October 24, 2011 ANSI C119.6 Electric Connectors-Non-Sealed, Multiport Connector Systems Rated 600 Volts or less for Aluminum and Copper Conductors, establishes electrical and mechanical test requirements for connectors used at normal operating temperatures that do not exceed 90°C. It includes spreadsheet files in Annex D that can be used to collect current cycle test data. An alternate accelerated current cycle test method, called the current cycle submersion test, is also included.

Memphis Airport gets new air traffic control tower.

October 24, 2011 FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt dedicated $72.6 million air traffic control tower at Memphis International Airport. Standing 336 ft tall, tower is equipped with NextGen technology and 850 ft˛ tower cab with enough room to accommodate additional future air traffic control positions. Base building, measuring 24,000 ft˛, houses training rooms, administrative offices, and expanded terminal radar approach control, with space for future growth.

October 21, 2011 NEMA welcomed passage by U.S. House and Senate of implementing legislation for free trade agreements with South Korea, Colombia, and Panama. U.S. electrical equipment and medical imaging equipment manufacturers exported more than $1.4 billion worth of goods to South Korea, Colombia, and Panama in 2010, combined. Most customs tariffs on these goods will be dropped to zero immediately upon on effective date of agreements, while rest will be eliminated progressively in coming years.

October 21, 2011 AASHTO Board of Directors voted to elect Michigan Transportation Director Kirk Steudle as association president for next year. He will emphasize implementation of new transportation technologies to decrease expense and improve transportation system as well as push for multiyear, well-funded surface transportation reauthorization bill in Congress and advocate expanded use of performance measures for infrastructure investments. RI Transportation Director Michael Lewis was elected AASHTO VP.
FAA awards $2 million environmental grant to San Diego Airport.

October 21, 2011 The grant through FAA's Voluntary Airport Low Emission program is part of a major airport improvement project at San Diego International Airport called "The Green Build." It will enable airport to install land-side power unit and pre-conditioned air unit at each of 10 new aircraft gates, as well as 7 air units at existing gates. Units will allow arriving aircraft to shut off auxiliary power and connect to cleaner central heating/cooling system, saving fuel and reducing emissions.
EPA to develop natural gas wastewater standards.

October 21, 2011 Since no comprehensive set of national standards exists at this time, U.S. EPA is announcing a schedule to develop standards for wastewater discharges produced by natural gas extraction from underground coalbed and shale formations. Announcement is in line with priorities identified in president's Blueprint for Secure Energy Future, and is consistent with Secretary of Energy Advisory Board recommendations on steps to support safe development of natural gas resources.
NIST awards cooperative agreement to University of Maryland.

October 21, 2011 NIST awarded $1 million cooperative agreement to University of Maryland at College Park. Researchers at UMD's Institute for Systems Research will help NIST as it develops and deploys standards, test methods, and measurement tools to support cyber-physical systems, which are networked physical, computer, and biological technologies. UMD/NIST effort can help U.S. industry accelerate development of CPS products that create jobs, while also protecting CPS infrastructure from cyber threats.
EPRI Reports measure consumers' electric vehicle preferences.

October 21, 2011 According to EPRI surveys, more than 50% of people surveyed in service territories of Tennessee Valley Authority and Southern Company would prefer to charge an electric vehicle at home. Surveys also characterized consumers' perceptions of EV ownership and their expectations of electric utilities and associated services. Almost two-thirds of respondents expect their local utility to develop public charging stations, while more than half expect utility to offer installation of at-home charging.

October 20, 2011 During America's Transportation Awards competition, Washington State DOT claimed People's Choice Award for its Operation I-5 Partnership Project and Florida DOT was chosen as Grand Prize winner for its Interstate 10/Interstate 95 interchange rebuild known as "The Big I" project. AASHTO presented $10,000 cash prizes to both winning transportation departments, which will be used to support charity or academic scholarship program of their choice.
FAA Breaks Ground on new air traffic control tower in Cleveland.

October 20, 2011 U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt broke ground on $69 million air traffic control tower and Terminal Radar Approach Control facility at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. Replacing tower dating back to 1988, new 324 ft tall tower will purportedly provide controllers with updated technology and better view of operations. Facility construction is scheduled to be completed in 2014 and expected to generate nearly 100 new construction jobs.

October 19, 2011 Passed in 1986 as part of reauthorization for Superfund, Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act has played a significant role in protecting people's health and the environment by providing communities and emergency planners with area-specific information on toxic chemical releases. Under EPCRA, EPA collects information on toxic releases through Toxic Release Inventory program, a public database containing information regarding industrial releases of over 600 toxic chemicals.
