November 22, 2011 At CO-LABS' annual Governor's Awards for High-Impact Research, Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper honored scientists and researchers for work in renewable energy, sustainability, disease prevention, and atmospheric science. Hickenlooper presented NREL's Jerry Olson with Foundational Technology award, for work on gallium-arsenide tandem cells. Also, DOE's NREL was recognized for "Large-volume Battery Calorimeter (LVBC)," which was led by Principal Investigator Matthew A. Keyser.

November 21, 2011 National Initiative on Cybersecurity Education (NICE) has published draft document that classifies typical duties and skill requirements of cybersecurity workers. NICE Cybersecurity Workforce Framework provides working taxonomy designed to fit into any organization's existing occupational structures. It organizes cybersecurity work into high-level categories ranging from design, operation, and maintenance of cybersecurity systems to incident response, information gathering, and analysis.
NIST Physicists chip away at mystery of antimatter imbalance.

November 21, 2011 Team of researchers working at NIST has concluded 10-year study of the fate of neutrons in attempt to understand why there is an imbalance between matter and antimatter in the universe. Pieter Mumm, a physicist at NIST's Physical Measurements Lab and his collaborators used detector to explore neutron decay with greater sensitivity than was ever possible. Although analysis turned up no imbalance between decay paths, improved sensitivity of approach enables numerous theories to be limited.

November 21, 2011 ODVA announced the Semiconductor Equipment and Materials International organization has renewed EtherNet/IP and DeviceNet as standards in its sensor bus network communications activities. SEMI is accountable for all global standards used by semiconductor equipment manufacturers. EtherNet/IP and DeviceNet are designated by SEMI as an E54 standard, which recognizes networks that enable communication between intelligent devices in a semiconductor manufacturing tool.

November 21, 2011 U.S. EPA and Department of Energy are releasing 2012 Fuel Economy Guide, providing information that can help consumers choose more efficient new vehicles that help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Fuel efficient vehicles come in various fuel types, classes, and sizes, and many new advanced technology vehicles debut on this year's list of top fuel economy performers. Fuel economy leaders within each vehicle category include products such as conventional gasoline models and clean diesels.
Researchers Demonstrate electron beam can manipulate objects.

November 18, 2011 "Are electron tweezers possible," by researchers from NIST and University of Virginia V.P. Oleshko and J.M. Howe, demonstrates that beams produced by electron microscopes can be used to look at nanoscale objects as well as move them around, position them, and theoretically assemble them. According to Oleshko, electron tweezers could potentially be "a versatile and valuable tool" for very fine manipulation in materials science.

Craig McClung, program director at Southwest Research Institute, was honored for contributions to Committee E08 on Fatigue and Fracture and the development of standard test methods. A member of ASTM International since 1990, McClung is a specialist in fatigue crack growth and began his career at SwRI in 1988 as a senior research engineer. His major technical contribution included development of DARWIN, the probabilistic, fracture mechanics-based, reliability assessment tool.
