Advanced biofuels can be commercialized rapidly for military use, on military timelines, with adequate support and coordination of efforts by U.S. Departments of Agriculture, Defense and Energy. Military use of advanced biofuels could in turn validate emerging technologies and unlock private investment in future production for civilian markets.

October 11, 2011 BIO announced that a newly-formed bioscience organization in Mississippi has joined the Council of State Bioscience Associations, an autonomous group of state affiliates operating within BIO. With the addition of Mississippi, the CSBA grows to 52 organizations in 48 states. According to Dr. Leigh Ann Ross, President of MS BIO's Board of Directors, this partnership with BIO further validates and supports Mississippi's emerging biotech presence.
New ASTM Surgical Standard reflects wider use of Alloy UNS R56320.

October 11, 2011 Structured to reflect more widespread use of UNS R56320, proposed standard ASTM WK34079, Specification for Wrought Titanium-3Aluminum-2.5Vanadium Alloy for Surgical Implant Applications (UNS R56320), is being developed by Subcommittee F04.12 on Metallurgical Materials. F04 member Mark Ransick says suppliers of titanium and purchasers who use this alloy in medical devices or implants will be primary users of this new standard.

October 11, 2011 ASTM A1071/A1071M, Test Method for Evaluating Hygrothermal Corrosion Resistance of Permanent Magnet Alloys, will provide effective screening method to identify magnets that are subject to excessive corrosion in high-humidity environments. Specific areas of potential use include applications requiring high performance where clearances are tight, and areas where aggressive environments with high humidity and temperature cycling are common.

October 10, 2011 Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) purchased 108,000 ft˛ of office and lab space on 24 acres adjacent to its research facility at University Research Park in Charlotte, NC. Purchased from Paragon Media LLC, EPRI plans to expand its laboratory space by 15,000 ft˛ as well as provide space for local workforce growth over next 5 years. In addition to laboratories, new acquisition will provide conference and meeting space to support collaborative research and development programs.

October 10, 2011 August findings from IPC's North American PCB Statistical Program regarding combined rigid PCBs and flexible circuits show shipments and booked orders down 4.4% and 8.0%, respectively, from August 2010. Year to date, shipments were up 1.5% and bookings were down 8.5%. Compared to previous month, combined industry shipments and bookings, respectively, increased 13.7% and 14.3%. Combined, rigid and flex, industry book-to-bill ratio remained above parity at 1.02.
Proposed Standard offers guidance on live-line tools.

October 10, 2011 A proposed new standard being developed by ASTM International Committee F18 on Electrical Protective Equipment for Workers will provide guidance to assist in the required testing of live-line tools. ASTM WK33590, Guide for In-Service Inspection, Maintenance and Electrical Testing of Insulating Tools will also contain failure requirements for testing live-line tools, which is key to any testing process. Primary users of proposed standard will be utility and electrical testing companies.

In all, there are 63 standards from ASTM Committees D22 on Air Quality; E06 on Performance of Buildings; E30 on Forensic Sciences; E35 on Pesticides, Antimicrobials, and Alternative Control Agents; and E47 on Biological Effects and Environmental Fate that collectively provide foundation for interpreting measurements.

October 7, 2011 Auto-industry labor agreement stipulating increased laser-safety training for employees underscored timeliness of LIA's safety program at inaugural Lasers for Manufacturing Event (LME). LIA Education Director Gus Anibarro taught 100+ LME attendees about hazards of certain lasers and proper methods for avoiding worker injuries. Such training is becoming increasingly important as major industries are increasingly incorporating lasers in manufacturing applications.

October 7, 2011 SAE International and American Welding Society have agreed to partnership that will enable SAE to sell both print and electronic versions of selected AWS books in their entirety and as individual chapters. Agreement is part of SAE International's Content Partnership Program, which seeks to expand its publishing program by partnering with book publishers, industry experts, multimedia producers, and variety of other technical knowledge providers.
