US Transportation Projects vie for top honors in competition.

September 7, 2011 AASHTO, AAA, and U.S. Chamber of Commerce are announcing top 10 finalists in 2011 America's Transportation Awards competition and releasing video that showcases those projects. "Each of these 10 projects truly exemplifies all that is right with our national transportation system," proclaimed AASHTO executive director John Horsley. Top 10 finalists include projects in Florida, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Montana, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Utah, and Washington.
NIST Scientists measure impact energy of highly charged ions.

September 7, 2011 Building upon their work for which they were awarded a patent, scientists at NIST and Clemson University have measured energy of highly charged ion impacts on a thin film surface for the first time in detail. Understanding how ions discharge energy upon impact will help researchers make better predictive models of how the particles affect surfaces. These models may also help researchers curtail ionic erosion where it would be a bad thing, such as inside a fusion reactor.
IPC releases PCB industry results for July 2011.

September 7, 2011 According to IPC's North American PCB Statistical Program, rigid PCB shipments were down 10.2% and bookings were down 17.0% in July 2011 from July 2010. Year to date, rigid PCB shipments increased 2.3% and bookings declined 10.0%. Flexible circuit shipments were down 28.3% and bookings declined 4.5% compared to July 2010. Year to date, flexible circuit shipments increased 3.2% and bookings increased 8.0%. For rigid and flexible circuits combined, industry shipments decreased 12.1% from July 2010.

Yuska, PMMI President/CEO, said show floor has been expanded "several times" since sales opened to accommodate exhibit space demand. Also, Yuska said expansion is estimated at 20% or more over last fall's predictions for space and exhibitors.

AASHTO supports Obama's call for transportation investment.

September 7, 2011 AASHTO joined President Barack Obama in urging Congress to extend legislation to fund Federal highway and transit programs as prelude to completing a new reauthorization bill. During news conference in Louisville KY, AASHTO President Susan Martinovich, director of the Nevada DOT, stated that if Congress does not act fast more than 500,000 jobs and countless state and local projects to modernize and improve transportation across the U.S. will be in jeopardy.
North American Business Conditions Index rebounds in August.

September 6, 2011 Climbing to 41.4, up 9.4 points from its July reading, NEMA's Electroindustry Business Confidence Index for current North American conditions gained ground in August, but remained below levels suggestive of industry-wide expansion for third straight month. August's EBCI for future North American conditions slipped from a month earlier, dropping to 55.2 from 64 in July, but continued to point toward better conditions over the next 6 months.

September 6, 2011 This fall, colleges across the country will compete to see which schools can reduce, reuse, and recycle the most waste as part of EPA's 2011 Game Day Challenge. Any college or university in the U.S. with a football team can compete. Challenge is for schools to design a waste reduction plan for one 2011 regular season home football game and measure results. Schools can collect common materials for recycling including paper, beverage containers, cardboard, and food to be donated and composted.

FAA Proposes Civil Penalty for use of unqualified mechanic.

September 6, 2011 FAA is proposing $298,500 civil penalty against Capital Cargo International Airlines, Inc. (CCIA) of Orlando, FL for allegedly operating 8 Boeing 727 aircraft when they were not in compliance with federal aviation regulations. Specifically, FAA alleges CCIA permitted unqualified mechanic to perform certain aircraft inspections and to sign airworthiness releases on company's aircraft. CCIA has 30 days from receipt of FAA's enforcement letter to respond.
NREL Data Set Shows Effects of Clouds on solar power generation.

September 6, 2011 National Renewable Energy Laboratory has produced and made available a data set that shows what happens, second-by-second, when clouds pass over solar power installation. Seventeen measurement stations near Hawaii's Honolulu International Airport collected data at 1 sec intervals over course of one year. By understanding such characteristics, utility officials can devise strategies to better manage fluctuations so that the grid is not adversely impacted.
Action on Highway Bill called critical to American jobs.

September 6, 2011 Responding to President Obama's highway bill comments, AEM President Dennis Slater called infrastructure investment "a critical job creator." He noted that projects require long-term planning and that extending clean highway bill benefits America's equipment manufacturers, contractors, and U.S. economy. "Failure to extend the highway bill," according to Slater, "would further endanger the already tenuous economic recovery America's manufacturers are working so hard to strengthen."
