NIST Awards $2.7 Million to small business research projects.

August 18, 2011 With goal of helping develop technologies that could lead to commercial and public benefit, NIST announced nearly $2.7 million in Phase 1 and Phase 2 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) awards to 18 U.S. small businesses. Winning projects include research platform for developing microscopic robots less than 1 mm in size, environmental chamber for testing weathering of materials, and system for broadcasting time-of-day signals.
NIST Tests help ensure wireless alarm beacon reliability.

August 18, 2011 Tests at NIST are helping to ensure alarm beacons for firefighters and other emergency responders operate reliably in presence of other wireless devices. Latest NIST study, focused on interference between Personal Alert Safety Systems (PASS) with wireless alarm capability and RFID systems, developed methods for testing interference in wireless devices such as radios, hands-free cell phone headsets, LANs, and urban search and rescue robots.
SME announces 2011 Design for Digital Manufacturing winners.

August 18, 2011 For 2011 Design for Digital Manufacturing Competition contestants had to design a product intended to be, or be part of, a system that utilizes direct digital manufacturing. First place winners were U.Mass-Lowell students Adam McLaughlin, Jordan Tye, Lisabet Sizer, and Mark Damplo for their "Custom Forearm Crutch Handgrip with Integrated iPod Controller and Flashlight." Students from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville came in 2nd place for their design of an adjustable blade ceiling fan.

August 18, 2011 Under recent rulings issued by U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), commercial and high-rise residential buildings, including federal buildings, must meet requirements in ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1-2007. States are required to certify by July 20, 2013 that they have reviewed and updated provisions of their commercial building code regarding energy efficiency. DOE also requires new federal buildings, with construction beginning on/after October 11, 2012, to meet requirements of 90.1-2007.

August 18, 2011 Advanced biofuels represent the best option for meeting the needs of the military and civilian markets. BIO thanked Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, Energy Secretary Steven Chu, and Navy Secretary Ray Mabus and applauded Obama administration's announced initiative to invest up to $510 million to construct or retrofit facilities to produce drop-in advanced biofuels. These biofuels can be an important 'force multiplier' by increasing military's ability to operate where needed.

August 17, 2011 PTDA Business Index indicated 2Q2011 was fifth consecutive quarter for business growth among PTDA members. With reading of 70.2, recently released second quarter results indicate power transmission/motion control industry is expanding but at lowest rate since index's inception one year ago. Participating PTDA members have lowered their full year outlook for 2011. On average, members are forecasting 12% growth, which is down from 1Q outlook calling for 14% growth.

CRP provides the buyer, user, and specifier assurance that the manufacturer's published performance ratings of air system components are reliable and accurate. Revision includes definition for "public" in section 5.1. When used with the availability of a product line catalog, public shall mean users and specifiers only.

EPA affirms national air quality standards for carbon monoxide.

August 16, 2011 After careful review of the science, U.S. EPA is affirming current national air quality standards for CO. Science shows that current standards protect public health, including that of those who are most susceptible, and also protect the environment. To protect against unhealthy concentrations of CO, EPA is also revising air monitoring requirements. Changes will require more focused monitoring network with CO monitors placed near roads in 52 urban areas with populations of 1 million or more.

August 16, 2011 U.S. EPA invites small businesses, governments, and not-for-profit organizations to participate as small entity representatives (SERs) for small business advocacy review (SBAR) Panel, which will focus on developing rule to regulate amount of perchlorate, a potentially harmful chemical, in drinking water. EPA seeks self-nominations directly from small organizations that may be subject to rule requirements. Submissions must be received by August, 26 2011.
NTSB Makes Safety Recommendations to FAA.

August 16, 2011 NTSB Safety Recommendations address lengthening of oxygen mask hoses in cockpits of airplanes used in 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 121 operations (A-11-79). Also, recommendation A-11-80 suggests amending of Advisory Circular 120-80, "In-Flight Fires," to provide clear guidance to flight crews concerning type of breathing equipment to wear when combating cockpit fire, taking into consideration limitations of portable protective breathing equipment in both passenger and cargo operations.
