ANSI president and CEO S. Joe Bhatia, in his welcome remarks, said "An organization's commitment to more effective energy management makes positive contributions toward reducing depletion of energy resources." He also noted that "smart energy use can also free up budget dollars for other initiatives."

Green Power Community Challenge Winners announced by EPA.

September 28, 2011 Washington, D.C. and Brookeville, MD communities won Green Power Community Challenge for most amount of green power used annually and highest green power percentage of total electricity use, respectively. Year-long challenge encouraged communities to voluntarily increase use of green power generated from renewable resources. According to EPA's Gina McCarthy, this challenge proved any community, by harnessing power of its businesses and residents, can achieve real environmental results.
NTSB makes safety recommendations to PHMSA.

September 28, 2011 According to the NTSB, the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration should require operators of natural gas and hazardous liquid pipelines to provide system-specific information about pipeline systems to emergency response agencies of communities and jurisdictions in which pipelines are located. All operators should be required to equip SCADA systems with tools to assist in recognizing and pinpointing location of leaks, including line breaks.
Equipment Leasing Index shows overall growth in new business.

September 28, 2011 ELFA's Monthly Leasing and Finance Index (MLFI-25) for August shows overall new business volume as $5.7 billion, which is up 33% from volume of same period in 2010. Volume is unchanged from previous month, and year-to-date cumulative new business volume is up 25%. All credit quality metrics showed improvement, with receivables over 30 days decreasing to 2.5% and charge-offs down as well. Credit standards relaxed, as number of lease applications approved increased to 77.6%.

September 27, 2011 ASTM D7588, Guide for FT-IR Fingerprinting of a Non-Aqueous Liquid Paint as Supplied in the Manufacturer's Container, standardizes technique for collecting IR spectra of non-aqueous liquid paints directly out of their cans. According to members of ASTM Committees D01 and D33, this guide fosters collection of "good quality reproducible spectra of liquid paint samples straight out of the can without the need for time-consuming separation of components."

QR codes and their Microsoft counterpart are becoming a part of the sales process. If a customer wants to know the weight or duty cycle of a machine, the salesperson can use a smartphone to scan tag and access information. Mobile bar codes can also assist in post-sale service and support.

September 27, 2011 NIST researchers warn combination of seismic and wind hazards increase risk of structural damage to as much as twice level implied in current building codes, which only consider natural hazards individually. Published in Journal of Structural Engineering, Dat Duthinh, Emil Simiu, and Chiara Crosti show design limits, even taking into account that multiple hazards almost never occur simultaneously, and provide method to assess such risks using common metric of structural resistance.

Report shows that 54% of participants expect economic activity to remain unchanged, up from 47% in August, and 47% expect anticipate no change in incoming orders, compared to 38% last month. However, 33% percent of participants report that average daily shipping levels are above levels of 3 months ago, up from 27% in August.

September 27, 2011 ASTM International Committee E35 on Pesticides, Antimicrobials, and Alternative Control Methods invites interested parties to join biorationals task group, which has primary purpose of defining products being marketed as biorationals. Definitions are needed to eliminate confusing terminology and, in some cases, overlap of terminology applied to same material. To accomplish its initial goal, task group has begun work on its first proposed standard: ASTM WK32362, Terminology for Biorationals.

Users will include U.S. Federal Highway Administration, state DOTs, architects, and environmental, structural and civil engineers.
