturing continues to drive nation's recovery, and exports are playing a key role in this economic growth. Pending FTAs with Korea, Panama, and Colombia are critical to reaching President's goal of doubling exports by 2014 and creating manufacturing jobs.
SAE 2011 Conference draws more than 10,000 attendees.

May 10, 2011 SAE 2011 International World Congress with theme, Charging Forward Together, included 10,220 attendees from 48 countries, 87% of which were from North America. Three-day event featured 148 exhibiting companies at Innovators Only exhibition. Technical papers were highlighted at Chat with the Experts networking sessions, while 2011 Ride-n-Drive exhibit showcased 25 different vehicles. Keynote address at World Congress Annual Banquet was delivered by Daniel F. Akerson of General Motors.

Membership database has been replaced with more effective system that offers online registration for all AIA events and ability to update company information, track company activities, and decide which email communications members want to receive. May 9, 2011 After House of Representatives passed Restarting American Offshore Leasing Now Act (H.R. 1230), NAM Senior VP for Policy and Government Relations Aric Newhouse noted that this "bipartisan support for developing our domestic energy resources in the Outer Continental Shelf of the Gulf of Mexico and in Virginia is an important step to encourage manufacturing job growth and competitiveness." Newhouse also encouraged Senate to follow this approach toward energy policy.

Growth, new products, and technologies are also the focus of the 11,000 manufacturers expected to attend EASTEC 2011. During event, scheduled for May 17-19, Citizen Machinery America Inc. will showcase Citizen L20 X multi-axis Swiss Style Lathe and Miyano BNA42-DHY multi-axis turning center, and Mastercam will launch Mastercam Swiss Expert CAM software.
Manufacturing Jobs Show Gains despite 9% unemployment.

May 9, 2011 According to NAM Chief Economist Chad Moutray, Bureau of Labor Statistics' report on US unemployment is positive news for manufacturing. Report shows recovery continues to move in appropriate direction regarding employment, with 250,000 net new jobs created since December 2009. "However," tempered Moutray, "we are not seeing as large of employment gains as we would hope to at this point in the recovery." He attributes this mainly to uncertainties such as energy prices and regulation.

NTSB releases bus and truck safety forum video.

May 6, 2011 NTSB has released a short introductory video highlighting the issues that will be discussed during the public forum on bus and truck safety. Scheduled for May 10-11, forum will review progress that has been made in truck and bus safety in the last decade, and what needs to be done to improve it. It will focus on issues such as carrier oversight, truck and bus operations, driver safety and health, and vehicle safety technologies.

Remodeling and replacement of residential skylights experienced similar growth, while new construction segment of residential skylight market declined from 2009 to 2010. Residential door market showed increases in demand from 2009 to 2010, while demand for non-residential doors continued to decline in 2010.

NEMA endorses electric vehicle infrastructure bill.

May 6, 2011 NEMA, on behalf of its Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment/Systems product section, lent support to HR 1685, Electric Drive Vehicle Deployment Act of 2011. Introduced by Reps Judy Biggert, Edward J. Markey, Jerry McNerney, and Anna Eshoo, HR 1685 implements various incentives and programs to foster adoption of electric vehicles and EV infrastructure. HR 1685 extends tax credit through 2014 for purchase and installation of electric vehicle charging infrastructure and expands credit from 30% to 50%.

May 6, 2011 Developed by NEMA's Molded Case Circuit Breakers Product Group, ABP 2-2011 Recommendations on AFCI/Home Electrical Product Compatibility provides designers of home electrical products (HEPs) with information on operating parameters of arc-fault circuit interrupters, with goal of avoiding unwanted tripping of AFCI. ABP 2 offers guidance for designing HEPs operating at 120 Vac and rated at 20 A or less, and discusses ground-fault current, peak currents, and high frequency emissions.

May 6, 2011 U.S. EPA and U.S. Justice Department announced settlement with Rocky Mountain Pipeline System, LLC; Western Convenience Stores, Inc.; and Offen Petroleum, Inc. to resolve claims that they illegally mixed and distributed more than 1 million gal of gasoline that did not meet Clean Air Act emissions and fuel quality requirements. Companies listed above will pay $2.5 million civil penalty and conduct environmental project designed to offset harm caused by quality deviation.
