AIA applauds common sense export control reforms.

July 20, 2011 AIA welcomes administration's proposed rule to relieve low-risk technology exports of burdensome and unnecessary restrictions. Rule proposes that after appropriate interagency review and consensus, technologies with low or no military or intelligence sensitivity will be moved off of U.S. Munitions List to Commerce Control List. Exports of these technologies to key military allies and partners may be eligible for more flexible Commerce license exemptions.
Energy Star Requirements updated for dishwashers and furnaces.

July 20, 2011 Effective Jan 20, 2012, residential dishwashers meeting new Energy Star requirements will be 10-30% more energy efficient than conventional models and about 8% more efficient than dishwashers that met previous Energy Star requirement. Furnaces that meet new requirements for southern half of U.S. will be up to 12% more energy efficient than baseline units, while qualified furnaces in northern half of U.S. including Canada will be up to 16% more energy efficient than baseline models.

Seto of Belcan Engineering Corp. has been honored with ASTM International Award of Merit and title of fellow for his outstanding contributions to Committee D02 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants and for his work as chairman of Subcommittee D02.J0 on Aviation Fuels. He has been a major contributor to important D02 standards for aviation turbine fuels and fuel additives, including revision to ASTM D7566, Specification for Aviation Turbine Fuel Containing Synthesized Hydrocarbons.

July 18, 2011 ASTM D7615/D7615M, Practice for Open-Hole Fatigue Response of Polymer Matrix Composite Laminates, provides guidance for development of open-hole fatigue data for material specifications, R/D, material design allowables, and quality assurance. Standard is useful for developing design factors from relatively small standard coupons to account for effects of environmental conditions and data scatter that can then be applied to test programs involving larger scale test articles.

AAMA continues urging legislative leaders to review $1.5 billion LRRP and amendment rules, and to contemplate impact of rules on nation's employment rate, energy conservation, and economic recovery, as well as safety and health of vulnerable residents.

Taken by Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) photographer Julie Duewel, Balancing Act captures NDOT Bridge Inspector Aleksander Nelson performing safety inspection at Mike O'Callaghan/Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge. Lloyd Brown, AASHTO director of communications, noted that "These photographs offer a reminder of the important role transportation plays in American life."

July 18, 2011 In Q1 of 2011, NEMA compact fluorescent (CFL) lamps index declined for fourth consecutive quarter. Registered reading of 180.8 marks decline of 16.8% on year-over-year basis. Incandescent lamp shipments showed increase of 6.4% over previous quarter, and first quarter reading of 57.0 remained unchanged from same period of previous year. Incandescent lamps remained dominant, while CFLs gave back market share gained over last 3 years by decreasing to 21.0%.
Study of E-AB Aircraft Safety seeks pilot, builder input.

July 18, 2011 NTSB study of accidents involving Experimental Amateur-Built (E-AB) aircraft will evaluate safety of this growing segment of general aviation. In support of this project, Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) will host Web-based survey for E-AB aircraft owners. Study will examine areas such as builder assistance programs; transition training; flight test and certification requirements; maintenance; as well as performance and failures of systems, structures, and power plants.

ASABE adopts international standard on safety signs.

July 18, 2011 ASABE has adopted with deviations international standard ISO 11684. ASABE document, ANSI/ASABE AD11684:1995 (APR2011), Tractors, machinery for agricultural and forestry, powered lawn and garden equipment - Safety signs and hazard pictorials - General principles, replaces ASAE S441.3, Safety Signs, which was used as basis for ISO 11684. Adoption further harmonizes national and international standardization, while deviation recognizes areas in which US practice differs from those described by ISO.

July 15, 2011 As announced by NIST, manufacturing industry executive Michael F. Molnar will serve as agency's Chief Manufacturing Officer. As Chief Manufacturing Officer, Molnar will be responsible for planning and coordination of NIST's manufacturing research and services programs. He will also serve as NIST's central point of contact with White House, Department of Commerce, and other agencies on technical and policy issues related to manufacturing.

A member of ASTM and Committee F04 since 1988, Zardiackas is the author of 5 books, more than 120 research abstracts, and more than 50 refereed scientific articles.

July 15, 2011 Commenting on May international trade data, NAM VP for International Economic Affairs Frank Vargo stated that this one-month change in exports and imports is in line with basic trends visible since start of 2009. June data, he said, will be important in determining whether shift has occurred. With manufactured goods imports outpacing export growth all year and deficit tending to increase, manufactured goods exports need to accelerate or deficit could slip into record territory by next year.

Integrated Rapid Visual Screening (IRVS) tools help obtain preliminary risk assessment rating for buildings and infrastructure. Arlington also asked DHS to include it in development of Washington, DC Urban Blast Tool (UBT).
