NIST Detectors enhance Hawaiian telescope's sensitivity.
National Institute of Standards & Technology    Gaithersburg, MD 20899-1070
December 13, 2011 Submillimeter, 4.5 ton SCUBA-2 camera, mounted on James Clerk Maxwell Telescope on Mauna Kea in Hawaii, is based on NIST superconducting technology. Inclusion of 10,000+ NIST superconducting sensors promotes optimized sensitivity and accelerated sky mapping with extended field of view for astronomers. Specifically, camera is sensitive to objects associated with very cold gas and dust clouds which absorb visible light but emit submillimeter radiation between microwave and IR bands.
NIST Enables Analysis of ultrafine indoor air contaminants.
National Institute of Standards & Technology    Gaithersburg, MD 20899-1070
December 13, 2011 NIST researchers spent 75 days in 1,500 ft² test house tracking and analyzing release, distribution, and fate of particles from 2.5-100 nm emitted by gas and electric stoves, hair dryers, power tools, and candles. Collected data was used to develop model for predicting changes in size and distribution of ultrafine particles discharged by tools, appliances, and other sources. Monitoring particles of such size was made possible by NIST advances in measurement capabilities.
