January 6, 2012 ZigBee Light Link(TM) will help manufacturers develop interoperable wirelessly controlled lighting products for the home. Light bulbs, LED fixtures, sensors, timers, remotes, and switches built using ZigBee Light Link will not require special devices to coordinate in home's network. Like all devices in ZigBee portfolio, ZigBee Light Link devices can be controlled over Internet via computer, tablet, and smart phone.

January 6, 2012 Toxics Release Inventory program publishes information on toxic chemical disposals and other releases into air, land, and water, as well as information on waste management and pollution prevention activities in neighborhoods across the country. According to 2010 TRI data, 3.93 billion pounds of toxic chemicals were released into environment nationwide, a 16% increase from 2009. Total air releases decreased 6% since 2009, continuing trend seen over past several years.
Nonresidential Construction Spending increased in November.

January 5, 2012 According to January 3 report by U.S. Commerce Department, total nonresidential construction spending increased 0.9% in November to seasonally adjusted annual rate of $555.7 billion. However, total nonresidential spending is down 0.1% from one year ago. Private nonresidential construction spending was unchanged for the month, but is 4.5%higher than November 2010. Public nonresidential construction jumped 1.8% in November, but is still down 4.4% year-over-year.

January 5, 2012 As part of National Radon Action Month, EPA is encouraging Americans to take steps to test their homes for harmful levels of radon gas. Approximately 21,000 people die from radon related lung cancer each year in U.S., yet elevated levels of this health hazard can be prevented. EPA and U.S. Surgeon General recommend that all homes, both with and without basements, be tested for radon through DIY test kits or by hiring qualified tester. Action should be taken if radon levels are above 4 pCi/L.
ANSI and IREC announce pilot accreditation program.

January 5, 2012 ANSI and Interstate Renewable Energy Council invite certificate-awarding entities that develop and administer energy efficiency and renewable energy programs to apply for participation in pilot accreditation program. Successful participants will be awarded accreditation under program designed to provide quality assurance. Certificate programs will be evaluated against draft IREC Standard 14732: 2012, General Requirements for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Certificate Programs.

FCC Seeks Public Comments on wireless hearing aid compatibility.

January 2, 2012 To ensure that hearing aid compatibility rules reflect technological advances and cover large number of wireless handsets, Wireless Telecommunications Bureau and Office of Engineering and Technology are proposing to adopt IEEE/ANSI STD C63.19-2011, American National Standard Methods of Measurement of Compatibility between Wireless Communications Devices and Hearing Aids. Comments are sought on tentative conclusions and whether adoption would impose new or additional costs on handset manufacturers.

Bringing together industry, academia, and federal government, AMP aims to drive investments in emerging technologies capable of creating manufacturing jobs and enhancing global competitiveness. Office will be led by Mike Molnar, currently Chief Manufacturing Officer at NIST.

December 30, 2011 Electroindustry Business Confidence Index for current North American conditions measured 52 in December-with more respondents reporting conditions improved relative to previous month than reporting they declined-for third consecutive month. Confidence in future conditions climbed to 7 month high as December's EBCI for future North American conditions jumped 10 points to 70, affirming that expectations for business environment in next 6 months remains positive.

December 30, 2011 For rigid PCBs and flexible circuits combined, November 2011 findings from IPC North American Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Statistical Program show industry shipments decrease of 6.2% from November 2010 and orders booked decrease of 5.6%. Combined industry shipments, year to date, are down 1.6% and bookings are down 8.5%. Compared to previous month, industry shipments and bookings increased, respectively, 8.6% and 3.8%. Combined rigid and flex industry book-to-bill ratio declined to 0.97.

To protect against hazards associated with manure storage, American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) published ANSI/ASAE EP470.1 OCT2011, Manure Storage Safety. Both are American National Standards which play vital roles in daily lives.
