July 29, 2011 Funded by SME Education Foundation, Shop Rat Foundation 2011 Summer Camp introduced 29 kids, ranging from 6th to 10th grade, to world of manufacturing. Kids learned engineering basics and how to use variety of tools to make things. In addition to basics of hydraulics, aerodynamics, and power tools, they learned to read blueprints, use a mill and lathe, and build and race robotic vehicles. These experiences will encourage students to seek out further education in Skilled Trades industry.

July 29, 2011 AEM released a revenue-neutral solution to rebuild and modernize America's interstates without raising the gas tax. Proposal, advanced by AEM in effort to reinvigorate stalled debate on infrastructure investment financing, was developed by Jack Schenendorf and Elizabeth Bell. As deadline looms to reauthorize U.S. surface transportation policy, Schenendorf unveiled alternative solutions to supplement federal transportation revenues: Federal Interstate User Fee and Federal Motor Carrier User Fee.

July 29, 2011 European Powder Metallurgy Association (EPMA) ran its 11th PM Summer School at Fraunhofer Institut IFAM in Dresden during last week in June. Conforming to trend of past few years, demand outweighed capacity; 120 applications were placed for 54 available positions. Participants from 14 countries throughout Europe reflected range of organizations, including PM end users. Students had opportunity to listen to, discuss, and solve problems with some 20 experts from industry and academia.
Economic Slowdown continues to affect electrical manufacturing.

July 29, 2011 According to NEMA's Electroindustry Business Confidence Survey, 44% of respondents reported that the economic environment facing the industry in North America deteriorated in most recent month, up from 36% in June. Only 8% reported conditions were better than a month ago in July, down from 27% in June. Electroindustry Business Confidence Index thus dropped to 32 from 45.5 a month ago, remaining below the growth threshold of 50 points for second straight month.

July 29, 2011 Representatives from NEMA led meeting to discuss standards harmonization requirements for electric vehicle supply equipment systems in North America. During meeting, representatives from UL, CSA, ANCE, and various stakeholders decided to organize 3 ad-hoc work groups of technical experts to review and harmonize requirements of UL and CSA documents by end of August 2011. SDOs will expedite approval of drafts so by end of 2011, harmonized documents will be available for certification purposes.
NAM Says Keystone XL Pipeline Critical for reliable energy, jobs.

July 29, 2011 Aric Newhouse, NAM Senior VP for Policy and Government Relations, issued statement in support of H.R. 1938, North American-Made Energy Security Act. According to Newhouse, "Completion of the Keystone XL pipeline from Canada will provide manufacturers with a stable North American energy source...and create an estimated 130,000 new jobs." Newhouse went on to say how "Reliable, accessible, and affordable energy is critical for manufacturers to compete in today's global marketplace."

July 29, 2011 NAM President and CEO Jay Timmons released statement urging House of Representatives to pass the Protecting Jobs from Government Interference Act. In recent NAM poll of 8,700 manufacturers, 69% said that NLRB's actions will negatively affect their ability to create jobs. Manufacturers and their employees can't afford more job-killing proposals from the NLRB. Congress must tie the hands of Administration's NLRB to prevent it from continuing to cause harm to America's job creators.

Directional E-Field sensor accelerates process of safely finding inadvertently energized objects and surfaces. While antenna identifies charge from any electric field, LED indicators light up when approaching its source.

This marks largest market share of any field communications protocol, larger than all other fieldbus devices, proprietary protocols, and 4-20mA combined. Also, ARC study estimates number of installed HART devices will grow to 35 million in 2011 and projects growth to continue to 37.3 million in 2012.

July 28, 2011 Proposed standard ASTM WK32621, Practice for Evaluating Potential Hazard Due to Methane in the Vadose Zone, will enable users to determine whether or not real estate site has methane hazard that needs to be mitigated. Once approved, standard will be used by regulators, developers, sellers, buyers, occupants, management companies, lenders, consultants, contractors, and manufacturers. All interested parties are invited to participate in the development of ASTM WK32621.

July 28, 2011 Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) mission reached milestone when it successfully completed its Mission Critical Design Review (CDR). Scheduled for launch in late 2013, MAVEN will be first mission devoted to understanding Martian upper atmosphere. Its goal is to determine history of loss of atmospheric gases to space through time, providing answers about Mars climate evolution. From July 11-15, 2011, MAVEN Critical Design Review was held at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.

ELFA releases June's survey of economic activity.

July 28, 2011 According to ELFA's Monthly Leasing and Finance Index, economic activity showed overall new business volume for June was $7.3 billion, up 33% from $5.5 billion in 2010. Compared with May volume, June volume increased by 30%. Receivables over 30 days decreased 14% to 2.5% in June from 2.9% in May, and declined by 24% compared to same period in 2010. Charge-offs increased 38% in June from previous month, and decreased by 35% from same period in 2010.

July 28, 2011 Following BPA Action Plan announced in March 2010, US EPA is requesting public comment on possible toxicity testing and environmental sampling in order to study BPA's potential environmental impacts. This action is part of effort to strengthen EPA chemical management program and ensure safety of chemicals encountered daily by Americans. When research concludes, EPA will determine if additional actions may be needed to address human health concerns from non-food use exposures.
NREL and Verizon to explore energy-saving technologies.

July 28, 2011 NREL and Verizon signed memorandum of understanding that could lead to development of new ways to reduce energy use in the information and communications technology industry. Under MOU, NREL and Verizon will share expertise and resources in areas such as energy efficiency and energy management at Verizon's buildings, facilities, and data centers, as well as advancement of Smart Grid technologies and best practices, including energy and communication technologies in homes and buildings.
