SPE Issues Call for Entries for Student Parts Competition.

April 7, 2014 SPE Thermoforming Division seeks entries for second annual Student Parts Competition, which encourages students to collaborate on real potential thermoformed application. Project consists of thermoformed product that can be mounted to standard A/C vent in automobile, hold cell phones, pens, or other small objects and be suitable for personalization. Submission deadline is August 15, 2014, and first- and second prize winners will receive, respectively, awards of $1,000 and $500.
BIO Says 2014 RFS Proposal will increase greenhouse gas emissions.

April 4, 2014 According to white paper from BIO, proposal to slash use of biofuels in 2014, if left unchanged, would increase emissions of greenhouse gases next year. BIO's Brent Erickson, lead author, noted that "Increased biofuel use is necessary to continue to achieve year-over-year reductions in carbon emissions in the transportation sector." Erikson also added that actions would limit availability of cellulosic and advanced biofuels as substitute for foreign oil from "unstable nations."
NEMA Comments on WTO rare earth dispute decision.

Gaddis said "NEMA supports non-discriminatory national policies toward trade in raw materials and minerals" while decrying export quotas and export tariffs as supporting "economic protectionism" rather than environmental protection. NEMA President and CEO Gaddis lauded WTO panel's decision as well as collaborative efforts of all parties involved in dispute resolution.

Vehicle and Engine Company agrees to meet emission limits.

April 4, 2014 American Lifan Industry, Inc., an Ontario, California-based vehicle and engine importer, has agreed to ensure that future imports meet federal emission standards after illegally importing and selling nearly 28,000 highway motorcycles, recreational vehicles, and engines manufactured in China that did not comply with Clean Air Act standards to limit harmful pollution. Company will pay $630,000 in civil penalties and will also post a $300,000-$500,000 bond to satisfy any future potential penalties.
FAA proposes civil penalty against All American.

April 4, 2014 FAA is proposing $51,651 civil penalty against All American Aviation Services, LLC for allegedly violating FAA drug and alcohol testing regulations. FAA alleges that All American allowed 8 employees to continue working in safety sensitive positions for more than 30 days after they were hired, even though company had not obtained drug and alcohol testing records from previous employers. FAA also alleges that company failed to comply with procedures for follow-up tests on 2 of these employees.

EPA and Army Corps aim to clarify Clean Water Act.

April 1, 2014 EPA and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers released proposed rule to clarify protection under Clean Water Act for streams and wetlands that form foundation of nation’s water resources. Specifically, proposed rule clarifies that: most seasonal and rain dependent streams are protected; wetlands near rivers and streams are protected; and other types of waters may have more uncertain connections with downstream water and protection will be evaluated through case specific analysis.

NREL drives research on hydrogen fuel cells.

April 1, 2014 NREL researchers are working with auto manufacturers and component vendors to take a look at both the infrastructure and cost challenges related to hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles and fueling stations. NREL's new Energy Systems Integration Facility includes 7,000 sq-ft of lab space built for hydrogen and fuel cell research. Approximately 50 researchers contribute to hydrogen or fuel cell related tasks, including production, storage, codes and standards, technology validation, and analysis.
