March 9, 2011 Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. (ABC) said March 4 employment report by U.S. Labor Department indicates 33,000 jobs were created in February. Construction unemployment rate stands at 21.8%, down from 22.5% in January and down from 27.1% same time last year. Nonresidential building construction sector lost jobs, while heavy and civil engineering construction gained employment. Overall, employment may pick up gradually through 2011, according to ABC Chief Economist Anirban Basu.

NIST Object-Oriented FEA Software analyzes stress on materials.

March 8, 2011 NIST has released Object-Oriented Finite element analysis (OOF) v2.1 which, when provided with microscopic image of composite material, analyzes effects of stress and other factors on alloys and ceramics or other materials with complex internal structure. Researchers can identify different substances that make up material and compute its response to stress or other effects. Software also includes templates for programmers to plug in details and formulas describing particular substance.

Motor Shipments edge higher to close out 2010.

March 4, 2011 Demand for motors edged higher during fourth quarter of 2010 as NEMA's Motors Shipments Index increased 1.4% from the previous quarter. Shipments remain appreciably lower than levels observed during 2006-2008 time period, but demand has trended higher over past 6 quarters, climbing nearly 14% since mid-2009. On year-over-year basis, shipments registered gain of 3.9% versus fourth quarter of 2009.

This will give students access to hands-on robotics curriculum in classroom in vein similar to that for math and science. Additional $75,000 will provide VEX kits for PLTW master teachers responsible for training of Project Lead The Way instructors.
