A4A Commends EU Parliament on EU ETS "Stop the Clock" extension.

April 10, 2014 Airlines for America (A4A) commended European Union (EU) Parliament for its work in agreeing to extend "stop the clock" provision on unilateral application of EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) to international aviation. This will stay application of EU ETS to flights to and from EU through 2016. In comment, A4A President and CEO Nicholas E. Calio said that this extension protects "U.S. travelers and shippers from unwarranted EU ETS tax hikes that drive up the cost of air travel."
USDA-EPA to improve access to clean water along Mexico border.

April 10, 2014 According to findings published in U.S. Mexico Border Scoping Assessment Phase 1 Report, communities in Arizona, California, New Mexico, and Texas need improved water infrastructure and/or face environmental and/or public health risks associated with inadequate or failing water infrastructure systems. Resources provided through USDA and EPA joint initiative will help mitigate health and environmental risks, advance economic development, and improve quality of life for those living in the region.
EPA seeks small entity participation in emissions standards.

April 9, 2014 EPA is inviting small businesses, governments, and not-for-profit organizations to participate as Small Entity Representatives for Small Business Advocacy Review Panel, which will focus on agency's proposed extension of medium- and heavy-duty vehicles' greenhouse gas emissions standards beyond model year 2018. This action could affect manufacturers of on-road vehicles, from semi-trucks and trailers to largest pickup trucks and vans, along with all types and sizes of work trucks and buses.

April 9, 2014 Amazon.com, Inc. (Amazon) paid $91,000 civil penalty that FAA proposed for violating Department of Transportation Hazardous Materials Regulations. On September 16, 2013, Amazon employees shipped one package containing flammable liquid adhesive by air on Federal Express (FedEx) from Whitestown, IN, to Boulder, CO. Shipment was without requisite shipping papers or emergency response information and was not marked, labeled, or properly packaged.
NTSB Training Course focuses on helicopter accident investigation.

April 9, 2014 Helicopter Accident Investigation Course will be held August 18–22, 2014 at NTSB's Training Center in Ashburn, VA. Course will provide overview of procedures and methods used as well as skills required for all aspects of helicopter accident investigation. Instructors from U.S. Army National Guard will also provide instruction in helicopter aerodynamics, operations, and investigations, and attendees will get to practice investigative skills via hands-on examination.
FAA Withdraws Suspension for ASI aircraft repair station.

April 9, 2014 Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) withdrew emergency order which suspended repair station certificate of Aviation Service, Inc. (ASI) in Lexington, KY. Order was withdrawn by FAA on March 11 after ASI met requirement to establish FAA-approved Employee Training Program (ETP). Initially, FAA issued suspension of ASI's certificate after it failed to establish required training program; agency determined emergency existed related to safety of traveling public.

April 8, 2014 AAMA 712-14, Voluntary Specification for Mechanically Attached Flexible Flashing establishes minimum performance criteria to allow user to evaluate and select mechanically attached flexible flashing products intended for exterior perimeter of fenestration products. AAMA 712 calls for laboratory testing per ASTM methods to verify performance parameters, including tensile strength, water resistance, low-temperature flexibility, puncture resistance, tear resistance, and accelerated UV aging.

April 8, 2014 During its annual dinner and auction in Orlando, FL, Meat Industry Suppliers Alliance Foundation raised over $93,500. Record number of attendees bid on items ranging from advertising packages to electronics at the event, which was held in conjunction with the FPSA Annual Meeting and Conference. Foundation will be awarding seven $5,000 scholarships to students studying meat sciences at universities across the country. Students will be able to apply through May 1st of 2014.
NEMA Commends Senators on building energy efficiency legislation.

April 8, 2014 NEMA welcomed Energy Efficiency Tax Incentives Act (S.2189), introduced by Senators Ben Cardin (D-MD), Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), and Brian Schatz (D-HI), which includes language that would reinstate and improve Commercial Building Tax Deduction. After lauding aforementioned senators for their leadership in advancing energy efficiency in domestic energy economy, NEMA's Evan R. Gaddis specifically noted "significant" gains to be had from reduced overall energy use through building improvements.
BIO Announces Kay Holcombe as Senior VP, Science Policy.

Holcombe comes to BIO from Sanofi, where she recently served as VP, FDA Alliances and Federal Agency Relations.
NEMA Standard addresses heavy-duty switches.

April 7, 2014 NEMA has published NEMA KS 1-2013 standard, which covers heavy-duty enclosed and dead-front switches that are rated at not more than 600 V and 4,000 A with or without horsepower rating. DC ratings shall be up to and including 600 V, 1200 A; with or without provision for fuses; with current-carrying parts and mechanisms enclosed in metallic or nonmetallic cases, or that are enclosed when mounted in enclosed switchboard, panelboard, or similar; and manually operable by means of external handles.
NEMA publishes composite insulator standards.

April 7, 2014 ANSI/NEMA C29.12-2013 specifies composite suspension (tension) insulators with minimum section length of 46 in., while ANSI/NEMA C29.17-2013 specifies composite transmission line post type insulators with section lengths 41 in. or greater. Lastly, ANSI/NEMA C29.18-2013 specifies composite distribution line post type insulators with section lengths 30.6 in. or less. All insulators addressed by standards are intended for use on overhead lines for electric power systems. 
FAA Proposes Civil Penalty against Alfa Chemistry.

April 7, 2014 Civil penalty of $325,000 proposed by FAA against Alfa Chemistry stems from alleged violations of U.S. Department of Transportation Hazardous Materials Regulations. Specifically, FAA alleges that, on 2 separate FedEx cargo flights, Alfa Chemistry shipped undeclared hazardous material (Acrolein) that DOT regulations prohibit from being transported on passenger and cargo aircraft. Also, FAA determined Alfa Chemistry failed to properly train and test employees who packaged said Acrolein.
