NAM Says Trucking Hours Regulation will harm supply chains.

December 27, 2011 NAM's Jay Timmons issued statement regarding revised trucking hours of service rule released by Department of Transportation. In addition to commenting how said rule would negatively impact manufacturers' supply chains, distribution operations, and productivity, Timmons also noted how Administration conceded lack of evidence in support of specific proposed changes. Furthermore, Timmons commented how placing more trucks on road during peak driving times will fail to improve safety.
Dale F. Bohn to Serve on ASTM International board of directors.

December 26, 2011 Elected to ASTM International board of directors for 3-year term, Dale F. Bohn has been involved with Committee D04 on Road and Paving Materials since he joined ASTM International in 1996. He serves on several D04 technical subcommittees and has been chairman of Subcommittee D04.41 as well as Subcommittee D04.42. Bohn also serves on Committee D02 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants, and is current chairman of Committee on Technical Committee Operations.
Manufacturers Say Utility MACT will be extremely costly.

December 26, 2011 In response to Utility MACT rule released by EPA, NAM President and CEO Jay Timmons issued statement in which he said "EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson has finalized one of the most costly regulations that will do more damage to our economy and job growth." Timmons claimed that in 2015 Utility MACT will cost $11.4 billion. He also pointed out that utility companies will be forced to shut down power generation plants throughout country, threatening reliability of power grid.
NTSB Hearing to address air show and air race safety.

December 26, 2011 NTSB announced preliminary agenda for 1-day hearing, which will be held Jan 10, 2012. Entitled "Air Race and Air Show Safety", meeting will bring public attention to safety issues involved in aviation event operations and provide NTSB Members and investigative staff with deeper understanding of regulations, protocols, and practices used in planning and operations of air shows and races. Information gathered in hearing will assist NTSB staff in investigation of incidents and accidents.

Blakey as AIA's President and CEO as well as AIA's Chief Financial Officer, Ginette C. Colot, as Secretary-Treasurer.

December 26, 2011 Four winners were honored for excellence in technical writing during opening ceremonies at 2011 SPE® Automotive Composites Conference and Exhibition. Dr. Hannes Fuchs, senior engineer at Multimatic Engineering received highest score, while Xian Jiang, doctoral candidate at Michigan State University received second highest score. Dr. W.H. Katie Zhong, a professor at WSU and Francesco Deleo, a doctoral candidate at University of Washington tied for third place.

Linear Fluorescent Lamp Shipments increase in Q3 2011.

December 26, 2011 During Q3 2011, NEMA's indexes for linear fluorescent lamp shipments increased compared to previous quarter. T8 lamp shipments led the way with 6.1% gain, while shipments of T5 and T12 lamps followed posting increases of 5.7 and 0.9%, respectively. Year-over-year performance showed double digit growth of 18.8% for T5s and 20.8% for T8s, while index for T12 lamps slipped nearly 10% compared to 1 year ago.

December 26, 2011 Interested parties are invited to participate in development of ASTM WK34937, Guide for Evaluation, Calibration and Correlation of Continuous Friction Measurement Equipment. CFMEs are used primarily in airports but are also seeing use on highways. Tests are used to gather necessary calibrated friction information for determining skid resistance of both runways and highways. Once approved, standard will be used by test tracks, airport personnel, and friction measuring equipment manufacturers.
NREL Licenses Technology to increase solar cell efficiency.

December 23, 2011 NREL announced that Natcore Technology Inc. has been granted patent license agreement to develop black silicon products. Also, Natcore and NREL also will enter Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) to develop commercial prototypes based on NREL's black silicon inventions and patents. NREL's William Farris called this "one more step" towards making solar energy cost competitive with other forms of energy by decade's end.

Incandescent Lamp Shipment Index shows sales remain robust.

December 23, 2011 Although showing a decrease of 1.2% from previous quarter, NEMA incandescent lamps shipment index for Q3 2011 increased 21.5% compared to same period last year. Latter represents largest swing, in either direction, since 2008. Also, compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) shipments registered gain of 0.9% over Q2 2011 but declined for fourth consecutive y/y comparison by 15.4%. Shares of the two lamp types were essentially unchanged compared to the previous quarter.

Sodium Vapor HID Lamp Index shows quarterly, yearly increases.

December 23, 2011 NEMA Q3 2011 shipment index for sodium vapor high intensity discharge (HID) lamps shows increases of 7.1% and 2.0%, respectively, for quarterly and year-over-year results. Metal halide lamps, however, decreased 5.3% from previous quarter, and mercury vapor lamps decreased 0.6%. Moreover, mercury vapor index posted 19.4% decline on year-over-year basis. Market share variations saw sodium vapor lamp increase of 2.7% to 34.4% and metal halide lamp decrease to 60.9%.

December 23, 2011 ASTM WK31185, Practice for Amusement Ride Steam Locomotives, will provide owners and operators of amusement-related steam locomotives with reference for helping maintain, operate, and inspect equipment to promote guest and employee safety. ASTM WK35400, Practice for Amusement Railway Ride Tracks, Devices and Facilities, will apply to design, manufacture, installation, operation, maintenance, and inspection of permanently installed tracks as well as their associated devices and facilities.

December 23, 2011 ASTM International standards are prominently featured in the Final Guidance for the Evaluation and Mitigation of Subsurface Vapor Intrusion to Indoor Air, a document released by California Environmental Protection Agency's Department of Toxic Substances Control. Document details how developers and site cleanup contractors should address and mitigate volatile organic compound emissions that enter buildings from contaminated soil.
NTSB Chairman addresses FAA flight and duty time rule.

December 23, 2011 According to statement made by NTSB Chairman Deborah A.P. Hersman, fatigue has been on NTSB's Most Wanted List of transportation safety improvements since 1990. Countless accidents trace pilot fatigue as a contributing factor. NTSB is pleased that FAA issued science-based rule for flight and duty time. While rule is not perfect, it is an improvement over status quo for large passenger-carrying operations. NTSB is disappointed, however, that new rule is limited to Part 121 carriers.
