It also moves closer to passing 3 pending free trade agreements with Colombia, Korea, and Panama, which will provide boost to manufacturers and create jobs. Manufacturers urge Congress and Administration to continue moving forward on path laid out in August for passing the agreements.

He called Senate vote "important for jobs and manufacturing competitiveness in the United States" and said that intellectual property "is the lifeblood of manufacturing." Citing current backlog of patent applications and consequential delays in manufacturing, Newhouse said that this legislation will provide necessary resources to expedite examination and sustain patent system.

September 8, 2011 World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and Joint Technical Committee JTC 1, Information Technology, of ISO and IEC formally approved package of W3C Web Services technologies as ISO/IEC International Standards. Package included 8 specifications, including SOAP 1.2 along with Addressing 1.0 and Policy 1.5, which are foundation specifications for message-based service technology.

NIST Scientists create hydrogen storage material.

September 8, 2011 NIST scientists have come up with new approach to problem of safely storing hydrogen in future fuel-cell-powered cars. Their idea consists of molecular scale "veins" of iron permeating grains of magnesium like a network of capillaries. According to NIST materials scientist Leo Bendersky, combination of lightweight magnesium laced with iron could rapidly absorb and release sufficient quantities of hydrogen so that grains made from the two metals could form fuel tank for hydrogen-powered vehicles.
Manufacturers Say NLRB Decisions will harm job creation.

September 7, 2011 Pertaining to 3 case decisions released by National Labor Relations Board (NLRB): Lamons Gasket Co., Specialty Healthcare, and UGL-UNICCO Service Company, NAM President and CEO Jay Timmons said NLRB's actions "put jobs at risk" and could "severely disrupt the workplace." Timmons specifically noted decisions demonstrating government agency's goal of implementing Employee Free Choice Act-like proposals, which Congress has yet to authorize and that hinder employers' flexibility.

September 7, 2011 Survey of ~500 members of 2011 Board of Examiners for Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award shows management and non-management personnel from U.S. organizations agree on mission, customer focus, and commitment to success. However, same organizaions differ on how best to measure quality of work and customer satisfaction. Questionnaires ask employees to gauge level of agreement with statements related to Baldrige criteria, while managers are quizzed on perceptions of their organizations.
NTSB Cites PG&E, Government Oversight in CA pipeline rupture.

September 7, 2011 Regarding probable cause pertaining to natural gas pipeline rupture that ocurred on September 9 in 2010, NTSB cited California utility operator's lax approach to pipeline safety and inadequate oversight of 2 government agencies. NTSB Chairman Deborah A.P. Hersman said that "PG&E exploited weaknesses in a lax system of oversight." Hersman also said regulators were identified "that placed a blind trust in the companies that they were charged with overseeing to the detriment of public safety."
US Transportation Projects vie for top honors in competition.

September 7, 2011 AASHTO, AAA, and U.S. Chamber of Commerce are announcing top 10 finalists in 2011 America's Transportation Awards competition and releasing video that showcases those projects. "Each of these 10 projects truly exemplifies all that is right with our national transportation system," proclaimed AASHTO executive director John Horsley. Top 10 finalists include projects in Florida, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Montana, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Utah, and Washington.
NIST Scientists measure impact energy of highly charged ions.

September 7, 2011 Building upon their work for which they were awarded a patent, scientists at NIST and Clemson University have measured energy of highly charged ion impacts on a thin film surface for the first time in detail. Understanding how ions discharge energy upon impact will help researchers make better predictive models of how the particles affect surfaces. These models may also help researchers curtail ionic erosion where it would be a bad thing, such as inside a fusion reactor.
