Over 100 people from 65 companies and organizations were in attendance, and guest speakers reflected range of categories: utilities, automotive, and consumer appliances.

August 10, 2011 Adopted from American Concrete Institute test method, ASTM C1741, Test Method for Bleed Stability of Cementitious Post-Tensioning Tendon Grout, will help ensure safety of construction projects. Fred Goodwin, fellow scientist, BASF Construction Chemicals, LLC, and ASTM member, notes that being able to predict bleeding in grout before injecting into tendon will maximize grout performance for bleeding resistance, promoting safer and more reliable construction practices.

August 10, 2011 President Obama will meet with industry officials to discuss fuel efficiency and greenhouse gas pollution standards for work trucks, buses, and other heavy-duty vehicles and thank them for leadership in finalizing national program for these vehicles. U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and U.S. EPA developed standards in close coordination with companies that met with President Obama, as well as other stakeholders, following requests from companies to develop this program.

Joint certification and test program will be used to certify wireless and wired devices that support IP-based smart energy applications and end-user devices such as thermostats, appliances, and gateways.

NIST Ethanol Research warns against pipeline degradation.

August 9, 2011 NIST researchers caution that ethanol, especially bacteria sometimes found in it, can dramatically degrade pipelines. Experimental evidence shows bacteria that feed on ethanol and produce acid boost fatigue crack growth rates by at least 25X levels occurring in air alone. According to NIST postdoctoral researcher Jeffrey Sowards, "These are important data for pipeline engineers who want to safely and reliably transport ethanol fuel in repurposed oil and gas pipelines."
Coatings show promise as flame retardants in polyurethane foam .

August 9, 2011 Gram for gram, carbon nanofiber-filled coatings devised by researchers from NIST and Texas A&M University outperformed flame retardants used in the polyurethane foam of upholstered furniture and mattresses by at least 160% and perhaps by as much as 1,130%. Test results, reported in the journal Polymer, suggest that significant fire-safety advantages can be gained by coating polyurethane foam with a club-sandwich-like arrangement of thin layers containing carbon nanofibers and polymers.
