EPA announces next step on air toxics standards.

May 17, 2011 U.S. EPA is seeking additional public feedback and gathering more information on the final standards that were issued in February 2011 for boilers and certain solid waste incinerators. As part of reconsideration process, EPA will issue a stay postponing effective date of standards for major source boilers and commercial and industrial solid waste incinerators to allow agency to continue to seek additional public comment before updated rule is proposed.

May 17, 2011 Beating out 99 teams from across USA, one team from Rockwall-Heath High School in Heath, TX took first place at ninth annual Team America Rocketry Challenge finals. Each 3- to 10-person team was challenged to design and build one rocket that lifted off to exactly 750 ft during 40-45 sec flight. Its raw egg payload had to return, undamaged, to ground via parachute. Contest encourages students to prepare for careers in aerospace industry.

May 17, 2011 The organizing committee for the SPE Automotive Composites Conference and Exhibition announced that it will again bestow two $2,000 USD scholarships for graduate-level research in polymer composites that has impact on ground transportation. Winning students will be required to report on the results of their findings during the 12th annual SPE ACCE, which takes place September 11-13, 2012. Scholarship application forms are due July 1, 2011.

May 16, 2011 AAMA Southeast Region Spring Meeting featured tour of the Institute for Business and Home Safety testing facility that simulates hurricane conditions. Representatives from IBHS offered information on the validation work that involves flow stimulation development and testing of a replica of the Texas Tech experimental building. IBHS conducts scientific research with goal of influencing residential and commercial structural design to reduce and prevent building damage due to natural disasters.
NIST Physicists demonstrate super-stable laser.

May 16, 2011 Physicists at NIST have designed and demonstrated a super-stable laser operating in a cramped, vibrating location - a minivan. Scientists evaluated infrared fiber laser's performance with vehicle stationary, with motor alternately off and idling, and with vehicle moving over uneven ground at speeds of less than 1 m/sec. Experiment shows how advanced lasers for atomic clocks can be made both stable and transportable enough for field use, such as geodesy and hydrology applications.

May 16, 2011 Physicist Jun Ye, a Fellow of both NIST and JILA, is known internationally for 3 areas of research involving interaction of matter and light. His experimental atomic clock based on strontium atoms is one of a number of candidate systems under development as potential next-generation time standard. Ye also contributes to development and application of optical frequency combs. Most recently, Ye and colleague Deborah Jin created new area of research on behavior and chemistry of ultracold modules.
SPE to Host pinfa's North American counterpart.

May 16, 2011 SPE and member companies of pinfa (Phosphorus, Inorganic and Nitrogen Flame Retardants Association) agreed that SPE will host pinfa in North America. Under terms disclosed, SPE will host North American counterpart to European-based pinfa at Cefic. SPE will provide services to help pinfa North America establish membership and activities in U.S., Canada, and Mexico as well as host its North American corporate office. pinfa North America is focused on information and technology exchange.

May 16, 2011 U.S. Department of Energy workshop that drew collection of 18 scientists to compare efficiency of plants and photovoltaic solar cells led to important scholarly article in Journal of Science, titled "Comparing Photosynthetic and Photovoltaic Efficiencies and Recognizing the Potential for Improvement." Article combines lessons learned from evolutionary photobiology and modern solar cells to make the case for a potentially huge boost in efficiency of solar production of biofuels.

BSA Annual Distributor Survey reveals strong market gains.

May 16, 2011 During BSA 45th Annual Convention, Carl James of BDI-Canada reported results of BSA 2011 Distributor Survey. In 2010, aggregate sales volume for participating distributors was $2,250,000,000, an increase of 17.2% over 2009 volume of $1,920,000,000. Estimates are that 2011 will continue this trend with gain of 7.8%. Also, in 2010, survey respondents reported the aggregate number of employees had grown to 17,000, an increase of 1.8% over 2009.

May 16, 2011 ISPE announced it will feature 7 educational sessions, including 2 focused on ICH quality standards, as part of its 2011 Washington Conference, which will take place June 6-9 in Washington, DC. Sessions will cover such topics as process validation, compliance assurance, and ICH Q11. In addition to educational content, conference will feature three training courses that address cross contamination risk management, 21 CFR Part 11 regulation compliance, and HVAC system fundamentals.

May 16, 2011 In light of WIRES (Working Group for Investment in Reliable and Economic Electric Systems) study, NEMA reiterated its call for policymakers to support development of US electric transmission infrastructure. Findings from said study indicate annual investment in new electric transmission facilities could reach 12-16 billion dollars in US. This would result in 30-40 billion dollars in annual economic activity and possibly create 150,000-200,000 new full-time jobs in each of next 20 years.

Developed by ASHRAE in conjunction with Illuminating Engineering Society of North America and U.S. Green Building Council, standard provides green building foundation for those who design, build, and operate green buildings. Addendums aim to appease requirements for heat reduction and subsequent energy use.

May 16, 2011 According to statement submitted before Senate Finance Committee hearing on Oil and Gas Tax Incentives and Rising Energy Prices, NAM is extremely concerned with proposals under consideration in Congress that would increase taxes for energy companies and discourage needed investment in energy infrastructure and supply. In particular, NAM strongly opposes proposal that would increase taxes on oil and gas companies by making them ineligible for Sec. 199 deduction for domestic manufacturing activity.

May 16, 2011 Subcommittee E34.55 on Occupational Safety and Health Performance Improvement will develop standards that will measure work-related injury and illness performance. Initial proposed standard, ASTM WK33270, Guide for Recording Occupational Injuries and Illnesses, will define work-related injuries and illnesses in a way that can be easily understood across countries, that are related to safety management systems, and that can be used to evaluate and compare safety programs.
