May 12, 2011 AMCA revised its publication 211-05, Certified Ratings Program - Product Rating Manual for Fan Air Performance to AMCA 211-05 (Rev.3/11). Revisions add requirements for certifying Fan Efficiency Grades, update check test tolerance for Power, and clarify how check test tolerance is calculated in the absence of catalogued free delivery airflow rate. New Fan Efficiency Grade program will support initiatives within many codes and standards that will encourage or require greater energy savings.

May 12, 2011 Released by ANSI, report on proposed revisions to China's Restrictions on Hazardous Substances (RoHS) outlines discussions held at February 23 event in Beijing that was hosted by ANSI Manufacturer Member Roundtable in China and U.S.-China Business Council (USCBC). Aforementioned event, which provided venue for open, cross-sector discussion of revisions, featured representatives of Chinese government agencies and groups involved with RoHS implementation.
NIST Publication assists manufacturers writing BIOS code.

May 12, 2011 NIST Special Publication 800-147 provides guidelines for building features into BIOS that help protect it from being modified or corrupted by attackers. Manufacturers routinely update system firmware to fix bugs, patch vulnerabilities, and support new hardware. SP 800-147 calls for using cryptographic "digital signatures" to authenticate BIOS updates before installation. Publication also suggests management best practices that are tightly coupled with security guidelines for manufacturers.

May 12, 2011 Report released by NIST summarizes technology transfer activities and achievements of scientific research agencies across federal government. Statistical data provided indicates that, from 2005 to 2009, collaborations at federal labs using Cooperative Research and Development Agreements show slightly upward trend, along with new patent applications and issued patents. Federal laboratories also transfer many technologies through other mechanisms not listed in this report.
Statement by NAM VP says offshore drilling helps create jobs.

May 12, 2011 Aric Newhouse, NAM Senior VP for Policy and Government Relations, issued statement as House of Representatives began to consider H.R. 1231, Reversing President Obama's Offshore Moratorium Act. "Manufacturers have suffered from this moratorium," said Newhouse, "because they make and supply the equipment, services, engines, boats and materials...used by offshore drilling rigs." Newhouse also said getting rigs back up and running will restore jobs and promote nation's economic recovery.

May 11, 2011 According to May 6 employment report by Labor Department, construction industry added 5,000 jobs in April. Overall numbers indicate that the nation added 244,000 jobs in April, as private sector gained 268,000 jobs and government lost 24,000 jobs. Year-over-year, nation added 1,313,000 jobs. Possible reasons for the "ongoing underperformance," according to ABC Chief Economist Anirban Basu, include "disciplined lending standards, high vacancy rates, and skittishness among investors."

Although small, correction could represent a major step towards atomic timekeepers' longstanding goal of a clock with a precision equivalent to 1 second of error every 32 billion years.

With a year-to-date total of $1,203.57 million, 2011 is up 118.6% compared with 2010. These numbers and all data in this report are based on the totals of actual data reported by companies participating in the United States Manufacturing Technology Consumption program.

Under these voluntary programs, consumers can choose to support additional electricity production from renewable resources such as wind and solar. Ranked by renewable energy sales, Austin Energy sold largest amount of renewable energy in nation through voluntary green power program. Ranked by percentage of customer participation, top utility is City of Palo Alto Utilities, with more than 20% of customers participating.

May 11, 2011 Announcements regarding U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) decision to not release results of 2007 Commercial Buildings Energy Consumption Survey (CBECS) and halt work on 2011 edition of said survey have prompted ASHRAE to request action. In a letter to Congress, ASHRAE urged inclusion of funding for CBECS in Fiscal Year 2012 appropriations bills so that work on 2011 edition of CBECS may continue. Currently, latest version of CBECS data is from 2003.
