SME reports rise in attendance at ANTEC® 2011 over 2010.

May 18, 2011 SME ANTEC® 2011 from May 1-5 had total attendance of 2,023, which was 31% higher than 2010. Participants from 42 countries attended. The annual technical conference included 108 topical sessions with more than 700 presentations as well as trade show with 84 exhibitors. "The overall success of ANTEC 2011 reflected the gathering strength of the economy worldwide and continuing demand for the quality technical information that ANTEC provides," said Lesley Kyle of SPE.

Section on Open Issues covers computing performance, reliability, economics, compliance, and data and applications security. Guide also includes general recommendations section, as well as appendices covering costs of cloud computing, roles and responsibilities, acronyms, and terminology.

May 18, 2011 SPE has announced that Kai Syrjälä, PhD of Finland-based Nokia will be a plenary speaker at the first SPE EUROTEC(TM) plastics technical conference. His presentation, titled "Plastics Injection Molding and Tool Making: Challenges in China and Future Visions," will be delivered on Nov 14, 2011. It will illustrate current working models and practices in tool and mold manufacturing in China, focusing on how to succeed, maintain progress, and manage quality.

May 18, 2011 ASTM Committee B02 on Nonferrous Metals and Alloys presented ASTM Award of Merit to Bernard L. Potts, president and owner of Village Castings Inc. Committee sited Potts for his expert technical contributions to international standards on zinc and its alloys and his leadership in developing and revising standards for Subcommittee B02.04 on Zinc and Cadmium. A member of B02 and ASTM since 1992, Potts serves as B02 recording secretary and is chairman of Subcommittee B02.94 on Long Range Planning.

May 18, 2011 In an effort to identify and communicate cross-sector solutions to this global challenge, ANSI has published a free report, "Best Practices in the Fight against Global Counterfeiting: An Action Guide to Strengthen Cooperation and Collaboration across Industry Sectors and among Global Supply Chains." Recommendations range from standardization of supply chain procedures and strengthening compliance, to support for law enforcement, increased education, and greater public-private collaboration.

ISO and ITU form joint task force.

May 18, 2011 International Organization for Standardization and International Telecommunication Union have announced a new joint standards initiative on Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) to hasten the deployment of ITS products and services. Under partnership, ISO and ITU will form a Joint Task Force for ITS Communications to pool resources within ITU and ISO, link existing work and avoid duplication, and foster better collaboration between overlapping industry sectors.

May 17, 2011 Scientists at Hollings Marine Laboratory found that bottlenose dolphins and beluga whales accumulate more chemical pollutants in their bodies when they live and feed in waters near urbanized areas. Papers published in online journal, Environmental Science and Technology, looked at persistent organic pollutant levels in male dolphins along U.S. East and Gulf of Mexico coasts and Bermuda as well as perfluorinated compound (PFC) levels in beluga whales at 2 Alaskan locations.
Research finds evidence of natural synthesis of silver nanoparticles.

May 17, 2011 Researchers from Florida Institute of Technology, State University of New York, Buffalo, and NIST report that, given source of silver ions, naturally occurring humic acid will synthesize stable silver nanoparticles. During experiments, team found acids from river water or sediments would form detectable silver nanoparticles at room temperature in 2-4 days. Also, humic acid stabilized nanoparticles by coating them and prevented their clumping into larger mass of silver.

May 17, 2011 NEMA has published ANSI C136.40-2011 American National Standard for Roadway and Area Lighting Equipment-Solar Lighting Systems. Produced by ANSI Committee 136 for Roadway and Area Lighting, standard defines requirements for specification and installation of DC solar-powered lighting systems. It also covers topics such as light source requirements, batteries, internal labeling, and power controls. Standard joins more than 30 other standards covering roadway and area lighting topics.

Construction Materials Prices rise 1.4% in April.

May 17, 2011 In what appears to be an ongoing trend, cost of construction materials prices increased by 1.4% in April, according to May 12 Department of Labor's Producer Price Index report. Prices are now 7.1% higher from the same time last year. According to ABC Chief Economist Anirban Basu, the growth in materials prices has been outstripping the improvement in construction activity, which implies further downward pressure on industry profit margins.

May 17, 2011 Vehicle Technologies Program at Department of Energy (DoE) supported NREL's development and fabrication of Large-Volume Battery Calorimeter (LVBC) for advancing battery technologies of electric vehicles. LVBC measures heat generated by batteries for electric-drive vehicles, analyzes temperature's effects on systems, and helps pinpoint ways to manage battery temperatures for optimal performance and maximum life. System is large enough to test entire battery systems.
