ANSI Workshop to cover small business disaster preparedness.

May 4, 2011 ANSI Homeland Security Standards Panel will host "Achieving Preparedness through Standards Implementation: Challenges and Opportunities for Small Businesses" workshop on May 25. Workshop will identify ways to accommodate needs of small businesses with regard to preparedness standards and conformity assessment. It provides opportunity for homeland security, emergency preparedness, business continuity communities, and other stakeholders to discuss current challenges, recent successes, and future outlooks.
NIST's Fire Research Laboratory expands testing facility.

May 3, 2011 NIST's National Fire Research Laboratory is adding 21,400 sq ft of space to Large Fire Laboratory, which will accommodate structural systems and components up to 26 ft high for simulating fires. Accommodating fires up to 20 MW heat release rate, facility will include test area with 60 x 90 ft floor as well as 45 x 50 ft hood to remove smoke and hot gases and collect data. Added capabilities may lead to standards for fire-resistant structural designs and innovations in building construction.
I Make America launches Picture a Better America photo contest.

May 3, 2011 AEM and the I Make America campaign launched the Picture a Better America Photo Contest to demonstrate the urgent need to invest in America's crumbling infrastructure. Contest aims to amplify voices of I Make America's grassroots supporters and others committed to demonstrating the real cost of Congressional inaction on infrastructure investment and who are pushing for passage of fully funded 6-year highway bill by September 30th of this year.
ASABE revises agricultural-implement jacks standard.

May 3, 2011 ASABE has revised ASAE S485.3, Implement Mounted Screw-Type Jacks, to correct values for rated static side torque and to add requirement that vertical and side load ratings be printed on jack label. It also includes changes anticipated in ISO 12140:1998, Agricultural machinery - Agricultural Trailers and Trailed Equipment - Drawbar Jacks, which are expected to be completed by 2013. Following this release, ASABE will consider adopting it as American National Standard to replace S485.

May 3, 2011 US EPA's Energy StarŪ program launched 2011 National Building Competition: Battle of the Buildings, in which teams from 245 buildings around country will go head-to-head to improve energy efficiency and determine who can reduce their energy use most. Competition includes 26 types of commercial buildings, some of which are 100+ years old. Competitors will be able to exchange ideas and strategies through various social media applications.
NREL earns federal technology transfer accolades.

May 3, 2011 A technology from NREL for depositing crystalline silicon onto inexpensive substrate materials has been recognized with 2011 Award for Excellence in Technology Transfer from Federal Laboratory Consortium. "Flexible Thin-Film Crystalline-Silicon Photovoltaics on RABiTS" project was developed in conjunction with DOE's Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Devised at ORNL, Rolling Assisted Biaxially Textured Substrate provides flexible metal foil platform for high-temperature superconducting materials.
Air Toxics Emissions Standards apply to secondary lead smelters.

May 3, 2011 U.S. EPA is proposing stronger air toxics standards for secondary lead smelters in order to improve air quality and protect people's health. Proposed standards would cut lead and arsenic emissions and would also require facilities to control emissions of dioxins. Results from implementation of this new proposal estimate a 63% reduction in lead and arsenic emissions. Also, these reductions will help areas meet new, more protective air quality standards for lead that agency issued in 2008.

Manufacturers are pleased with Treasury's announced proposal to exempt foreign exchange swaps and forwards from the definition of a "swap" under Commodity Exchange Act, as amended by Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act.

May 3, 2011 NIST researchers analyzed different methods for collecting, extracting, and quantifying microbial spores from indoor surfaces, to find ways to evaluate cleanup efforts after contamination or bioterrorist attack. Findings indicate use of polyester-rayon wipes for collection, use of surfactant to clean wipes and keep bacteria from sticking to container, and rapid spinning to clean containers were most efficient. Study results will be used to develop ASTM protocol for bacterial surface sampling.

May 2, 2011 Offering mathematical and physical description of how temperature affects flow rate, researchers used computer simulations to gain basic insights into material science issues related to glass-forming materials. Increasingly viscous nature of glass-forming liquids is related to molecules that move together in long strings around other atoms almost frozen in motion. Rate at which snake-like strings grow in size as material cools is quantitatively related mathematically to fluid fragility.

Plan calls for establishment of Identity Ecosystem in which consumers obtain trusted IDs from one or more private or public credential providers. Set of standards for privacy protection and interoperability of on-line credentials, based on cryptography and techniques such as multi-factor authentication, would be created.
