September 29, 2011 NEMA has published ANSI Z535.1 through .6 and Color Chart for Safety Alerting Standards. Z535 series is valuable for those needing comprehensive source of standards relating to design, application, and use of safety signs, colors, and symbols. It is used by manufacturers of ink, pigments, and dyes for the safety sign industry, including sign, label, and tag makers; designers of safety signs, labels, tags, and tapes; and symbol comprehension testing programs.

September 29, 2011 ASTM International Committee A06 on Magnetic Properties welcomes participation of stakeholders interested in development of international standards for magnetic materials and magnetic properties. Biannual meeting will be held November 14-16, 2011 in Tampa, FL. Formed in 1903, ASTM Committee A06 oversees ~50 standards dealing with magnetic materials and magnetic properties. Through its 5 subcommittees, A06 develops variety of test methods and materials specifications.

September 29, 2011 To help ensure that speakerphone conversations can be heard loud and clear, IEEE has released IEEE 1329-2010, which provides techniques for measuring electroacoustic and voice-switching characteristics of speakerphones that connect directly or indirectly to analog or digital telephone network. ANSI/AIHA Z9.9-2010, Portable Ventilation Systems, describes fundamental good practices related to design, manufacture, maintenance, use, and testing of portable ventilation systems.
Incandescent Lamp Index increases during second quarter.

September 29, 2011 NEMA's shipment index for incandescent lamps increased for second consecutive quarter in Q2 2011, showing improvement of 5.6% over same period last year. Conversely, index for compact fluorescent lamps declined for fifth consecutive quarter. Rate of decline accelerated to 18.5% on year-over-year basis versus 16.8% y/y and 8.7% y/y during Q1 2011 and Q4 2010, respectively. Incandescent lamp share of 80% for combined incandescent-CFL market is the highest reading since Q4 2007.
EPA Scientists receive Presidential Honor.

September 29, 2011 Dr. Gayle Hagler and Dr. David Reif were named recipients of the 2010 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. Dr. Hagler was nominated for leading research in development and use of new technologies to measure and map air pollutant emissions near roadside locations. In addition to studying subsets of childhood asthma, Dr. Reif was nominated for developing tools for prioritizing and profiling chemicals for potential toxicity to human health and environment.

They will each receive up to 5-year research grant to further their study in support of critical government missions.

A member of ASTM since 1979, Slavin was cited for his exceptional leadership and technical contributions to development of occupational health and safety standards. Slavin began his career as an industrial hygienist at Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. and served as coordinator of industrial hygiene at MVMA before joining Navistar in 1979.

Year-long challenge encouraged communities to voluntarily increase use of green power generated from renewable resources. According to EPA's Gina McCarthy, this challenge proved any community, by harnessing power of its businesses and residents, can achieve real environmental results.
NTSB makes safety recommendations to PHMSA.

September 28, 2011 According to the NTSB, the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration should require operators of natural gas and hazardous liquid pipelines to provide system-specific information about pipeline systems to emergency response agencies of communities and jurisdictions in which pipelines are located. All operators should be required to equip SCADA systems with tools to assist in recognizing and pinpointing location of leaks, including line breaks.
Equipment Leasing Index shows overall growth in new business.

September 28, 2011 ELFA's Monthly Leasing and Finance Index (MLFI-25) for August shows overall new business volume as $5.7 billion, which is up 33% from volume of same period in 2010. Volume is unchanged from previous month, and year-to-date cumulative new business volume is up 25%. All credit quality metrics showed improvement, with receivables over 30 days decreasing to 2.5% and charge-offs down as well. Credit standards relaxed, as number of lease applications approved increased to 77.6%.

September 27, 2011 ASTM D7588, Guide for FT-IR Fingerprinting of a Non-Aqueous Liquid Paint as Supplied in the Manufacturer's Container, standardizes technique for collecting IR spectra of non-aqueous liquid paints directly out of their cans. According to members of ASTM Committees D01 and D33, this guide fosters collection of "good quality reproducible spectra of liquid paint samples straight out of the can without the need for time-consuming separation of components."
