ASABE to revise rear-mounted PTO standard.

July 7, 2011 ASABE has initiated a project to revise one of its standards for rear-mounted power take-off on agricultural tractors. ANSI/ASABE AD500-1:2004 W/Cor. 1 DEC2010 is an adoption, with deviations, of international standard ISO 500-1:2004, and was approved as ASABE standard in Dec 2010. An error was found in the Forward section, in which deviations from ISO document are listed. PTO output speed of 1000r/min shaft was incorrectly stated as 100r/min shaft.
IPC releases PCB industry results for May 2011.

July 7, 2011 According to North American PCB Statistical Program, rigid PCB shipments were flat at 0% growth and bookings decreased 13.4% in May 2011 from May 2010. Compared to previous month, rigid PCB shipments increased 0.3% and rigid bookings decreased 0.6%. Flexible circuit shipments in May 2011 were up 14.0% and bookings decreased 5.1% compared to May 2010. When compared to April, flexible circuit shipments decreased 6.9% and flex bookings jumped 22.0%. Combined book-to-bill ratio climbed to 0.99.
ASTM Package Test Standard addresses hazardous materials.

July 6, 2011 Interested parties are invited to participate in development of proposed standard ASTM WK32937, Guide for Determining Acceptable Nonhazardous Filling Substances for Packagings Subjected to the United Nations Performances Tests. Developed for purposes of design qualification and periodic testing of UN specification packaging, standard will facilitate consistent test methods and more reproducible results in hazardous materials package testing.

July 6, 2011 Once approved, proposed standard ASTM WK32076 will provide Insulating Concrete Form contractors with basic requirements to ensure that products are installed properly so that the end result is a structurally sound concrete wall assembly. For measuring floor flatness and pavement smoothness, proposed standard ASTM WK32398 will combine traditional manual straightedge approach with more recent data collection techniques such as F-numbers and the Waviness Index.
ANSI Report summarizes "Standards Wars" workshop.

July 6, 2011 ANSI has released a report summarizing the range of perspectives voiced at the May 12 ANSI workshop, Standards Wars: Myth or Reality?, which brought together more than 200 attendees and over 70 more via teleconference to examine implications of conflict and duplication in the standards world. Report affirms that while conflict and duplication are deserving of continual review, U.S. voluntary consensus standardization system remains strong, effective, and responsive to nation's needs.

SmartWay Drayage Program aims to clean up air around port cities.

July 6, 2011 Coalition for Responsible Transportation, Environmental Defense Fund, and U.S. EPA launched EPA SmartWay Drayage Program, a goods movement initiative to clean up the air in and around ports. Through program, port trucking companies and independent owner-operators sign partnership agreement and commit to track diesel emissions, replace older dirtier trucks with newer cleaner ones, and achieve at least 50% reduction in particulate matter and 25% reduction in NOx.
Optical Tools produce ultra-low-noise microwave signals.

July 6, 2011 By combining laser technologies, NIST physicists generated microwave signals more pure and stable than those from conventional electronic sources. Apparatus consists of new application of optical frequency combs, tools based on ultrafast lasers for precisely measuring optical frequencies (colors) of light, and could improve signal stability and resolution in radar, communications and navigation systems, as well as atomic clocks.

July 5, 2011 Providing training at intermediate level of rope rescue, ASTM WK33839, once approved, will give rescue teams skills needed to support rope rescue operation in terrain with high exposure and hazard potential, including high angle environments. Those trained to ASTM WK33840 standard, once it's approved, will have skills to support rope rescue operations in difficult terrain, and will also have adequate field skills and knowledge to make critical decisions and to direct the operation.
ASTM Paint Committee Develops standard for water beading.

July 5, 2011 Currently in development, ASTM WK32143, Test Method for Visual Assessment of Water Beading on Horizontal Coatings, will provide formulators with practical means for evaluating water beading capability of coatings. Repeating test described in ASTM WK32143 after coated specimens have been put through intervals of aging or weathering will demonstrate persistence of coating's ability to bead water. Coating formulators will be primary users this standard.

July 5, 2011 Revised and re-published, AAMA 920-11 establishes a standard test method and set of performance criteria for side-hinged exterior door systems and their associated hardware under accelerated operating conditions. Specification will provide an indication of the effects that cycling will have on the door and hardware connections, as well as minimum performance criteria for door systems in order to achieve specified performance class and grade.
John Cahn Receives Kyoto Prize for work in materials science.

July 1, 2011 John Cahn, emeritus senior fellow and materials scientist at U.S. Commerce Department's NIST, was awarded the Kyoto Prize in Advanced Technology. His contributions to materials science include developing fundamental theory that describes behavior of mixtures of different materials and how they tend to separate at microscale. This theory established entire branch of materials research and is particularly important to rational design of new alloys.
