October 19, 2011 Passed in 1986 as part of reauthorization for Superfund, Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act has played a significant role in protecting people's health and the environment by providing communities and emergency planners with area-specific information on toxic chemical releases. Under EPCRA, EPA collects information on toxic releases through Toxic Release Inventory program, a public database containing information regarding industrial releases of over 600 toxic chemicals.

October 17, 2011 ASTM E2775, Practice for Guided Wave Testing of Above Ground Steel Pipework Using Piezoelectric Effect Transduction, is under jurisdiction of Subcommittee E07.10 on Specialized NDT Methods, part of ASTM International Committee E07 on Nondestructive Testing. Guided wave testing is among the most difficult forms of nondestructive tests and its success can be dependent on test operator. ASTM E2775 helps overcome obstacles by addressing fundamental elements of guided wave testing.

Manufacturers urge Congress to halt harmful regulations.

October 13, 2011 Recently, 307 manufacturers and business groups joined NAM in asking congressional leaders to support the EPA Regulatory Relief Act of 2011. This bipartisan legislation addresses EPA's Boiler MACT rules, which will have a negative impact on the economy and jobs. Studies estimate that implementation of the final Boiler MACT rules would cost more than $14 billion in capital for the manufacturing sector to install new devices on boilers, hurting investment and job creation.
NIST Colleagues Congratulate Shechtman on Nobel chemistry prize.

October 13, 2011 NIST colleagues of Dan Shechtman joined scientific community in congratulating him on winning 2011 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Shechtman discovered quasicrystal while working as guest researcher at NIST, then known as the National Bureau of Standards, in 1982. Noting said discovery's impact on material fabrication, NIST Director Patrick Gallagher commented, "We are thrilled that Dr. Shechtman's pioneering work has been recognized with this well-deserved prize."
