April 18, 2011 During IPC APEX EXPO(TM), IPC presented the Presidents Award as well as Special Recognition, Distinguished Committee Leadership, and Committee Service awards. The 2011 Presidents Award was presented to Stephen Pudles, API Defense USA, Inc. for his many contributions and leadership over the past 20 plus years. Awards were also presented to individuals who made significant contributions to IPC and the industry by lending their time and expertise through active IPC committee service.

April 15, 2011 Proposed standard ASTM WK25738, Test Method for Analysis of Titanium and Titanium Alloys by Spark-Atomic Emission/Glow Discharge-Atomic Emission Spectrometry, is being developed by Subcommittee E01.06. It will add to current titanium analysis techniques covered by ASTM methods, which currently do not cover spark-atomic emission or glow discharge atomic emission spectrometry. ASTM welcomes and encourages participation in development of its standards.

April 15, 2011 ASTM International Committee E57 on 3D Imaging Systems is developing new standards for 3D laser scanning, including ASTM E2807, Specification for 3D Imaging Data Exchange v1.0. As chairman of subcommittee E57.04, which is responsible for this standard, Gene V. Roe says ASTM E2807 will aid transition from 2D to 3D technology and allow hardware vendors to export their data in neutral, binary format that can be imported by design software.

EPA announces clean air settlement with Tennessee Valley Authority.

April 15, 2011 EPA announced settlement with Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to resolve alleged Clean Air Act violations at 11 of its coal-fired plants in Alabama, Kentucky, and Tennessee. Settlement will require TVA to invest estimated $3-5 billion on new and upgraded pollution controls, and invest $350 million on clean energy projects that will reduce pollution, save energy, and protect public health and environment. It also requires TVA to pay civil penalty of $10 million in total.

April 14, 2011 ASTM International test method ASTM F2508, Practice for Validation and Calibration of Walkway Tribometers Using Reference Surfaces, has been developed by Subcommittee F13.10 on Traction. It provides reference standard against which to validate and calibrate performance of tribometers, which assess potential of humans to slip while walking on various surfaces. Standard defines 4 reference surfaces, from very slippery to not slippery, that offer continuum of slip potential while walking.

April 14, 2011 U.S. EPA action plans address potential health risks of methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI), toluene diisocyanate (TDI), and related compounds. As exposure to said chemicals may occur when used in applications such as spray foam insulation, sealing concrete, or finishing floors, action include calling in data on past allegations of adverse effects, obtaining unpublished health and safety data from industry sources, and requiring exposure monitoring studies for consumer products.
NIST SRM Helps Improve Diagnosis of Huntington's Disease.

April 14, 2011 When used as quality control, Standard Reference Material (SRM) 2393, CAG Repeat Length Mutation in Huntington's Disease, helps clinical genetics labs diagnose Huntington's disease by improving measure of overall length of DNA molecule and cytosine-adenine-guanine (CAG) repeat count. SRM consists of 6 samples of DNA measured and certified by NIST for triplet repeats ranging in number from 15-75. Certified values, free of stutter, provide standard with which to compare patient DNA samples.

April 14, 2011 Web-based sprinkler use decisioning tool, developed by IT specialist Priya Lavappa and economist David Butry, supports baseline and sensitivity analyses that enable cost efficiency assessment of installing fire suppression sprinklers for particular jurisdiction, development, or dwelling. Users can input their own data to supply values for categories of costs and benefits in model or opt for combination of user-defined data and national/local statistics.

Costs are projected for transmission, substation, distribution, and customer interface over next 20 yr. EPRI estimate also factors in investment needed for growth and correcting deficienciesas well as deploying new technologies.
