August 30, 2011 To address hazards posed by water-damaged electrical equipment in Hurricane Irene's aftermath, NEMA is offering complimentary copies of Guidelines for Handling Water-Damaged Electrical Equipment to electrical distributors, contractors, inspectors, and residents in water-damaged regions. Document provides advice on safe handling of electrical equipment that has been exposed to water and also outlines which items will require complete replacement and which can be reconditioned.

August 26, 2011 Special issue, in planning by Journal of Laser Applications (JLA), will focus on sub-100 nm laser structuring. JLA is seeking papers from laser experts worldwide for inclusion in said issue, which is scheduled to appear in early 2012 and will be open access. To be considered for publication, contributions should clearly address 100 nm limit. Structures can be achieved by ablation, polymerization, modification, or self-organization. Deadline for submission of papers is October 14, 2011.

IPC World PCB Production Report shows 19% growth in 2010.

August 26, 2011 According to World PCB Production Report for 2010, worldwide production of PCBs grew by 19% over 2009 to nearly $55 billion. In America, Europe, and Asia, production respectively grew by 6.9%, 14.4%, and 21.1%. Rigid-flex was highest growth category, and metal-core PCBs, while less than 1% of world PCB production, was second fastest growing category. Report also includes special sections on trends in the HDI/microvia and metal-core PCB markets.

August 25, 2011 Transmitting information-rich photons thousands of miles through fiber-optic cable is easier than reliably sending them a few nanometers through computer circuit. Because of research performed at NIST, University of Maryland's Joint Quantum Institute, and Harvard University, it may soon be possible to steer particles of light accurately through microchips. Scientists say work may lead to more efficient information processors on desktops and offer way to explore the quantum Hall effect.

ELFA releases Monthly Leasing and Finance Index for July.

August 25, 2011 According to ELFA's Monthly Leasing and Finance Index, which reports economic activity for the $521 billion equipment finance sector, overall new business volume for July was $5.7 billion, up 2% from $5.6 billion during same period in 2010. Compared with June volume of $7.3 billion, July volume decreased by 22%. Year to date, new business volume is up 24% over last year. However, percentage of responding companies that experienced drop in volume from the year earlier period rose to 36%.
