ANSI Signs MoU to spur greater US-Russian cooperation,.

May 23, 2011 In support of US-Russian standardization activities cooperation, ANSI and Russian Federation's Federal Agency on Technical Regulating and Metrology (GOST-R) came together last week to sign Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). It seeks to establish future areas of cooperation between organizations regarding collaborative programs, training, and bilateral visits. Under MoU, ANSI and GOST-R will work to develop mutually supportive positions related to standards and conformity assessment.

May 23, 2011 ASHRAE commends Senators Shaheen and Portman for introducing the Energy Savings and Industrial Competitiveness Act of 2011, which would help make buildings more energy efficient by reducing barriers in residential, commercial, and industrial sectors to make use of new technologies. Legislation would also encourage U.S. DOE to work with code and standard development organizations to develop definitions of energy use intensity for use in model codes or in evaluating efficiency impacts of codes.

Barger, technical center director at Ash Grove Cement Co., received Award of Merit from ASTM International Committees C01 on Cement and C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates. Award was presented for exceptional leadership and technical contributions related to standards on compositional analysis, use, and testing of hydraulic cements and hydraulic cement concretes. A member of ASTM since 1988, Barger was recognized as ASTM Honorary Member of Committees C01 and C09 in 2009.
Worker Safety Excellence Awards were presented by AIA.

Each award recognizes a company that demonstrated key elements of corporate safety program and achieved lowest injury/illness rates.

May 20, 2011 MPIF announced winners of its 2011 Design Excellence awards, which included grand prizes in automotive transmission category, for carrier and one-way rocker clutch assembly, as well as automotive chassis category to GKN Sinter Metals, LLC. Grand prizes were also awarded to Capstan California for porous bronze filter, Parmatech Corporation for 420 stainless steel hunting arrowhead, and FloMet LLC in medical/dental category. Several awards of distinction were also presented at PowderMet2011.

Manufacturing Economist says China to lose edge over US by 2016.

May 20, 2011 Based on recent analyses and reports, leading manufacturing sector economist Dr. Chris Kuehl asserts that the Chinese will lose significant market share in coming years and not have cost advantage over US manufacturing by year 2016. "There are no guarantees," said Kuehl, "and these reports make it clear that idiotic policies can still ruin the trend." Kuehl points out that in 1990 the Chinese share of world manufacturing output was 3%. Today, its share is 19.8%, and US is 19.4%.

ASHRAE, IES Seek Public Input on residential energy standard.

May 20, 2011 Last year, ASHRAE and IES collaborated to increase efficiency of requirements in ANSI/ASHRAE/IES (Illuminating Engineering Society of North America) Standard 90.2, Energy Efficient Design of Low-Rise Residential Buildings. Now, both organizations are seeking input into draft of said standard. It is open for advisory public review May 13 until June 12, 2011. The goal of ASHRAE and IES is to publish standard that is 30% more energy efficient than 2004 version of 90.1.

NIST Seeks Public Comment on draft guide to cloud computing.

May 19, 2011 To clarify definitions of cloud computing, NIST Cloud Computing Synopsis and Recommendations (Special Publication 800-146) reviews NIST-established definition of cloud computing and describes its current benefits and issues. It also provides recommendations on how organizations should consider opportunities and risks of cloud computing and identifies areas for future analysis. NIST is accepting public comments on draft through June 13, 2011.

This optimizes device interoperability and integration and includes updates to FOUNDATION fieldbus Cable Specification. Test procedure for isolated couplers is included with FOUNDATION fieldbus Coupler Test Specification, and update also adds receive jitter test case and device-coupler interoperability test to H1 Physical Layer Conformance Test Specification.

NIST Gas Sensor uses terahertz frequencies to detect trace gases.

May 18, 2011 NIST sensor emits waves at terahertz frequencies that make gas molecules rotate at rates unique to each type of gas. Waves can be used to identify specific gases and measure how much gas is present. Plugging into power outlet, portable unit also has mathematical analysis tools for determining gas type. "This new sensor can simultaneously detect many different trace gases at very fast rates and with high sensitivity," says NIST chemist Kevin Douglass.
