NIST Achieves Record-Low Error Rate for quantum data processing.
National Institute of Standards & Technology    Gaithersburg, MD 20899-1070
September 30, 2011 Due to advances in experimental design, NIST physicists achieved record-low probability of error in quantum information processing with single quantum bit (qubit). This is the first published error rate small enough to meet theoretical requirements for building viable quantum computers. NIST experiment with single beryllium ion qubit is described in forthcoming paper, Single-qubit gate error below 10-4 in a trapped ion. However, working quantum computer also will require 2-qubit logic operations with comparably low error rates.
