ELFA releases Monthly Leasing and Finance Index for April.

May 26, 2011 According to ELFA's Monthly Leasing and Finance Index, overall new business volume for April was $5.1 billion, up 11% compared to same period in 2010. Compared against March volume, April volume decreased 18%. Receivables over 30 days decreased to 3.3% in April from 3.5% in March, and declined by 9% compared to same period in 2010. Charge-offs also decreased, from 1.3 % in March to 0.8 % in April. New credit application approvals increased slightly to 76% in April from revised 75% in March.

May 26, 2011 U.S. DoT and U.S. EPA unveiled new fuel economy labels designed to help consumers take advantage of increased efficiency standards. These labels will provide comprehensive fuel efficiency information, including estimated annual fuel costs and savings as well as information on each vehicle's environmental impact. Starting with model year 2013, improved fuel economy labels will be required to be affixed to all new passenger cars and trucks.
Building Institute Council addresses finance, insurance, and real estate.

May 25, 2011 Through ASHRAE's Grants-In-Aids Award Program, Simge Andolsun, a student at Texas A&M University, plans to model a new HVAC/R energy saving strategy with partial conditioning or reuse of air. Partial conditioning is based on using remaining energy of air returning from occupied zones in unoccupied zones before it returns to system or is exhausted from system. Strategy is expected to provide reduction in overall HVAC/R energy consumption for low-income households in hot and humid climates.

May 25, 2011 To support development of new technologies for protecting environment and public health, U.S. EPA is awarding nearly $2.25 million to 10 small companies in CA, CO, FL, MA, MI, and NM. Projects include reducing toxic chemicals from landfills, producing environmentally friendly adhesive, reducing methane emissions by converting dilute methane waste gas streams into useful fuel, and designing real-time environmental water monitoring sensor.

The general view was that while conflict and duplication in standards development are deserving of continual vigilance, the U.S. voluntary consensus standardization system is strong, effective, and responsive to country's needs.

Joining 17 other COPANT members in attendance, ANSI vice president Gary W. Kushnier led 21-member U.S. delegation representing public and private sector standardization organizations. ANSI president and CEO S. Joe Bhatia was elected to his second 2-year term as COPANT VP, and ANSI was elected to COPANT Board of Directors.
NIST Study explores nanowire-based memory.

May 24, 2011 In study titled "Fabrication, Characterization, and Simulation of High Performance Si Nanowire-Based Non-Volatile Memory Cells," NIST and George Mason University researchers explored how to optimize nanowire-based charge-trapping memory devices. Team used software modeling and electrical device characterization to examine structures for dielectrics that surround memory and store electrical charges. Based on 20 nm dia silicone wires, nanowires form memory that holds contents even if power is off.
NIST Workshop to address soft material manufacturing research.

Work potentially could aid a broad range of industries from plastics to pharmaceuticals.
