Specific reasons include inflation threat has yet to manifest in ways that will permanently shift consumer behavior, Japan's recovery related to issues stemming from recent earthquake, and that some conditions which led to expansion of recession are fading. Said Kuehl, "As in most other recoveries, the consumer will hold the key."

This marks fifth straight quarter of double-digit growth. Report also found continuation of widespread industry optimism, as ~˝ of all companies submitting data expect sales to improve over first quarter 2011 levels during next 6 months. Of remaining companies, most anticipate sales comparable to first quarter results.

June 14, 2011 In Trapping and Release of Citrate-Capped Gold Nanoparticles, NIST scientists describe method of attracting and capturing metal-based nanoparticles, and releasing them at desired moment. Scientists can then expose cell cultures to nanoparticles so that hazards to living cells can be assessed. Nanoparticles can be released into fluid stream that flows over cell colonies, mimicking particle interaction with cells in human body.

NASA Satellite takes 3-billionth 'photo' marking 5th year in space.

June 14, 2011 On June 2, CALIPSO Earth-observing spacecraft took its 3 billionth profile using lidar technology, which combines light detection and ranging. Since its launch April 23, 2006, CALIPSO has traveled 750 million miles, generating data to provide information to scientists and researchers from over 35 countries. Data are helping answer questions about Earth's warming and cooling patterns as they are affected by clouds and aerosols.

EPA improves clean-air permitting in Indian country.

June 14, 2011 U.S. EPA finalized rules to ensure that Clean Air Act permitting requirements are applied consistently to facilities in Indian country to better protect public health. Developed after considering public input from key stakeholders including tribes, industry, and states, this action will provide tribes with tools they need to ensure that newly built or expanding facilities meet requirements, while giving industries flexibility to choose most practical and cost effective way to do so.

June 14, 2011 ASTM Subcommittee D10.32 has completed significant revision to ASTM D4774, Specification for User Applied Drug Labels in Anesthesiology, and approved a new standard, ASTM D7709, Test Methods for Measuring Water Vapor Transmission Rate of Pharmaceutical Bottles and Blisters. One of the major changes to ASTM D4774 was the creation of a beta blocker label to reflect the serious nature of this type of medication and frequency of its use by anesthesia professionals.

NIST helps draft technology roadmap for MEMS devices.

June 13, 2011 MEMS Technology Working Group, chaired by NIST's Michael Gaitan, helped draft 1,800-pg technology roadmap issued by International Electronics Manufacturing Initiative (iNEMI). Roadmap contains chapter devoted to understanding evolution of MEMS technology and technical challenges in manufacturing MEMS devices over the next 10 years. Working group has identified key challenges and gaps in device and reliability testing, wafer-level testing, modeling and simulation tools to support MEMS design.
