August 9, 2011 EPA and USDA announced national partnership to protect Americans' health by improving rural drinking water and wastewater systems. Nationwide, small water and sewage treatment facilities with limited funding and resources face challenges due to rising costs and aging equipment and pipes. Agreement will send federal resources to support communities that need assistance and promote job training to help put people to work while addressing growing workforce shortage in the water industry.

NTSB Recommendations to FAA address aircraft fuel additives.

August 8, 2011 According to NTSB, FAA should amend certification requirements for aircraft requiring fuel additives, including fuel system icing inhibitors, so that those limitations are highlighted by warning in limitations section of airplane flight manual. FAA should also issue guidance on fuel system icing prevention that includes pilot precautions and procedures to avoid fuel system icing problems aboard turbine engine-powered aircraft, and describes possible consequences of failing to use icing inhibitor.
Idaho DOT Director Ness supports lean, customer-based DOTs.

August 8, 2011 In Two-Minute State DOT Update video, Brian Ness, director of Idaho DOT, says that after taking office, he initiated a plan to improve customer service, efficiency, and accountability and save $3.5 million in personnel costs. Realignment reduced layers of management between Ness and department's front line supervisors and eliminated 62 supervisory positions where 1 manager supervised 1 employee. Savings of $5.7 million will be invested into highway construction, maintenance, and equipment.
NTSB Makes Recommendations to European Aviation Safety Agency.

August 8, 2011 NTSB made several recommendations, A-11-75 through A-11-78, to European Aviation Safety Agency. Among these, 2 address certification requirement amendments for aircraft requiring fuel additives: that limitations be highlighted by warning in airplane flight manual. Further suggestions deal with amending aircraft certification fuel placarding requirements so that aircraft requiring fuel additives have fuel filler placard noting limitation and referring to airplane flight manual.
Manufacturers Agree new fuel standards are positive step.

August 8, 2011 NAM President and CEO Jay Timmons commented on White House plan to nearly double U.S. fuel economy standards by 2025. Specifically, Timmons called agreement on new fuel standards between White House and auto industry "a positive development." Timmons went on to say that "This is an example of government and job creators working together in partnership to achieve mutually shared goals" and that this type of consensus building should serve as future rulemaking model.
North American Robot Orders jump 41% in first half of 2011.

August 8, 2011 According to statistics released by RIA, a total of 8,879 robots valued at $577.8 million were ordered by North American companies in the first 6 months of the year. When orders from outside North America are added, totals jump to 10,476 robots valued at $667.9 million. The second quarter was particularly strong, posting gains of 50% in units and 55% in dollars over same period in 2010. Non-automotive orders increased 23% through June, led by gains in metalworking.

August 8, 2011 Building on its commitment to ensuring strong protection from environmental and health hazards for all Americans, Obama Administration announced Federal agencies have agreed to develop environmental justice strategies to protect health of people living in communities overburdened by pollution - particularly minority, low income, and tribal communities. Agencies will also provide public with annual progress reports on their efforts.

August 8, 2011 Dan Arvizu, NREL director since 2005, will serve 6-year term on National Science Board, which advises president and Congress on science and engineering issues, and is the policy-setting and budget-approving body for National Science Foundation. Before NREL, Arvizu served as CTO with CH2M HILL, and worked more than 20 years with Sandia National Laboratories. He holds a bachelor's in mechanical engineering from NMSU and a master's and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Stanford University.
