October 5, 2011 AAMA Virtual Library (AVL), announced on September 26 during AMMA's National Fall Conference, enables members to purchase annual licenses in order to offer electronic versions of AAMA publications to employees. Initially being offered to AAMA Category 1 corporate members, technical consultant, and professional members, agreements are on one-year basis that requires annual renewal. All electronic document licenses will be available online through AAMA's website.
EPA Commits to Support Smart Growth in 125 communities.

October 5, 2011 U.S. EPA plans to help estimated 125 local, state, and tribal governments create more housing choices, increase transportation efficiency and reliability, as well as support vibrant and healthy neighborhoods that attract businesses. EPA's commitment, totaling more than $1.5 million, will come through 2 separate programs: Smart Growth Implementation Assistance program (SGIA) and Building Blocks for Sustainable Communities program.
ITS World Congress to feature NTCIP Interoperability Showcase.

October 4, 2011 NEMA and member companies for transportation management products will present NTCIP(TM) Interoperability Showcase at 18th World Congress on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), which takes place in Orlando, FL from October 17-19, 2011. Showcase consists of full-scale demonstration that displays interoperability of NTCIP-compliant products. Using private wireless network for connectivity, NTCIP device interoperability demonstration will be distributed across Orlando Convention Center.

October 4, 2011 U.S. Customs and Border Protection has signed agreements with the EPA and Department of Transportation's Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration to advance information-sharing to improve targeting of imports for health and safety violations. EPA and PHSMA are now part of CBP's Import Safety Commercial Targeting and Analysis Center, a multi-agency center for targeting commercial shipments that pose potential threats to health and safety of Americans.
EPA Mapping Tool improves public access to enforcement data.

October 4, 2011 Part of U.S. EPA's Enforcement and Compliance History Online (ECHO) database, EPA and State Enforcement Actions Map lets public access federal and state enforcement information in interactive format and compare enforcement action information by state. Map will be refreshed monthly to include up-to-date information pertaining to enforcement actions taken to address violations of air, water, and waste laws. Users can choose year, media, and actions level (federal, state, or both).
NIST extends response period for comments on AMTech program.

October 4, 2011 To accommodate additional interested parties, NIST announced 30-day extension on request seeking public comment on the proposed Advanced Manufacturing Technology Consortia program. NIST's Request for Information asked for public comments on how to structure the proposed new program, which would foster public-private research consortia focused on long-term industrial research needs in the area of advanced manufacturing. Comment period now ends on Thursday, Oct 20, 2011.

Container's interlocking triangular design and uniform size and shape make packing, shipping and warehouse storage more efficient. Accordion-type compression reduces container height as product is dispensed, and container folds flat when empty for recycling.

The new map, which shows a tapestry of salinity patterns, demonstrates Aquarius' ability to detect large-scale salinity distribution features clearly and with sharp contrast. Aquarius soon will allow scientists to explore connections between global rainfall, ocean currents, and climate variations.

This proposed ASTM International standard, providing test specific to such coatings, is being developed by Subcommittee G01.05 on Laboratory Corrosion Tests. Primary users will include specifying architects/engineers and municipal wastewater owners seeking to extend service life of infrastructure assets.

Non-parametric methods are useful to anyone using data analysis tools when nature of underlying distribution is not known, when attribute type data exists, and when just a small sample is available to compare 2 or more groups and show significance when sizeable difference can be expected.

October 3, 2011 Innovalight of Sunnyvale, CA devised way to suspend silicon in solution without tiny particles glomming onto one another or sinking to bottom of container. Researchers at U.S. Department of Energy's NREL proved that this Silicon Ink can prove useful for solar cells. Specifically, Silicon Ink can make solar cells 1% more efficient when added to manufacturing process. Technology also saves manufacturing plants money via precise and clean application.

Ten state projects are competing for People's Choice Award to be decided by popular vote of general public, as well as National Grand Prize, which will be decided by panel of judges.
Shipments of T5 and T8 Lamps increase during first half of 2011.

October 3, 2011 NEMA shipment indexes for T5 and T8 linear fluorescent lamps increased 30.2% and 12.5%, respectively, during first half of 2011 compared to same period last year. While Q2 2011 index values for T5 and T8 lamps were at record highs, first half shipments of T12 lamps declined 11.1% on year-over-year basis. During Q2 2011, T5 and T8 lamps increased their respective shares of combined market by 0.2 and 0.1 percentage points. T12 lamps gave back 0.3 percentage points, decreasing to 30%.
NEMA publishes guidelines for electric fire pump controllers.

October 3, 2011 NEMA has published NEMA ICS 14-2010 for Application Guide for Electric Fire Pump Controllers and NEMA ICS 15-2011 for Instructions for the Handling, Installation, Operation, and Maintenance for Electric Fire Pump Controllers Rated Not More than 600V. NEMA ICS 14 stresses those considerations specific to fire pump installations, while NEMA ICS 15 helps avoid personal injury and equipment damage during various processes.
